đź“„ CHAPTER 15
They sat together on the fallen logs that lined the clearing, the afternoon sun beginning to dip lower in the sky, painting the treetops in shades of orange and red. For a long while, Liana asked questions, and each of them answered as honestly as they could — explaining the history of the Guardians, the rules they must follow, and the dangers that came with their duty.
“The Veil is not just a wall,” Elias told her. “It is a living balance. If it grows too strong, magic will fade entirely, and the world will lose something precious. If it grows too weak, dark and chaotic forces will cross over, and the ordinary world will be thrown into danger. Our job is to keep it steady.”
“And lately?” Liana asked, thinking of the shadows and the strange feeling in the air. “It’s getting weaker, isn’t it?”
Elias’s expression grew serious, and the others fell quiet. “Yes,” he said softly. “For reasons we do not yet fully understand, the barrier has been thinning faster than ever before. More things are slipping through — harmless shadows, but also things that are not so gentle. That is why we must be more careful than ever.”
Serena looked at Liana steadily. “This is not something you have to join,” she said. “You can choose to walk away, close your eyes to what you see, and live as you did before. We will not blame you.”
Liana thought about it for a moment, remembering the fear she had felt in the mist, but also the calm strength she had seen in all of them. She looked at Elias, then at Jaxson, Serena, and Milo — people who carried a heavy burden but chose to stand together to protect others.
“I don’t want to walk away,” she said clearly. “If I can help, even just by seeing what others miss, then I want to be part of it.”
Elias looked at her, and this time, his smile held a true warmth that had not been there before. “Then welcome,” he said softly. “But remember — this is only the beginning. There is still much more to learn.”
