Chapter 2

2584 Words
Feeling the soft breeze coming through my open window, I slowly open my eyes. Surprisingly, I did manage to fall asleep last night. Jakey isn’t beside me anymore, probably already downstairs since he’s quite the early bird. I still feel tense about yesterdays events but I’m not going to let this ruin my weekend. It’s most likely  just something with dads business that got them all worked up. Either way, there isn’t much I can do to help that situation so let’s just enjoy the weekend since they predicted pretty nice weather. I groggily rub my eyes and start to get ready since I noticed it’s already 11am.   30 minutes later I calmly make my way downstairs, wearing a hoody and some leggings. Untangling my still slightly wet hair with my fingers, I step in the kitchen and see mom and Jake. As mom notices me and looks up I can’t help but notice the huge bags under her eyes.   “Hey Victoria, me and Jake are going to the store. Do you need anything?”, she says smiling brightly but it’s obvious how tired she is. Even her posture is still very tense.   “No, I don’t need anything. Are you and dad okay tho?”, I ask still a bit worried from yesterday.   “Everything is okay, sweetie. Nothing you two should worry about”, she responds as she takes both Jake and me in a big reassuring hug. It doesn’t take long before the three of us are all genuinely laughing.   Feeling a little better, I take an apple from the counter and take a big bite from it.   “What about a movie night later tonight? Then your father could maybe relax a little as well”, mom asks looking at me and Jake.   “Yesss”, Jake yells excitingly, jumping up from his chair.   “Can I choose the movie, Tori?” he adds as he gives me big puppy eyes.   Even though he can be pretty annoying at times, Jake and I do have a pretty good bond. At times I feel like he’s the person that knows me the best. Even knows exactly what to do or say to get what he wants from me. Smart little brat…   “Ughh, sure… But just no horror please”   “Yesss, thanks Tori”, he says giving me his big innocent smile and runs of to get ready for the store. Little devil…   Rolling my eyes, I turn to mom who’s getting ready to leave as well.   “Hey mom, where’s dad?” I ask, munching on my apple.   “He’s making some really important calls in his office so try not to disturb him, okay?” she replies to which I just nod.   As she walks out the kitchen, she suddenly turns to me and engulfs me in a big hug.   “We’ll be right back, okay?” she whispers as she’s basically hugging the air out of me.   “Great, mom”, I manage to get out and she lets go of me before hesitantly walking out the kitchen.   Hearing the front door close, I turn back to the kitchen. Maybe I should eat some more for breakfast than just an apple. Yeah, cereal it is. But of course as I search in the fridge, the milk has to be missing. Nice, dry cereal…   Shoving the dry cereal in my mouth, I feel my phone vibrate. It’s my other best friend Maryn asking if I want to join her and Lisa for lunch.   ‘Thank god’, I think as I shove away the bowl of dry cereal.   Maryn is honestly such a sweet friend. Couldn’t even hurt a fly. She moved here a year ago from Europe and she immediately clicked with me and Lisa. With the three of us, there is never one who feels left out. It’s like we are a perfect puzzle. Lisa is more of the bitchy one, but only if she has to be. She will always come up for everyone. Especially Maryn since she’s pretty shy but she’s so nice that I can’t imagine anyone not liking her. Then there’s me. I basically get us in trouble. Nothing big though but I always come up with the crazy and impulsive ideas, but most of the time we do end up having tons of fun. So yeah, most people call me the fun but crazy one.     -Great, I’ll meet you guys there -  I reply.   I stand up and make my way to the office to tell dad I’ll be gone for a little bit but as I’m standing a few meters from his office I hear him yell.   “YOU’RE ON YOUR WAY HERE?”   I hear no response so I’m pretty sure he’s talking to someone on the phone.   “I DON’T CARE IF I’M NOT SHOWING ANY RESPECT. YOUR KIND HAS BROUGHT MY FAMILY ENOUGH MISERY”   ‘Your kind’ What now, dad’s working with aliens? What on earth is going on…   “I HAVE EVERY RIGHT”   “YOU CAN’T JUST DO EVERYTHING YOU WANT, YOU KNOW THAT RIGHT”   “I DON’T CARE”   And so the yelling keeps going so I guess I’ll just leave note.     Mom/Dad, I’m out to have lunch with Maryn and Lisa. I’ll be back before dinner. Xxx Tori   After finishing the note, I put it on the counter and leave for lunch. “You know it’s actually quite weird when you think about it”, Lisa states looking at me.   We finished our food a long time ago but the three of us have basically been talking and laughing for hours. It was one of our things and if we didn’t actually have other obligations in life, I’m pretty sure the three of us could straight on talk till we died of old age.   “What is?” I ask Lisa.   “Well the fact that we’re all in the same class yet you are almost two year older than the both of us”, she states pointing between Maryn and her.   “Not my fault you two babies were born in December” I tell her, sipping my drink.   “Oh, shut up you old woman”, Lisa says grinning at me. I just laugh at her.   “I’m just glad that besides our age difference, we’re still best friends”, Maryn adds as she gives the both of us a fond smile.   “True that, sister”, Lisa answers and pats Maryn on the shoulder.   “Hey Tori, my phone is dead. Can I use yours for a sec? I wanna ask if mom can pick me up since it’s already close to 6”, Lisa asks as she turns to me.   I just nod and take my phone out of the pocket of my jacket, quickly handing it to her.   “Thanks, honey”, she winks at me and walks of to call her mom.   I just shake my head at her and turn back to Maryn who’s having the same reaction.   “She’s shameless”, she says as she looks back at where Lisa went.   “That she is… But hey, how is everything with school?” I ask since I know the change in school from Europe to here wasn’t the easiest for her. She always tells us it isn’t the fact that everything is in different language but just that the way of teaching is much different here.   “It’s much better, and… Benjamin has been a great help lately”, she answers as I slight blush starts to appear on her face.   I’m pretty sure she’s crushing on Benjamin and I honestly couldn’t think of a better match. Only problem is that Maryns shyness seems to be at an ultimate peak whenever I try something between her and Benjamin. So I’ve not been so successful on the matching so far…   “I’ve been meaning to ask you but do you maybe li-“ I started but got interrupted by Lisa calling me as she hastily made her way back to our table.   “I think you should call your mom, Tori. You’ve got no joke 11 missed calls from her”, she says as she hands me my phone.   I quickly step a few meters away from our table and press the call button. It didn’t even take two rings as I immediately heard my moms voice come through.   “VICTORIA, WHERE ARE YOU?”, she half yells through the phone. But why would she be mad that I wasn’t home yet. I left a note and I practically come here till late almost every weekend…   “Mom, calm down. I’m still with Lisa and Maryn”, I answer her.   “Okay, but please come home immediately sweetie”, she says, calming down a little bit.   “Sure mom, I’m on my way”, I say slightly worried that something is wrong again. Sure my parents are overprotective but normally they wouldn’t call me home like that.   Saying goodbye to Maryn and Lisa I start my walk home since I don’t want to cause mom and dad anymore unnecessary stress.     The eerie feeling started as soon as I walked up to our house. There were two expensive looking cars parked on our driveway that I’ve never seen before. As I walk in the house I see mom quietly sitting in the living room with three intimidating and buff men and a girl.   What. The actual f**k. Is going on. Who are these people?   Mom noticed me immediately and runs over to me, hugging me strongly.   “Thank god” I hear her mumble as I furrow my eyebrows in confusion. Looking behind her, I see the four guests all looking at me but instead of giving me the scary look I expected, they all gave me a pitiful smile.   Why pity? WHAT’S GOING ON???   “Mom, what is this”   She doesn’t answer. Just looks at me with teary eyes.   “MOM?”   Still nothing. Allright, slightly panicking now…   “MOM, TELL ME FOR GOD SAKE”, I yell being completely done with being in the oblivious.   She closes her eyes, making the tears roll down her cheeks.   “We just need you to be safe, Victoria. You don’t know how special you are”, she almost whispers as she strokes my cheeks, which are full of tears by now as well.   “What’s that even supposed to me-“ I stop as I a loud crash echo’s through the house followed by loud yelling coming from dads office a few meters behind me.     “IV’E BEEN PATIENT THE PAST YEAR. A WHOLE f*****g YEAR, SULLIVAN. THEY FOUND OUT AND IT’S NOT GOING TO TAKE LONG BEFORE THEY FIND OUT WHERE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE”   I look at mom, sobbing as she takes me in her arms not taking her eyes of the office doors .   “SHE’S NOT SAVE HERE AND I WON’T LET ANY HARM COME TO HER. EVEN IF THAT MEANS I HAVE TO DRAG HER AWAY FROM HERE”   I feel moms hold on my tighten.   “YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TAKE HER AWAY FROM US” I finally hear my dad. “I HAVE EVERY RIGHT. SHE’S MINE”   Moms eyes suddenly snap back to me as the yelling continuous.   “Honey, I need you to go upstairs and pack the most important things. Can you do that?”   My eyes just widen. They are talking about me. Someone is taking me away from my family.   Just as my mother was about to talk the girl that was in the living room stepped up.   “I’ll help her”, she says as she puts her hand on my shoulder and gives me a reassuring smile.   Mom gives me a sad smile and makes her way in the office.   “You’ll be safe, Victoria. Trust me”, the girl said as she softly started pulling me upstairs.     The following hour went by in a haze and by now it was dark outside. The girl had packed most of my stuff in bags since I wasn’t really responding. I was just so confused but something deep inside me told me not to be scared. I just felt completely numb, like my mind nor my body knew how to respond to the situation. A little after the girl was done and left the room did mom and Jake came in. They have been trying to talk to me and I hear the desperation and sadness in moms voice but it’s like my brain doesn’t process their words.   It’s only when I see dad walk into the room that I seem to snap back to reality, only to see his depressed expression. “Victoria, I need you to listen to me”, he starts as he crouches down in front of me.   “I know this is all really confusing and strange but for your safety, we’ve decided that you’re going to stay with Alexander for a while”   “WHAT, WHY”, I yell, looking at him with tears filling my eyes again.   “I don’t have the time to explain you everything. He will tell you everything in time. I just need you to know that you’re safe with him”, dad says as tears escape his eyes as well.   “But-“   “There is no other way sweetie, I need you to trust me”, he finishes as he extends his hand to me.   I slowly nod and take his hand. Even though I’m not okay with this at all, I trust my parents more than anything. Enough to trust them on this.   Dad slowly starts leading me downstairs with mom and Jake following us and he stops right in front of his office.   “You’re going to be okay, you’re strong”, he whispers and wipes my tears from my cheeks.   Releasing a deep sigh he opens the door of his office and slightly pushes me inside, closing the door after. As I look up, I’m met with a pair of radiant green eyes.   “Hello Victoria”
