It is just after 5 am when I hear someone banging on my door. For a secure floor, people have an easy time getting access to it. I pull myself out of bed and tell whoever is at the door just a minute. I am exhausted. I barely slept all night and keep hearing Beth scream in my dreams. I am not a prophetic dreamer, so I am certain it’s my stress and guilt giving me the nightmares.
I wrap my housecoat around my PJ and walk out to the door. I look out the peep hole and I see that its Beth’s ex-something, Brain. He looks dishevel and as exhausted as I am. I open the door and he storm inside the room.
“Where is she?” He demands.
“I wish I knew.”
He paces the floor and goes into her bedroom and comes out looking around the room. “What is missing from her room?”
“Nothing, as far as I can tell. What are you doing here?”
He runs his hand throw his hair and looks around the room again. “Her parents were contacted yesterday about her disappearance. I was sent to come here and find her.”
I turn and grab Officer Rider card off my desk. It is the one he left here the other day. “This is who oversees looking for her. You need to go talk to him.” I am not worried about him taking the card. I took a picture of it the other night and sent it to my brother.
He takes the card and studies it before flinging it back at me, “That is not necessary.” He turns to leave the room.
“Wait, I know you are not human. What are you and Beth?”
He turns to me, and I see his eyes flash red before they settle. His fists are clamped down at his side and he looks like he is about to beat me. I step back and take a fighter pose myself and dare his to come at me. He c***s his head to the side and then sniffs the air. He whispers something under his breath, and I fill the air vibrate around me. “You are not human either. Shifter?”
“Wolf shifter, actually. And you?”
“Not important. How do you know about Ms. George?”
“I can tell.”
“Shifters do not have that ability, especially if we are masked.”
“I do.”
He studies me closely and loosens up his hands. “You are more than a shifter, not an alpha.” He continues whispering and then stops and his eyes open widely. “A guardian?” I haven’t seen your kind in a long time.”
“A what? What are you talking about?”
He laughs, “I will talk to you soon guardian.” With that he turns and leaves.
I am stunned silent. I need to ask someone about this and the only person I can think of is my mom. I know it is crazy early at home, but I need answers. So, I pick up my phone and dial the house. It only rings twice before I hear my mother’s voice.
“I was wondering when you were going to call?” She asks. Wise Women do not have the ability to tell the future, but my mother always has had this 6th sense to tell when people were going to call or come over.
“Sorry mom, I should have called last night.”
“Yes, you should have. It has taken all my abilities to not let your father jump on the first plane south to go get you.”
“Thank You, mom. I take it Tulugaak has already called you and let you know what has happen?”
“Of course, he has. Nanurjuk, are you alright?”
“I am mom. You and dad have nothing to worry about.”
She huffs a laugh, “Your father thinks they are after you because you are the next Angkkuq. I told him it was doubtful since we discussed not telling anyone what you are destine to be and you being the daughter of an alpha should mask your aura enough that it is not suspicions.”
“I have not told anyone, I swear. But mom, one of Beth’s family friends showed up at my door this morning and he called me a guardian.”
I hear my mother hiss out a breath, so I know whatever it is, it is bad.
“What does that mean, mom?” I ask her.
“You already know all wolf shifter packs have an Angkkuq, but many of the pack in the world have killed off the bloodline or the women have gone into hiding.”
“I know, you have told me all this.”
“Well, all shifters’ groups have these bloodlines. They all have different names. Guardian is one of them. How did he know?”
“Am not sure, he whispered some worlds and then there was this odd electricity in the air and then he just knew.”
“What else did he say?”
“Um, I asked what type of supernatural Beth was and he asked if Beth told me, and I said no. I told I could just tell. He said that was impossible because they are masked and then he did his thing and called me a guardian.”
“Nanurjuk! That was very dangerous. Why did you confront him? He could be the one that is responsible for your roommate. And how did he get in your dorm? I thought those places were secure.”
“I do not know mom; it seems like anyone can come up whenever they feel like it.”
She hums into the phone, “I am not going to tell your father about this. If I do, I do not think even my gifts will keep him from heading down there.”
We keep silent and then something strikes me. “Mom, you told me being the daughter of an alpha should mask my aura. What does that mean?”
“Angkkuq have powerful auras. It is usually the way they are found out and hunted. You must understand that our pack respects the old ways and would never harm us. They would die to protect us, but other packs fear us and would want to control or kill us. But your father is an alpha and alphas have powerful auras as well. It is why they can dominate and control their packs. Your father aura almost rivals mine. People who have never met your father will just think you have a powerful aura because of him. They would have to carefully inspect his aura next to yours to be able to tell the difference.”
“Beth’s friend said that she was masking her abilities. What if she is Angkkuq like me and she is hiding her bloodline?”
“It’s possible. Especially if her bloodline is an omega line. Her aura would give her away immediately to anyone who can see or sense them. If that is the case, then you need to be even more careful about hiding this from everyone. Not every pack respects the Angkkuq. We are lucky our packs love us, but other packs will destroy them, just to ensure that no one is more powerful than them. If she was taken because she is an Angkkuq, then you could be in danger too. I do not know, maybe you should come home.”
“Mom, I can’t keep hiding when things get hard. How will I function as the Angkkuq, when it is my time? I promise I will not tell anyone and if I sense I am in any danger I will be on the first flight home.”
She sighs, “Okay. Just you be careful and call me every night.”
“I will. I love you.”
“I love you too dear, be safe.”
With that she hangs up the phone. I get up and pull all my stuff together and get ready for my day. I can’t go back to sleep so I might as well get started. I package up the hair sample and nervously wait till 8 am when the post office opens. I pay an exorbitant price and overnight the sample to my brother. Then I get through the next four hours just by my will power. I finish the test and turn in my research assignment. I am so glad I got this done before Sunday. With that thought guilt washes over me. The professor notices my face and calls me into the hallway.
“I heard about your roommate. I think considering the circumstances you should take the rest of the day off.”
“I am fine.”
“I have no doubt, but your mind is not on this right now. I will email you any notes you need and give you a pass on today assignment.”
He is right I am exhausted, and I do not remember anything he has said for the last 30 minutes. With that I nod and head back to my room. Once there I walk through Beth’s space hoping to get a sense about where she is. Melissa right, nothing is missing. I sniff the room. I smell Melissa and Natalie and mainly just Beth. There are no other pronounced scents. Ugh, I have no idea what I am doing. I decide I will look it up. The internet is less than helpful. Make flyers, call their close family and friends, tell the police. Yeah, none of that is what I want to know. I want to know how I go and look for her.
I open a document file and start to list everything I know about Beth. I realize as I am typing I do not know anything serious about her.
· Her family has money.
· They want her to come home now.
· Brian (whoever he is) can sense people.
· She is NOT HUMAN
· No boyfriend that I know
· She hangs out with Melissa and Natalie. I don’t know their last name.
· She is from LA.
Yep, I really know nothing. I open the picture of the timeline I have, and I consider following it to see if I can notice anything. I wonder to my bed and drop to it. I will head out after I take a quick nap. The bar and club will not be open till after 5 pm anyway.
