Chapter 13

It is nearly midnight when my phone starts ringing. “Hel-lo” I mumble into the phone. “Where are you?” It is Brad sounding angry. “My room, why?”  “Why haven’t you called me back?” “Um, I’ve been busy.” “Busy! Doing what? Are you cheating on me?” “Brad I am not cheating. What the hell are you talking about?” “You were out with another man tonight.” “You mean Jordon? He is my brother best friend. Since Beth disappeared, my brother sent him here to keep me out of trouble.” I take a deep breath. “Were you spying on me?” “I have a right. You belong to me.” “First of all, I do not belong to anyone, and I am allowed to go out with whoever I choose. Second, I do not have to answer to you.” “Ana, you have this all wrong.” “No, I am pretty sure I hear you correctly. Goodnight, Brad.” I hang up the phone. There is a soft tap on my door.  “What?!” I yelled. “You, okay?” Jordon asks as she cracks open the door. “Yes, I am fine. Sorry if I woke you.” “No problem. Boyfriend problems?” I huff out a deep breathe, “Something like that.” “Want to talk about it?” “No, not really.” “Alright, I am here if you need me.” “Night, Jordon.” He closes the door and I flop back on my bed. The next morning, I step out of the bathroom dressed and ready for the day. Jordon has folded up his sleeping bag and laid the air mattress on its side, so it is not sitting in the middle of the room.  “I need to get to my meeting with Officer Rider,” Jordon tells me. “Are you sure I can’t go?”  Jordon reached down to my backpack sitting next to my desk and he hands it to me. “Sorry kiddo, you have class today.” “Why does everyone think they can tell me what I do?” “Because we care.” I grab the backpack and turn to storm out of the door. I turn before I get to the door, “You will tell me what you learn.” He chuckles, “I will, promise.” I am barely able to concentrate on my classes and I keep glancing at the clock. Finally, my last class comes to an end. I scurry out of class and head back to my dorm. I see Jordon lounging on the benches in front of the building. He is leaned back and letting the sun hit his face. I feel guilty because I did not figure out a way for him to get back to my room. It never occurred to me that he would need a way back in. I walk up to him, “Hey.” I look around. “What are you doing?” “It is so warm here for being in the winter.” “Yes, according to people here there is only a week of real winter.” He nods. “It’s kind of nice.” “Except when it rains, and it does that a lot.” He stands and stretches.  “You hungry?” “I could eat,” I tell him. I skipped lunch because I was lost in my mind. “Where do you want to go?” “How about I order us a pizza and we just stay in?” “That sounds good.” He waves his hand to front door, and I lead the way to my room. We walk into my room, and I drop my bag by my desk. Jordon walks to the coach and sets the folder in his hand on the table. I am staring at the folder and Jordon snaps his fingers in front of my face. “How about that pizza?” I shake my head, “Sure, what do you want on it?” “Whatever, I eat everything.” “Of course, you do.” I mumble. I order the pizza and go into my room to change into my sweat clothes. I step out and pull my hair up in a loose bun. Jordon stands from the coach and surveys me from head to toe. I feel heat go from every area his eyes touch. I kind of regret changing into my comfy clothes. They are not remotely sexy. “Ok, pizza will be here shortly. Want to tell me what you found out?” Jordon shakes his head and sits back down on the coach. I walk up and sit next to him. I see a few pieces of paper laid out on the table. “I talked to Officer Rider. Your university is interesting. The campus security is a police force. The campus is considered a small town and has its own police force. It makes sense since this place accommodates supernatural. Anyway, Officer Rider contacted the US Marshals for assistance.” “US Marshal? Why would he call them?” “The US Marshals have the same job as the Mounties. They assist with the Supernatural community, since like us they are the federal police force. I met with the deputy assigned this case. He is a vampire, I think. He told me that I can assist in the case, since I am accustomed to working with supernatural and since I am human, I would make it easier to talk to non-supernatural since Ms. George was masking as a human.” “Vampire? How can they be out during daylight?” Jordon laughs, “They are only sensitive to sunlight. They have no problem being out in the daytime. It is only a myth they like to encourage. It makes people more comfortable thinking they have a weakness.” “Okay, what have they found out so far?” “Not much. Ms. George’s parents descended this morning and screamed and yelled, demanding to know where their daughter is. I can’t blame them.” “Her parents are here? What type of supernatural are they?” “They wouldn’t say. They told Rider that it is not the reason for her abduction.” Jordon shakes his head. “The last time anyone saw Ms. George was at the dance club. She did order an Uber, but she wasn’t there when the driver got there.” “Why didn’t he call the police or something?!” “It’s not unusual for people to get a different ride and forget to cancel the car. He figured that was the case. He canceled the rider and picked up the next one. Rider checked his alibi, and it all checks out. He was proving rides until 3 am.” I huff out a breath, “So what do we do now?” “Nothing. I know that is not what you wanted to hear. They have already issued a missing person report, nationwide. Deputy Wayne has issued a supernatural one on the dark web. We just have to see if anyone can give us a tip or something.” “So, we just wait?” “Yes, we just wait.” We sit silently staring at the paperwork for a couple of minutes. I then get a call on my phone telling me the pizza is here. I got down get the pizza and head back to my room. I set it on the table, and we start to eat. I finish up the pizza slice I had and sit back on the coach.  “I need to get you a key card to access my room, since it seems you are going to be here a while.” “Don’t worry Officer Rider already gave me one.” “He did?” “Don’t get your panties in a wad. After he confirmed my identity, he went ahead and gave me one after talking to your brother, of course.” “Of course.” Jordon laughs and bumps me with his shoulder. “Do you need to study or something?” “I do, I just do not know if I can.” “Why don’t you try, I need to call your brother and see if he has any leads. Don’t worry, I’ll let you know if I find out anything.” I nod and head to my room, stopping to grab my bag.
