CHAPTER 4: THE HEART OF DECEPTION

As Eve stood in the center of the council chamber, which was filled with the solemn faces of the Alphas and the councilors, her eyes were scanning the room, trying to read the emotions and intentions behind their stern gazes. Alpha Kegan was the first to speak, his voice authoritative and unyielding. "Warrior E," he began, "after much deliberation, we have decided on how to deal with the Beast of Asylum." Eve nodded, her posture was straight and confident. "What is your plan?" Alpha Torin, standing next to Alpha Kegan, stepped forward. "We believe the only way to draw the Beast out and ensure its defeat is through a sacrifice." A murmur rippled through the room, and Eve's eyes narrowed slightly. "A sacrifice? What do you mean?"Eve felt a chill run down her spine. "And who do you propose as the sacrifice?" Alpha Begrid stepped forward, his voice gruff but steady. "You, Warrior E. You have the skills to survive the encounter and to lead the Beast into our trap." Eve's eyes widened in surprise. "You want me to be the sacrifice?" Alpha Begrid nodded. "Yes, but there's more. We will tie you up and make it appear that you are a helpless offering. However, we will ensure the bonds are loose enough for you to escape once the Beast is drawn out." Eve's mind raced as she processed their plan. "So, you want me to go in as bait, and then fight the Beast once it's drawn out?" Kegan stepped closer, his eyes boring into hers. "Yes. It's the only way to ensure the Beast comes out of hiding. We need to end this threat once and for all." Eve took a deep breath, weighing her options. She knew the risk was immense, but if it could save her people, she was willing to take it. "Very well. I will do it." “You also have to ensure that The Beast releases my daughter, the future queen,” Alpha Kegan implied. “That is if The Beast had not eaten her up,” Eve said. The Alphas and councilors exchanged relieved glances, and Kegan gave a small nod of approval. "Good. We will make the preparations immediately." Eve found Alpha Max in a secluded part of the chambers. She approached him, her expression serious. "Alpha Max, we need to talk," she said, her voice firm but gentle. Max looked up, his eyes weary but attentive. "What is it, Warrior E?" Eve took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she needed to ask. "Did you know about the Alphas' plan to use me as a sacrifice? Did you know they intended to tie me up and trick me into drawing out the Beast?" Max's eyes widened in surprise, and he shook his head vehemently. "No, I had no idea. I would never have agreed to such a plan if I had known. You have to believe me." Eve searched his face, looking for any sign of deceit, but all she saw was sincerity and concern. "So, you were as much in the dark as I was?" Max nodded, his expression earnest. "Yes. I only found out about the plan when it was too late to stop it. I was furious, but I didn't have time to confront the council before the Beast appeared. I’m sorry you had to go through that." Eve's shoulders relaxed slightly, relief washing over her. "I believe you, Alpha Max. I just needed to hear it from you." Max reached out, taking her hand in his. "Warrior E, I would never put you in harm's way like that." "Alpha Max," Eve began, breaking the comfortable silence, "there's something else we need to discuss." Max turned to her, concern flickering in his eyes. "What is it, Warrior E?" Eve took a deep breath, preparing to broach the delicate subject. "Earlier, Alpha Seth came to me, urging me to ensure Marie's safety. I could tell by the way he spoke and the look in his eyes that there was more to his concern than mere duty. I confronted him, and he admitted that he and Marie are in love." Max's eyes widened in disbelief. "That can't be true. Marie is betrothed to me. Our union was meant to solidify the alliance between our packs." Eve nodded, understanding his shock. "I know it's hard to believe, but Seth was sincere. He and Marie have been in love for some time, but they kept it a secret because they knew it would never be approved by her father." Max's expression shifted from disbelief to frustration. "Why didn't Marie tell me? Why did she go along with the betrothal if she loved someone else?" Eve placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "She probably felt trapped, Max. The expectations placed on her were immense, and she didn't want to disappoint anyone or cause conflict between the packs. But now that we know the truth, we need to address it." Max looked away, processing the revelation. After a few moments, he sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "You're right. We need to talk to Seth and Marie if she eventually gets out." "Max," Eve called, her voice soft but curious, "tell me what it was like to fall in love with Eve, the Omega werewolf." Max glanced at her, a small smile playing on his lips. "It's a story that's both beautiful and painful, Warrior E. Are you sure you want to hear it?" Eve nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation. "Yes, I want to know everything." Max took a deep breath, his gaze distant as he recalled the memories. "Eve was unlike anyone I'd ever met. She was strong, despite being an Omega, and had a spirit that couldn't be tamed. From the moment I saw her, I knew she was special." Eve's heart ached with a mixture of joy and sorrow as she listened. "What drew you to her?" Max smiled, his eyes reflecting the starlight. "It was her kindness, her bravery. She wasn't afraid to stand up for what she believed in, even if it meant going against the norms. She had a way of seeing the best in people, and she made me want to be a better person." Eve felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. "It sounds like she made quite an impact on you." Max nodded, his expression thoughtful. "She did. We spent so much time together, learning from each other. She showed me that strength isn't just about physical power; it's about resilience, compassion, and the courage to be vulnerable." He paused, his voice growing softer. "But our love was forbidden. As an Alpha, I was expected to marry within my rank, to strengthen alliances. Loving an Omega was seen as a weakness, a betrayal of my duties." Eve's heart ached for the past version of herself and Max. "How did you cope with that?" Max sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "It wasn't easy. We had to keep our love a secret, meeting in hidden places, and stealing moments whenever we could. Every time we were together, it felt like the world disappeared, and it was just the two of us. But there was always the fear of being discovered, of the consequences." Eve placed a hand on his arm, her touch gentle. "And when you were discovered?" Max's jaw tightened, his eyes clouding with pain. "It was one of the hardest days of my life. The elders found out, and they demanded that I end things with Eve to preserve my position. I thought by doing so, I could protect her and my pack." Eve's voice was barely a whisper. "But it broke both your hearts." Max nodded, his voice hoarse with emotion. "Yes. Letting her go was the hardest thing I've ever done. I thought I was doing the right thing, but it left a wound that never truly healed." Eve's tears flowed freely now, and she looked into Max's eyes, seeing the depth of his love and regret. "Max, you will find her someday, and I pray that both of you fall in love again." Max's eyes widened slightly, “thank you Warrior E,”
