I panicked, dropping my ice-cream on the other side of the bed. I hurriedly kicked off my duvet, as I swung my legs from the bed into the cold tiles.
The tiles felt surprisingly chilly. I didn't know if it was the ice-cream I had that betrayed me or the chilling panic that ran down my spine.
I ran towards the bathroom, my body feeling lighter than air against the floor.
I gripped the bathroom sink, my hands sweaty, my quick breaths created steams on the mirror. I wanted to be sure, but I was too scared to find out. What if it was real? I thought. What would I tell mom? I gripped the bathroom sink until my knuckles turned white.
I wiped the steam from the mirror with agonizing slowness. I was scared to check.... but I had to.
I finally opened my mouth, but my eyes were shut. I opened them slowly, and I regretted doing that, because what I saw made me realise my life was going to change forever and it wasn't going back to normal.
My canines had elongated. They were white and caught the light from the hole in the bathroom wall.
My index finger brushed against them. A sharp pain washed over me.
Blood.
A dark red bead of blood ran down my finger. My chest tightened. I tried to wash it off, but it kept flowing.
"Elena, are you okay?", I heard mom's footsteps from the kitchen. The shuffling of feet was louder than normal. It was getting closer and closer.
I ran towards the toilet paper. I cut a little from it. I was so disorganised. I wrapped it around my hand with inhuman speed.
"Elena, are you there?", mom knocked gently, but it felt like gunshots and sounds of thunder, sounding in my ears simultaneously. "Coming, mom".
I smoothed out my dress, arranging my disheveled hair with incredible speed.
I opened the door ajar. I didn't talk, I didn't open my mouth. I was fiddling with my t-shirt.
I did some gestures. I rubbed my belly and placed the back of my palm on my forehead. My gestures screamed, Mom I'm having period cramps.
I stared at her through my half lidded eyes. I was trying to see her reaction.
"Okay, baby. I understand. Don't forget your heating pads". She shut the door behind her. Her footsteps became faint as she went down the hallway.
I ran back into the bathroom. I took two deep breaths, as I walked slowly towards the mirror. I opened my mouth again, but something unexpected happened.
"They are GONE!"
I screamed internally. I gripped the bathroom sink so tight, I was sure it was gonna break any minute.
My teeth were back to normal. It was like any other human's teeth. Canines at normal length, teeth not sharp enough to tear flesh. Just normal.
I need to find a clue to what was happening to me. I rampaged through my room, looking for anything that could tell me what was going on.
Then it dawned on me.
THE BLANKET.
The cute baby blanket was the only thing I had from that night. When I woke up this morning, it was beside me, laying like it belonged in my space. I had thrown it into my huge pile of dirty laundry.
Hey, don't blame me, your girl here is lazy sometimes.
Anyways, my feets carried me hurriedly toward my laundry. There it was on the huge pile of clothes yet to be cleaned. For the first time in my life, a piece of dirty laundry felt like the most important thing to me.
As I walked into the laundry room, the smell of sweat and detergent hit my nostrils. My clothes were littered everywhere there. I looked like a clothing store. But instead of clean, crisped clothes, it reeked of dirty laundry.
I grabbed the blanket with a frantic speed. I turned it upside down, I opened every hidden area in the blanket. I was searching like a mad man.
As I was about to breakdown, a tiny piece of paper fell from the blanket.
It was a note from Damon and Lucian. Damon was the writer of the letter, while Lucian was the messenger. Damon's hand writing was a sharp , elegant, old fashioned cursive. The note read:
Keep your mouth shut around the humans, little bird. The Hunters are already. We will be seeing you soon."
What was this?
Hunters?
Fangs?
Insane speed?
Incredibly sense of smell?
Am I a monster...
I stared at myself in the mirror, I looked down at the cut on my index finger, wrapped in tissue paper.
This isn't normal. I wasn't normal.
What am l?
