The sun shone through the curtains. I could feel the softness of a mattress, the smell of freshly washed bedsheets and that particular scent of my bedroom.
Wait, wasn't I in the woods. How did I reach here, I thought. A sudden flashback of memories hit me. The rustling of leaves, the footsteps, the blood stained leaves, the lightning fast creature, and most especially the bite...
Wait... The bite. I checked my neck.
GONE!!!
It was gone. That's not possible. Was it a dream, I thought.
It couldn't be. It wasn't a dream. I could swear on my life. But if it wasn't a dream, what was it?
"What is wrong with her, doctor".
That's mom. They were in the living room, how can I hear that far. Probably those ear drops mom got me are working well —maybe too well.
I swung my legs from where it rested on the bed to the cold hard tiles of my room floor. I walked gently toward the door, my body feeling lighter than usual. I rested one of my ears against the hard oak doors of my room. I could hear everything.
"Is my baby gonna be okay?", I could hear the fear in mom's voice. It has been a long time since I had the shiver in her voice.
"Surprisingly, she's fine", that was probably Dr. Ash. He had always been our family doctor for ages, even before I could walk or even say letter A.
"There are no internal or external injuries, but there seems to be irregular activities occurring in her body which I cannot pinpoint", I could picture him adjusting his glasses across the bridge of his nose with a serious look.
"Irregular activities?... What are you saying doctor? Will my daughter be okay?", mom's voice was shaking. I could picture her fiddling with her blouse and clenching her fist like it was the only thing keeping her grounded.
"She's fine. She's even more healthier than normal. Just make sure she gets proper sleep and nutrition. If that's all I'll get going". The front door clicked shut.
Irregular activities... Healthier than normal, the doctor was talking in riddles...I wasn't understanding at all.
Anyways, I wasn't dead.
In the woods, after my body had gone limp onto the sea of dry fallen leaves, The creature wiped its mouth.
"Sorry about that. Couldn't help it", the creature spoke.
It was a tall guy. He looked like a greek god carved out of a sculpture. He was 6'5, voice deep and enchanting.
Hunters were approaching, flash lights shone in different angles of the woods. Lucian, the gorgeous creature — to be specific, the gorgeous vampire, carried my unconscious body and bolted away from the scene of the crime.
"Hey, Damon. I have one". Lucian dropped my body onto the hard brick wall of the alleyway.
"Not again, Lucian. I've told you to check for hunters first before you attack, but you never listen." Damon was an ancient vampire. The only ancient remaining after the great war between humans and vampires a thousand years ago.
He was 6'9, with a strong athletic build. He wore a charcoal suit, entirely not appropriate for walking in the woods at night. But in him, it looked very much normal. He was the strongest vampire. Other descendant vampires, only had a drop of ancient blood but they were strong, but not compared to a full ancient like Damon.
"Sorry, I got too carried away", Lucian said, rubbing the back of his neck, with a nervous, cocky grin plastered on his face.
"Whatever, as long as the Hunters didn't see you. Hurry leave her where the police would see her. There", he pointed towards it entrance of the alleyway. That was the police usual checkpoint.
Lucian left her there, wrapping a blanket around her. He saw it in the alleyway, it probably dropped from a baby carrier. "Sweet dreams, pretty girl".
There footsteps receded, fading into the night.
An hour later, flashlights shone around the entrance of the alleyway. It was the police.
"Code red, we have an unconscious civilian here. I repeat code red." a police officer announced using the walkie-talkie.
The air in the police station felt stale. It was a mixture of corruption and justice. People filed complaints, criminals were apprehended, and missing person reports were sent.
In less than thirty minutes, my mom stormed in eyes scanning the waiting room. She saw me on the police bench, unconscious and vulnerable. Hot tears streamed down her cheeks, lashes fluttering rapidly as she tried to hold it in.
"Elena, my baby", she ran toward me hugging my unconscious body. She weeped into the blanket still hung around me. The bite mark had healed already.
"Are you here guardian?", a police officer with a stern face asked.
"Y- yes", mom couldn't stop crying.
The officer briefed her about where they had seen me and how the called her.
After signing the documents, mom had carried me home. The drive home was quiet, filled with the unspoken apologies and regrets she felt.
She had called the doctor, I had gotten treatment and I was left to rest.
PRESENT DAY
I was curled up in my bed, with a bowl of ice-cream in between my laps. I took a heavy spoonful, eating it in one bit. It was so good and refreshing— until it wasn't.
I felt a sharp pain in my tooth. I was probably the frost from the ice-cream messing with my enamel.
I was about to take another spoon, when the pain became unbearable. I curled into my bedsheets, gripping my duvet tightly.
I placed a finger over my gums. I felt growth of new teeth. New set of teeth. That's not possible, I'm a young adult, I stopped teething ages ago, I thought.
The growth increased rapidly. Within three minutes, I felt a protrusion in my gums. My canines were longer and sharper.
"Wait!", I yelled internally, clutching my duvet with inhuman strength. "Are these FANGS!!!"
