The heavy oak doors of the central lecture hall creaked open, revealing a room that looked more like an ancient library than a university classroom. Tiered stone pews curved around a massive mahogany desk, and floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the room with dim, muted sunlight.
Chloe, Marcus, and I walked in together, sliding into a middle row.
"Try not to stare," Chloe whispered, nudging my arm with a grin. "Half the girls in the academy take this class just to look at him, but he never gives anyone a second glance."
I didn't need to ask who she meant.
Damon was standing at the front of the room, adjusting a silver pocket watch. He wore a crisp dark suit, looking impossibly sharp, refined, and completely out of reach. The cold, strict teacher mask was fully in place, far removed from the man who had kissed me in my bedroom just last night.
As the final bell rang, the murmurs in the room died down instantly. The silence was absolute.
"Welcome to Advanced Blood History," Damon began, his deep, velvet voice echoing off the high stone walls without effort. He didn't use notes or a microphone; his presence alone commanded every eye in the room. "In this hall, we do not study simple legends. We study the pure lineages that keep our kind alive, and the ancient magic that binds us."
He began pacing slowly across the front platform, his dark eyes sweeping over the rows of students.
I wonder if he can still hear me, I thought, my mind trailing back to the sensation in the Grand Hall yesterday. I focused my eyes on his back, keeping my lips tightly sealed. Damon? Can you hear this?
At the front of the room, Damon's footsteps hesitated for a fraction of a second. He didn't turn around, but the ghost of a subtle, faint smirk touched the corner of his lips.
I hear every single word, Elena, his voice echoed softly in my mind, deep and crystal clear, making my heart skip a beat. Pay attention to the lesson.
My cheeks flushed warm, and I quickly looked down at my blank notebook, biting my lower lip.
Stop reading my thoughts! I snapped back mentally, feeling embarrassed.
You're broadcasting them directly to my chest, little bird, Damon replied in my mind, his mental tone laced with smooth amusement. If you don't want me to listen, you'll have to learn to build a wall around your mind.
"To understand blood magic," Damon continued aloud to the class, turning back toward the students with a calm, stoic face, "you must understand the concept of the Primordial Bond. When an ancient bloodline is shared, it creates an unbreakable bridge between two souls."
He walked over to the chalkboard, picking up a piece of white chalk.
"It allows for shared strength, heightened instincts..." Damon paused, his dark brown eyes drifting directly to mine across the crowded room, holding my gaze with intense focus, "...and an undeniable awareness of the other's emotions."
The whole room was listening intently, taking notes, completely unaware that he was speaking directly to me.
Is that why you can hear me? I thought, my chest rising and falling as I met his eyes. Because of the kiss? Because of your blood?
Because you are mine now, Elena, Damon answered in my mind, his voice solemn and fierce beneath his calm demeanor. And no distance or locked door will ever break that link.
Before I could process the sudden rush of heat through my veins, a loud, sharp knock rattled the classroom door.
Lucian stepped into the lecture hall, his usual playful expression replaced by a tight, serious line. He looked directly at Damon and gave a subtle nod toward the hallway.
"Class dismissed ten minutes early," Damon announced smoothly, setting the chalk down. "Review chapter four on blood lineage for tomorrow."
The room erupted into the sounds of shuffling papers and moving chairs. Chloe stood up, stretching her arms. "Well, that was intense. Lord Damon is as intimidating as always."
"Yeah..." I murmured, gathering my notebook while watching Damon walk over to Lucian at the door.
Through our mental bond, a sudden spike of cold tension rippled from Damon's mind into mine. I paused, glancing toward the doorway.
What is it? I thought toward him, testing the link.
Damon didn't look back at me, but his answer echoed back, short and serious: Hunters were spotted near the outer eastern boundary. Stay with Chloe and Marcus in the main hall until I return.
