Chapter 1 Lucy point of view Against my will. “I will not marry him, Mom,” I ranted, my voice loud yet shaky, one could sense the anger and hurt in my tone. Gianna, my mother, stood at the doorway of the room, her arms folded across her chest as she stared at me with a cold and stern gaze. Her blonde hair packed up in a ponytail and her eyes wrinkled yet distant as they gazed at me. “I'm sorry dear but you don't have a choice in this Lucy!” she stated her tone void of emotions as if she were talking about something as simple as choosing between two dresses. “ You will marry him because I say so!” I laughed out loud a little not out of happiness but out of anger, shaking my head vigorously, my heart thumping in my chest. “I would not oblige to your requests mom, I don't even know him, he is a man I have never met or heard of, a stranger, You can't force me to marry someone I don't love." She let out a sigh, as she pushed herself into my room walking towards me. “ I know this is hard to take in but at this point, we have no choice, if you don't marry him, he will end my life,” she paused, pushing a strand of golden hair away from my face. “ You think I want this? Do you think I want my daughter to get married to a cold and ruthless billionaire? Of course not, but this is the only way we can repay him.” “Repay him?” I repeated, my voice slightly rising. “Repay him for what, Mom?” Gianna looked away from me and for the first time, I saw a flicker of fear in her eyes. “For everything, Lucy. For the last three months, ever since your father’s health deteriorated, I’ve been trying to keep this family afloat. I’ve been working to prevent bankruptcy, keep the company running, and cover his medical expenses. The loans were piling up because your father couldn’t manage things, and in the process, I had to borrow from Oliver Smith. Now, I can’t pay him back.” “So you want to sell me into a marriage with Oliver Smith?” I scoffed, throwing my hands in the air. “He's a ruthless billionaire. He’s a stranger, Mom. How can you expect me to marry and love him?” “You don't have to love him, Lucy, just agree to this and do as he says, you will live your best life I promise you, and who knows this union could be a blessing to this family…” Gianna’s voice broke through my protest, sharp and bitter. “He owns us now. Your father’s business failed, the investments went south, and Oliver lent us the money. If we don’t pay him back in full, if you don’t marry him—he’ll ruin us. He’ll ruin me. And I’m not about to let that happen.” My stomach twisted, and I could feel the surge of fury rising inside me. “This is your mess, not mine! Before my father became so weak, the company was still doing okay but ever since you began to handle it, it has been failing. You have been investing in the wrong organization. Why am I the one who has to suffer for your mistakes? You’re asking me to marry a man I don’t know, a man I don’t love, because of your debt? Why don't you marry him yourself!” My mother’s hands shot out connecting with a pour crack against my cheek. The slap sent shivers down my spine and I winced in pain with my palm on my face as I looked up at my mother in shock. “Don't you ever speak to me in that manner again! Do you think you are too big for rules? You think I want this for you? Do you think I am happy with the mistakes I have made? It's high time we start being realistic Lucy. Your father's health is deteriorating, even if you don't want to do this for me, do this for him.” “That is not my fault mother, I shouldn't take the blame for this. I love Hunter,” I cried, my voice shaking. “And he is going to marry me soon. He is the one I love and want to spend eternity with, not some ruthless and cold billionaire I've never seen.” Gianna’s expression softened for a moment, but the bitterness crept back in as she spoke. “Hunter?” She almost spat the name. “He’s a broke up-and-coming artist with no future. Do you honestly think he can give you what Oliver Smith can? Do you honestly think he can protect you from the storm that’s coming? I don’t care about your love, Lucy. I care about your survival and safety. And right now, the only way to ensure that is to marry Oliver or he will come for all of us.” I walked away from her standing beside the window and looking out. “ if Dad were here, he wouldn't allow you to carry on with your evil deed. He wouldn't let this happen.” Gianna let out a bitter laugh, a humorless sound that echoed through the quiet room. “It’s because of your father that we’re in this mess, Lucy. You know that, don’t you? He left me with the burden of this family and now I failed at it, this is the price we pay.” My heart sank. “You’re blaming Dad for all of this?” She didn't flinch. “I’m not blaming him. I’m just telling you the truth. We can’t keep pretending like everything is fine. You’re going to marry Oliver Smith whether you like it or not, Lucy, because that’s the only way to save this family. He’s the only one who can help us.” Tears threatened to spill over, but I fought them back. "I can't do this, Mom. Please, don’t make me." Gianna’s eyes hardened. “You don’t have a choice.” Before I could respond, she turned away and walked out of my room, leaving me standing there, feeling more dejected and horrible than I ever had before. I immediately ran to the bed, grabbed my phone, and dialed Hunter’s number, but the call went straight to voicemail. I tried again, then again, and finally, on the fifth attempt, I threw my phone down on the bed in frustration. My hands were shaking, and my heart was a mess of broken pieces. I didn’t know what to do. Someone knocked on the door. “I don't want to see you!” I called out but the door to my room opened, and my older brother, Hudson, walked in. He looked at me for a moment, his face unreadable. “What do you want, Hudson?” “You know, the billionaire has a thing with blondes, you know, the slim and blue-eyed ones,” he paused. “You should listen to Mom,” he said, his voice surprisingly calm. “You don’t have a choice in this.” I got on my feet angry and hurt. “ Shut up Hudson, it's your fault we are even in this mess! If you hadn't encouraged Mom to put the money we were getting from dad's company into bad investments we wouldn't be in so much debt, and I wouldn't have to marry Oliver.” Hudson slanted his eyes, his jaw clenched. “You think I don’t know that?” he said, his voice low, yet serious. “You think I haven’t regretted every single decision I made? But now we’re here, and there’s no way out except the one Mom’s offering. You’re going to marry Oliver Smith, and that’s it.” “No, I’m not!” I yelled at the top of my voice, the words barely able to escape from my throat. “I love Hunter! My heart belongs to him! Not to some cold, heartless billionaire!” Hudson's expression contorted from anger to something I couldn't quite place. A smile, an evil one. “You think Hunter loves you? Or do you think he is going to wait around for you? You must be delusional if you think he’s going to be there when you choose him over a billionaire like Oliver Smith?” I felt my chest tighten, a lump forming in my throat. “What do you mean?” Hudson chuckled darkly, walking toward the TV. He grabbed the remote, turned it on, and increased the volume. “Watch this little sister,” he said, a twisted smile on his lips. The screen flashed to life, and I blinked in surprise when I saw Hunter’s face on the screen. He was sitting in a studio, casually leaning back in his chair, looking relaxed, but there was something about his gaze that made my stomach twist. The interviewer spoke first, her voice cheerful and excited. “So, Hunter, you’re quickly becoming a household name. Your debut song ‘Love Me Harder’ was a massive hit. People are calling you the next big thing. What’s next for you?” Hunter smiled, looking like the same man I had fallen in love with five months ago. “Thanks! Yeah, it’s been a crazy ride so far, but I’m just getting started. I’ve got some new music coming out soon, and I’m excited about the future. It’s going to be a wild ride.” “And what about your personal life?” the interviewer pressed, a cunning smile on her face. “Are you seeing anyone?” Hunter’s eyes shimmered with mischievousness as he laughed. “No, I am single and very much available,” he said with a wink. “But right now, my focus is all on my music. No distractions.” “No distractions!” the interviewer repeated laughing heartily and every other thing she said faded, The smile on his face felt like a slap to my heart. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes as I stared at the screen, watching the man I loved—who had just told the world he was available—completely shatter my dreams. “This can't be real!”I mutter under my breath, Hudson walks over to me and whispers into my ears. “I Told you, baby sister, he doesn't love you as much as you do.” And in that moment, I realized Hudson was right. I am f****d!
