Mitchell's POV.
“It's time to go!”
The voice erupted into the room from the guard who stood on the doorway.
My stomach dropped and the hairs on my body stood still into the wind, knowing that only one thing would certainly be waiting for me outside there: Colossal disgrace.
The ceremonial robes were thick white silk threaded with silver moonstone. They wrapped around my body like a beautiful cage.
Every breath I took felt measured and borrowed. The handmaiden pinned the last fastener on my collar bone.
I stood back to admire their work. I stood there to admire the girl who didn't exist. A Luna-in-waiting. An heir to moonbridge.
I was none to all these things, and in less than an hour, every single soul in this pack would be aware of the abomination living in the palace for long.
The night drew crawled like a snail from its shell. I stepped outside.
They saw it.
Hundreds of touches lined the path leading to the sacred stones circle.
The moon sat enormously and directly above the peak, watching how it would disgrace me.
It flooded the entire ritual ground in a pale silvery color that made everything glow. Everyone in the moonbridge pack had gathered their thousand in a massive semi circle stretching as far as I could see in both directions.
Shoulder to shoulder. Breath rising in a small misty form above their heads..
All hands on me watching towards the centre. My legs suddenly ached. Everything inside had almost stopped working.
There stood beside me my mother, who had held my hand firmly walking to the centre. Her grip was firm, steady and warm, I hated how I needed it at that moment.
“Everything would be fine,” she muttered quietly in my ears. “ You have to get behind everything that happened in the sacred land.”
The word felt more like distaste than motivation in my ears, I let out a hard difficult smile.
“I know you didn't believe me” she muttered, clutching more to my fingers as we walked along. “ Just know I am your mother, I have experienced this before you… Tonight is the night. I can feel it. Your wolf has been sleeping, and it will rise.”
“That is enough!” I clutched my finger tighter, anger rose in me. Those words were causing pain more than comfort.
I looked at my father, I never knew he had been watching us from where he sat, I watched father squeeze his jaw tight, his face reddish like beet coal ready to destroy anything on its path.
The only thing running at the back of his mind is hate… I turned my face
The priest spread into the firelight as we walked into the circle.
Intense roaring from the crowd. One which equates to my imminent disgrace.
The priest raised his hand and everywhere fell to a hush.
“Mitchell… of Moonbridge, the daughter of alpha blood, child of the moon,” his burning crimson eyes turned towards me. “ The time has come for you to shed your human skin, take your sacred form and run to the peak,” his feeble hand pointed to the hill tight in front of me. “ The moon sword awaits the worthy wolf carrying it home.”
Every eye landed on me. I closed my eyes. I reached inward the way healers had taught me. I dived past the noise of my own to reach for my wolf.
Then nothing.
It was calm . Embarrassingly calm.
I opened my eyes. Right in front of me stood the priest. His mouth went agape.
Thick silence suddenly replaced the cheering. That I could easily hear my own heartbeat. My heart dropped on the floor. Shock painted on everyone's face.
Then a murmur ensued. Climbing gradually over one another like chaos. Angry. Afraid. Disbelieving.
I heard fragments breaking through the noise.
An alpha’s daughter with no wolf?
How long have you been hiding this?
What does this mean for the future of the pack? Who protects us now? Something inside me gave way.
“I am sorry,” the words tore out of my lips, my voice thickened, tears dripping from my wet eyeballs. I barely recognized my own voice . “ I am so…so sorry.”
I turned and buried my face in my mother's chest who had held me to her side and wrapped me around.
“Noooo….” A voice from one the elders snapper. Turning to my father who was just sitting physically but every part of him had gone somewhere no one knows. “ Tell this is a joke alpha… is this what you have been hiding from us…”
Then noises ensued among the elders who were shouting over each other, their noises crashed against one another demanding answers from my father. My father sat dejectedly in their midst like absorbing every blow with no expression.
The noise was still up when suddenly something like arrows fired from the top of the cliff close and close by.
We looked up. ROGUES!
My spirit almost left me, the pandemonium with the elders quickly turned to chaos. Arrows flying behind the mountain. Some of them landed in front of me and my mother. Some landed among elders and pack members. Every weak omega scattered in different directions.
“Hold the line!” my father's voice cut-through everything like an axe. His wolf exploded out of mid stride as he launched himself towards the front.
Pack warriors grabbed their weapons, they surrounded my father, shifted and charged towards the direction of the arrow. The air feels with thunder of paws and dry bones.
“Get the heir to the castle now!” One of the guards grasped my arm. I pulled free.
Then I saw it, a sword a few meters away.
I crawled toward it and grabbed it. It was heavy and unfamiliar in my hand.
My feet were already moving towards the fight. I wasn't going to flee. Or stand behind the stone war watching my pack bled.
I pushed through the fleeing crowd. Swords clanged together in horror and battle …but I was searching for an opening where I could fit in.
I had driven my sword at the back of a rogue who cornered two kids close to the stone altar and wanted to drive them away.
“Ahhh…!” The agonizing words crashed out of his lips.
Blood splits through the air like a warm spring. Splash over my face. My heart rammed against my chest.
“You bastard,” I cursed. I had seized the little pups from him.
I watched in horror as he crashed to the floor with a dull thud.
“Angels,” I spoke to the pups who I had rescued from his hand, in a calm voice. Panic registered on their faces. “Go hide behind that rock… cover your face… don't look at anything taking place here ..”
Their instructions had dropped when I heard my mother scream.
I spun.
There I saw her white wolf, brilliant and mistakable, like my mother Luna Selene.
She was fighting the largest wolf I have ever seen. She fights so ferociously that only a mother protecting her child could summon it.
But the rogue in front of her was not fighting with skill. He was fighting with so much survival mixed with violence.
He was ferocious, determined, taking several hits from my mother.
Not knowing he was looking for one opening.
His claws swung in a wide arc that connected with a sound that would hurt me for the rest of my life.
The white wolf dropped.
“Mother!”
The sword left my hand. My knees dropped to the ground crawling towards my mother.
I could hear her wolf whimpering and receding into her.
Her white silvery hair spread across the floor. Her face found mine.
“My girl,” she struggled with words.
“Dont…” my voice broke into tears. “D…don't s…say anything.. I am telling you right now that you are not allowed to leave me.”
Her lips moved. Her hand lifted halfways towards my face and fell.
Her eyes stayed open, staring into nothing.
“NO…. NO… M… MOTHER!”
