CHAPTER 3

Liam knew he was in trouble the second he stepped into class the next morning. Vanessa was already at the front, flipping through her notes, but the moment their eyes met, she gave him a knowing smirk. Here we go. He quickly took his seat, trying to ignore the way his pulse spiked. Jake, sitting beside him, nudged his arm with a grin. “So, how’s it feel to have your hot, flirty not-quite-girlfriend as your teacher?” Liam groaned. “Not helping.” Jake just laughed. “Dude, you’re doomed.” Before Liam could respond, Vanessa cleared her throat, getting the class’s attention. “Alright, let’s get started.” For the next hour, she taught like nothing was out of the ordinary—like she hadn’t sent him teasing texts all night, like she hadn’t practically promised things would get messy between them. But Liam wasn’t fooled. Because every so often, she’d glance his way. A little smirk, a lingering look—subtle things that no one else seemed to notice. Except him. And it was driving him insane. After Class Liam tried to make a quick exit, but Vanessa had other plans. “Liam,” she called out just as he reached the door. He sighed. Of course. Jake, the traitor, just grinned and patted his shoulder. “Good luck, bud.” Then he slipped out, leaving Liam alone with Vanessa. Slowly, he turned around. “Yeah?” She leaned against the desk, arms crossed, looking at him like he was the most interesting thing in the room. “You’re avoiding me.” Liam blinked. “I—what? No, I’m not.” Vanessa raised an eyebrow. “Mmhmm. You bolted the second class ended.” Liam adjusted his glasses. “I… had places to be.” She hummed. “Right. And it has nothing to do with the fact that you can’t look at me without blushing?” His ears burned. “I don’t—” Vanessa grinned. “Liam.” He swallowed. “What?” She stepped closer, voice dropping to a sultry whisper. “You do know you’re terrible at hiding things, right?” Liam clenched his jaw. This woman is going to kill me. She chuckled at his expression, then sighed dramatically. “This is going to be so much fun.” He narrowed his eyes. “For who?” Vanessa smirked. “Oh, sweetheart. For both of us.” With that, she patted his chest—lingering just a second too long—before sauntering past him, leaving behind a trail of vanilla and mischief. Liam exhaled sharply. This wasn’t just a challenge anymore. This was a game. And Vanessa? She was winning. Liam should have known better than to let his guard down. After his almost escape, he figured Vanessa would leave him alone for the rest of the day. Give him time to process everything. But Vanessa Carter didn’t play fair. Later that evening, he found himself in the library, tucked away in a quiet corner, trying to get some work done. He needed to focus—needed to get his mind off the woman who had been tormenting him since she walked into his life. But then, just as he was starting to concentrate, a familiar voice purred behind him. “Well, well. Look at you, all studious and serious.” Liam stiffened. No way. Slowly, he turned his head—only to find Vanessa leaning against the bookshelf, watching him with that wicked glint in her eyes. His throat went dry. “What are you doing here?” She shrugged, stepping closer. “Needed a book.” Liam frowned. “There are hundreds of books here.” She smirked. “Mmm. And yet, I only want the one sitting right in front of me.” His pulse spiked. Vanessa slid into the seat across from him, resting her chin on her palm. “You look good like this.” “Like what?” he asked, trying to sound unaffected. She tilted her head. “Focused. Determined.” Then her gaze flickered to his lips. “But a little too tense.” Liam swallowed hard. She is messing with me. “You should relax, big guy.” Vanessa leaned forward, lowering her voice. “You’re always so stiff around me.” Liam nearly choked. Vanessa laughed, clearly enjoying his reaction. “See? You’re adorable.” He exhaled sharply. “Are you trying to get me in trouble?” She raised an eyebrow. “Am I?” Liam clenched his jaw. “You’re my teacher.” Her lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. “For now.” Silence stretched between them. The air felt thick, charged with something Liam couldn’t quite name. Then, before he could stop himself, he said, “You really like pushing me, don’t you?” Vanessa’s smirk widened. “I love it.” And then—she moved. Before he could even process it, she was standing beside him, her hands resting lightly on the edge of his desk. She leaned down, close enough that he could smell her perfume—warm, intoxicating. Liam swallowed. Hard. “Vanessa—” She shushed him softly, tilting her head. “Tell me to stop.” He should. Every rational part of him was screaming at him to put space between them. But he didn’t. Because the truth was—he didn’t want her to stop. Vanessa studied him for a second, as if waiting for his answer. And when he said nothing, her smirk turned victorious. Then, she kissed him. Liam sucked in a sharp breath as her lips pressed against his—soft, warm, teasing. It wasn’t rushed, wasn’t forceful. Just a slow, lingering taste. Testing him. Tempting him. And then, just as quickly as she leaned in—she pulled away. Liam sat there, stunned, breathless. Vanessa’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction as she straightened. “Now that was fun.” Liam was wrecked. Vanessa chuckled, reaching out to adjust his glasses—like she hadn’t just turned his world upside down. “You should get back to studying, sweetheart.” Then, with one last smirk, she walked away, leaving him there—heart pounding, mind racing. Liam exhaled shakily, running a hand through his hair. What the hell had he just gotten himself into? Liam sat frozen in his chair, lips still tingling from Vanessa’s kiss. His brain refused to catch up with reality. She kissed me. Not a teasing brush, not a fleeting dare—no, she kissed him, deliberate and knowing, and then just walked away like it was nothing. His heartbeat pounded in his ears as he stared at the empty space where she had stood just moments ago. The air still carried the faint trace of her perfume, sweet and sultry, just like her. He was in so much trouble. A chair scraped against the floor beside him, snapping him out of his daze. Jake. His best friend plopped down with a curious smirk, arms crossed. “Alright, dude. You look like you’ve just seen a ghost—or had the best moment of your life. Which one is it?” Liam blinked. “I… I think I’m dying.” Jake snorted. “Called it. She got you, didn’t she?” Liam let out a slow breath, rubbing his face. “She kissed me.” Jake’s eyes widened. “No way.” Liam nodded stiffly. “Right here. In the library.” Jake whistled low. “Damn. Vanessa doesn’t play fair, does she?” Liam groaned. “Not even a little.” Jake leaned back, arms behind his head. “So… what’s the move? You gonna pretend it didn’t happen?” Liam hesitated. That was the logical choice, right? Pretend nothing happened, keep things professional, be responsible. But the problem was—he didn’t want to. Vanessa was under his skin now. And she knew it. Jake smirked knowingly. “You’re screwed, man.” Liam sighed. “Yeah. I know.” The Next Day – In Class Liam braced himself as he walked into class, half-expecting Vanessa to act like nothing happened—or worse, to call him out in some way. But to his surprise, she was… normal. Professional. Collected. Like she hadn’t kissed him in a library last night and sent his entire world spiraling. Liam took his seat, trying not to let the confusion show. Maybe she was just playing with him. Maybe the kiss meant nothing to her. That thought sent an irritating twist through his chest. As Vanessa began the lecture, Liam did his best to focus. Did his best—until she casually strolled past his desk and, without looking at him, whispered just loud enough for him to hear: “Still thinking about it?” His grip on his pen tightened. He glanced at her, but she had already walked away, continuing the lesson like she hadn’t just lit him on fire from the inside out. Liam exhaled sharply. Oh, she was good. But two could play this game. And for the first time, Liam wasn’t sure if he wanted to behave anymore.
