CHAPTER 9

Vanessa didn’t know how she managed to get through the next day without completely losing her composure. After last night—after Liam’s words, his kiss, and the near-disastrous close call—she had barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him. Felt him. And that was dangerous. She had told herself this had to stop. That it was just a lapse in judgment. But the moment she walked into class and saw Liam sitting in his usual seat, casually leaning back in his chair like nothing had changed, her heart betrayed her. Because everything had changed. And judging by the way he smirked slightly when their eyes met, he knew it too. After Class Vanessa stayed behind, hoping that if she just kept busy, she wouldn’t have to deal with the storm raging inside her. But, of course, Liam had other plans. The other students had already filed out when she heard the familiar scrape of a chair against the floor. She didn’t have to look up to know who was still there. “Liam,” she sighed, rubbing her temple. “You’re supposed to be in your next class.” “I had something more important to do.” Her fingers curled around the edge of her desk as he approached. “Liam—” “Don’t tell me we’re back to pretending.” His voice was low, laced with frustration. She finally met his gaze, and what she saw made her breath catch. He wasn’t just playing games. He wasn’t just some reckless boy with a crush. He was serious. She swallowed hard. “Liam, we—” “I’m done playing by the rules, Vanessa.” Her name. Again. On his lips, it sounded like a promise. Before she could react, he closed the space between them in two long strides, placing his hands on either side of her desk, caging her in. Her breath hitched. “Liam—” “You feel this,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. “Don’t lie to me.” Vanessa’s resolve was slipping—cracking under the weight of his intensity. And then— A knock at the door. She jumped back, nearly knocking over her chair. Liam’s jaw clenched as he straightened, his eyes flickering with frustration at the interruption. Vanessa smoothed her hands over her blouse, forcing herself to breathe before calling out, “Come in.” The door creaked open, and to her horror, it was Mr. Calloway. She stiffened instantly. Liam did too. “Vanessa, hey,” Calloway said, stepping inside, his usual charming smile in place. “Hope I’m not interrupting anything.” Vanessa forced a polite smile. “No, of course not.” Liam’s fingers twitched at his side, and she saw his jaw tighten further. Calloway glanced at him briefly before returning his attention to her. “I was wondering if you wanted to grab that drink we talked about?” Vanessa hesitated, sneaking a quick glance at Liam. His expression was unreadable. But his eyes? They were burning. She turned back to Calloway, her pulse quickening. “I—um—” Before she could answer, Liam stepped forward, his voice calm but firm. “She already has plans.” Vanessa’s eyes widened. Calloway raised an eyebrow. “Oh?” Liam turned his head slightly, meeting her gaze. His meaning was clear. This was a test. A choice. Vanessa swallowed hard, feeling the weight of both men’s stares. And in that moment, she realized— She had already made her choice. Now, she just had to face the consequences. The tension in the room was suffocating. Vanessa could feel both men’s eyes on her—Calloway waiting for an answer, Liam silently daring her to acknowledge the truth they were both avoiding. She should have just said yes to the drink. Should have let Calloway be the safer option, the easy way out. But her heart had already made its choice. Vanessa forced a smile, shifting her gaze to Calloway. “Actually… he’s right. I have plans.” She didn’t have to look at Liam to know he was pleased. She could feel it in the way his shoulders relaxed ever so slightly, the barely-there smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. Calloway’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he nodded. “Right. Maybe another time, then.” Vanessa could only nod, feeling her pulse hammer in her throat. Calloway gave Liam a brief glance before offering her one last polite smile and stepping out of the classroom. The second the door closed, Vanessa exhaled sharply, pressing her hands against the desk to steady herself. She didn’t even have time to gather her thoughts before Liam’s voice cut through the silence. “You chose me.” Her stomach twisted. She looked up, and there he was—standing tall, his dark eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that sent a shiver down her spine. Vanessa swallowed hard. “I—I didn’t choose anything, I just—” Liam took a slow step forward. “You did.” His voice was softer now, but there was no mistaking the possessiveness behind it. Vanessa hated how much she liked it. “I can’t keep doing this,” she whispered, shaking her head. “We shouldn’t be doing this.” Liam moved closer until there was barely any space left between them. “Then why do you keep coming back to me?” She hated that he had a point. Hated that she had no real answer. Liam reached up, brushing a strand of hair from her face, his touch featherlight. “You want me as much as I want you, Vanessa.” Her breath caught. “Liam—” “I’m not going to pretend this isn’t real,” he murmured. “And I don’t think you should either.” Vanessa’s fingers curled into fists at her sides. “It’s not that simple.” His eyes darkened. “Then let’s stop overcomplicating it.” Before she could react, Liam tilted her chin up and pressed his lips against hers. This kiss wasn’t like the last one. It wasn’t hesitant. It wasn’t unsure. It was hungry. Possessive. Like he had been waiting all day to do it again. Vanessa melted before she could stop herself, her hands gripping the front of his hoodie as he deepened the kiss. This was dangerous. This was reckless. And God help her—she didn’t want to stop. When they finally pulled apart, both breathless, Liam pressed his forehead to hers, his voice rough. “Tell me you don’t want this.” Vanessa opened her mouth—ready to lie, ready to walk away. But she couldn’t. Because she did want this. More than anything. And that scared her more than anything else ever had. Vanessa stood there, her body still pressed against the desk, her breathing uneven. Liam was so close—too close. His forehead rested against hers, his hands framing her waist in a way that made her feel trapped, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted to escape. His question still hung in the air between them. Tell me you don’t want this. She should have said it. Should have ended it right there. But the words wouldn’t come. Liam’s fingers brushed against her hip, his touch barely there. “Vanessa,” he murmured, his voice low and rough. A shiver ran down her spine. This was madness. Complete, reckless madness. And yet… She reached up, her fingers lightly gripping the fabric of his hoodie as if it was the only thing keeping her upright. “This can’t happen,” she whispered, though it sounded more like she was trying to convince herself than him. Liam’s lips tilted in a slight smirk. “Then why aren’t you pushing me away?” She should have. Instead, her fingers tightened, pulling him closer. A deep, satisfied hum rumbled in his chest as his nose brushed against her cheek. “You drive me crazy,” he admitted, his breath warm against her skin. “Do you know that?” Vanessa swallowed hard. “This is a mistake.” “Then let me make it with you.” His lips hovered just above hers, waiting—giving her the chance to walk away. She didn’t. The moment she tilted her chin up, it was over. Liam’s mouth crashed against hers, this time with no hesitation, no restraint. He kissed her like he had been starving for this—like he had been waiting for her to finally give in. And God help her, she did. Her hands slid up his chest, feeling the hard muscle beneath his hoodie, and Liam groaned into the kiss, his grip on her waist tightening. He pulled her flush against him, his warmth seeping into her skin, making her dizzy. Her heart was racing, her body burning. This wasn’t supposed to happen. They weren’t supposed to feel like this. But right now, she didn’t care. Right now, all that mattered was the way Liam kissed her—like she was the only thing in the world. Like he had no intention of letting her go. And she wasn’t sure if she wanted him to. Vanessa didn’t know how they ended up like this—her back against the desk, Liam’s hands gripping her waist as if he was afraid she’d disappear. And maybe she was. Maybe the moment this ended, she’d run. But right now, she didn’t want to run. She wanted this. The kiss deepened, Liam’s fingers flexing against her hips, his body pressing against hers just enough to make her breath hitch. She could feel the heat radiating off him, the restrained power in his grip. He was holding back—just barely. And she? She was losing herself in him. His lips left hers only to trail along her jaw, down her neck, slow and deliberate. Her fingers tangled in his hoodie, her own self-control slipping with every passing second. This was dangerous. A risk neither of them should be taking. But when Liam’s voice rumbled against her skin, sending a shiver through her entire body, she knew there was no stopping this. “Tell me you don’t want this,” he whispered. Vanessa’s breath was shaky. “I can’t.” A satisfied hum vibrated in his chest. “Good.” Then, just as Liam’s hands slid up her waist— A loud knock on the classroom door shattered the moment. Vanessa’s eyes flew open, her heart slamming against her ribs. Liam let out a frustrated groan, his forehead dropping against her shoulder as if physically pained by the interruption. “Seriously?” he muttered under his breath. Vanessa swallowed hard, the weight of reality crashing back down. This was wrong. This could not happen. She quickly straightened, pushing lightly against Liam’s chest. He hesitated for a second, his dark eyes searching hers, but then he stepped back—reluctantly. Another knock. Vanessa smoothed down her blouse, taking a deep breath before calling out, “One second!” Liam exhaled, running a hand through his already-messy hair. His eyes never left hers. “This isn’t over,” he murmured, voice low and laced with promise. Vanessa’s stomach flipped, but she didn’t have time to respond before turning toward the door. She just hoped—prayed—that whoever was on the other side hadn’t heard anything. Because if they had, this was about to get a lot more complicated. Vanessa took a deep breath, forcing her heartbeat to steady before unlocking the door. As it swung open, she was met with the familiar face of one of her colleagues—Mr. Thompson, the history teacher. He raised an eyebrow, glancing between her and Liam, who was still standing close enough that the heat of his presence lingered. “Vanessa,” Thompson said, his voice casual but observant. “I was looking for you. Staff meeting in ten minutes.” Vanessa nodded quickly, stepping away from Liam, trying to appear normal. “Right. I’ll be there.” Thompson’s gaze flickered toward Liam, who met his stare with an unreadable expression—calm, collected, but with a subtle edge that made it clear he didn’t care for the interruption. Thompson smirked slightly. “Didn’t mean to interrupt anything.” Vanessa’s stomach twisted. “You didn’t. Liam was just asking about an assignment.” It was a weak excuse, and she knew it. Liam, to his credit, didn’t contradict her. He simply adjusted his glasses, nodding once. Thompson hummed, clearly unconvinced, but didn’t press further. “Alright, then. See you in the meeting.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving behind a silence that felt heavier than it should have. Vanessa exhaled slowly before turning to Liam. “That was too close.” Liam tilted his head, smirking slightly. “Maybe.” She crossed her arms. “This is serious, Liam.” His smirk faded, replaced by something softer. “I know.” He hesitated, then stepped closer again, lowering his voice. “But tell me you regret it.” Vanessa opened her mouth, but the words wouldn’t come. Because she didn’t regret it. And they both knew it. Liam’s expression shifted, something smug yet sincere flashing in his eyes. “Thought so.” Vanessa shook her head, trying to regain control of the situation. “This can’t happen again.” Liam didn’t argue. He simply reached out, brushing his fingers against hers—just for a second—before turning toward the door. “See you tomorrow, Miss Reyes.” Then he was gone, leaving Vanessa standing in the empty classroom, her thoughts a chaotic mess. Because as much as she wanted to deny it, she knew the truth. This wasn’t over. Not even close. Vanessa stood frozen in the empty classroom long after Liam had walked away, his words echoing in her mind. "See you tomorrow, Miss Reyes." There had been something almost teasing in his voice, but beneath it, something else—something that sent a thrill down her spine no matter how much she tried to ignore it. This was dangerous. She knew that. And yet, the warmth of his touch still lingered on her skin. With a deep breath, Vanessa grabbed her bag and hurried toward the staff meeting, pushing aside thoughts of Liam. Or at least, trying to. --- The meeting was a blur. Discussions about schedules, curriculum, and upcoming events droned on, but Vanessa barely processed any of it. Across the table, Mr. Thompson shot her a look—one that made her uneasy. Did he suspect something? She shifted in her seat, schooling her expression into something neutral. She couldn’t afford to let anything slip. Not now. When the meeting finally ended, Vanessa gathered her things quickly, eager to escape before Thompson could say anything. But just as she reached the door, his voice stopped her. “Vanessa.” She turned, forcing a smile. “Yeah?” Thompson leaned against the desk, arms crossed. “Everything okay?” Her pulse quickened. “Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?” He shrugged, but there was something knowing in his gaze. “You just seemed… distracted.” Vanessa forced a laugh. “Long day, that’s all.” Thompson nodded slowly, watching her a second too long before finally letting it go. “Alright. See you tomorrow.” She nodded, walking away as quickly as she could without looking suspicious. This was getting too close. --- That night, Vanessa lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying the moment in the classroom. The way Liam had looked at her. The way he had touched her. She was in trouble. Because despite every warning in her head, every reason why this was a bad idea— She didn’t want to stop.
