Chapter 6: A New Down

502 Words
Ruth woke up the next morning and for the first time in three years, she did not wake up to the sound of Mama Nosa shouting. She woke up to the sound of birds and the soft hum of the air conditioner. She sat up on the bed, looking around the small but beautiful room in the boys quarters. It was still like a dream. She had survived the necklace trap. She had seen Vanessa, the queen of the mansion, being dragged out because of her. And David, the billionaire, had believed her. She knelt down beside the bed and prayed. "God, thank you. My mama, wherever you are, thank you for not leaving me. I will not disappoint you." After praying, she took her bath. Mrs. Itohan had given her two new gowns - not expensive, but clean and fine. One was blue, one was yellow. She wore the blue one. She looked at herself in the small mirror. She looked different. Not like the garri hawker anymore. She went to the main house for her first day of work. David was in the dining room, having breakfast - bread, tea, and eggs. He saw her and smiled. "Good morning, Ruth. You look good in blue." "Good morning sir. Thank you sir." "Sit and eat. Today we will start your training. I will teach you how to use a laptop. And we will go to the foundation office in Sapele Road. You will meet the staff." Ruth sat, nervous, eating small small. David looked at her and said, "Ruth, yesterday was hard, I know. But I want you to forget Vanessa. I want you to focus on your future. In six months, you will be a different person. You will be managing people. You will be speaking in front of crowds. Do you believe you can do it?" Ruth nodded, tears in her eyes. "Yes sir. I will try my best sir." "Good. No more calling me sir inside office. Call me David when we are alone. And call me Boss when people are there. Okay?" "Okay... David," Ruth said shyly, and they both laughed. It was the first time she had laughed freely since her mother died. But what Ruth and David did not know was that outside, Mama Nosa and Vanessa were already inside a keke, heading to a native doctor in Upper Sakponba for juju. Vanessa wanted to make David hate Ruth forever. Mama Nosa said, "That girl don get luck for city, but we go spoil am. We go make her run mad for that mansion." Vanessa brought out 20,000 naira. "Baba, make her see nightmare every night. Make David begin to see her as a witch." The native doctor collected the money and started chanting. Inside the mansion, Ruth suddenly felt a cold wind blow across her neck, even though all windows were closed. She shivered. David noticed. "Are you cold?" "No... I just... I feel somehow..." The battle for Ruth's destiny had entered spiritual level.
