The Confrontation with the servants
After both of them, Mr. Charles Jones and Jignesh return to the main house they see Mrs. Singhania is sitting in the living room in one of the sofas waiting for them. When they enter the room Mrs. Singhania asked if they have found any clue and knows who the drug addict is. Mr. Jones replied only ”yes” to her questions. After hearing this Mrs. Singhania gets curious and excited to know the person but Mr. Jones asked her to cool down and relax as he does not want anyone to know about the matter as it may alarm the real person and he may run from the house. So he requested Mrs. Singhania and even Jignesh to stay calm and behave normally as they do in their everyday lives. Slowly the time passes by ad it is lunchtime and so all three of them proceed towards the dining room to have their lunch.
After the lunch is over they all again return to the living room and take their seats on the sofa. Both Mrs. Singhania and Jignesh is too much curious about knowing the drug addict and is eagerly waiting for Mr. Jones to reveal the name of the culprit. All three of them are having a normal conversation when Mr. Nirmal arrives at the house and enters the room. He is carrying a bag with him which attracted both Mrs. Singhania and Jignesh’s attention. When summoned about his unexpected visit to the house by Mrs. Singhania, Mr. Nirmal replies, “I have been called by Mr. Jones to visit the house with some equipment as soon as I can.”
To this, both Mrs. Singhania and Jignesh gets stunned when they heard the word “equipment”. Now Mr. Jones requests Mrs. Singhania to call for all her servants in the house and summon them to gather in the living room area. He also calls for the security guard and asked him to not let anyone in and out of the house until he has been asked to do so. It took about fifteen minutes for the entire staff members to gather in the living area. After all, the staffs arrived Mr. Jones began speaking,
“I have summoned you here. I have come to know that one member of you is associated with illegal drug consumption. I know who is the person and so requesting him to come forward.”
Every one of the members of the staff looks at each other. They are having a fear of getting punished for no reason and at the same time are amazed and stunned by the statement of Mr. Jones. But, no one accepts the offense of consuming drugs. So, Mr. Jones again speaks,
“Like you, all decide to not accept your offense. I have no other option left other than performing a test on you all. Remember the particular person who refuses to take the test will be the one who will be convicted of the offense. So, it is up to you all do you want to cooperate with me or not or get a harsh punishment even if you have not done anything wrong.”
Then Mr. Jones goes towards the entrance of the room and closes the door. He also advised Jignesh to make sure all the windows are closed and if not request Jignesh to close it down. After examining everything, the door and windows properly close Mr. Jones’s request, Mr. Nirmal to follow him into the hall with his bag. They both enter the big hall and Jignesh also follows them with a sense of curiosity. Then Mr. Jones closed all the windows and draw the curtains. The entire room is covered by unwanted darkness. Mr. Jones seeing Jignesh requests him to switch on the light. Than Mr. Nirmal takes out some glasses a pair of a spray bottle and light from his bag. After preparing the setup of the light he switched off the lights of the room. Then he gives one glass to Mr. Jones and one to Jignesh and the last one he wears himself.
Now Mr. Jones asked the staff members present in the living room to come inside one by one. They work accordingly and the first person enters the room. Now it is time for Mr. Nirmal to do the rest of the work. First, he uses a chemical spray on the hand of the person and then turns on the light which is of bright blue color. Now he asked the person to keep his hand under the light. Subsequently, both Mr. Jones and Mr. Nirmal look at the hands of the person wearing their glasses searching for something, which Jignesh doesn’t know what as everything is looking to be exactly the same in the eyes of Jignesh with or without the glass? The person is looking at the entire process quite amazed and mysteriously as he does not have any idea of what is happening in there and neither do Jignesh. After some time Mr. Nirmal switch off the bright light and asked the person to get out of there and send the next person in.
The process continues and the majority of the staff are a bit amazed at the entire process and look at the entire setup mysteriously. Some of them are even quite afraid of applying the spray to their hands and refuse to do so. The most frightened, among them is the house manager Govardhan Kaka. He is behaving very strangely by seeing the setup and when Mr. Nirmal is about to use the chemical spray on his hands Govardhan kaka gets so frightened that he is about to faint. Hence, Mr. Jones offers him a chair to sit and asked Mr. Nirmal to use the spray which Govardhan kaka continues to refuse but finally on the intervention of Mr. Charles Jones he agrees to do the test. When they examine his hands under the blue light their expression changes a bit which is noticed by Jignesh and both of them look at each other. Jignesh also looks at the hands of the old man and he is surprised by what he sees. The hands of the old man are covered with white powder type substances which can be seen only when Jignesh wears his glasses and the same vanishes when he removes his glasses and the light is turned off with the glasses on. Jignesh is quite astonished by seeing the entire thing and can not understand what he has just seen in the hands of the old man. Govardhan kaka is the last one among the staff members and so after examining him and sending him out Mr. Nirmal put in all his instruments, the spray bottle, the glasses, and the bright blue light into his bag which he has brought with him. At the same time, Mr. Jones draws back the curtains letting the sunlight enter the room and making the area illuminated with the brightness of the daylight. Then, all three of them get out of the room and enters the living area where everyone including Mrs. Singhania is eagerly waiting for the results and to know the name of the drug addict person.
Now, everyone is eagerly waiting for Mr. Jones to speak and know who is the culprit and the drug addict. Hence Mr. Jones does not increase the curiosity of Mrs. Singhania and the other housemates and Jignesh anymore and begins to speak,
“As you have seen the test you all are eager what was going on inside there (pointing towards the great hall). So, before coming to the house I have asked Mr. Nirmal to bring the equipment you have just seen. This is used by the government authorities to detect different clues about the person who is addicted to drugs. The spray is a chemical that can trace the evidence of drugs on a surface and on the human body. When it is checked under a UV light the presence of the drug is visible which a person has touched a few hours ago. Apart from this, it causes irritation on a person's skin who is a drug addict but, there is a disadvantage that the chemical can be easily removed using water and soap. It is just an hour away when severe itching will start on the hands of the particular person.”
After a few moments, Govardhan kaka asked Mrs. Singhania to prepare for some fresh juice for her and the guest. To which Mrs. Singhania approve. After ten to fifteen minutes Govardhan kaka return with the glass of juice. After he keeps the tray on the table. Mr. Jones called him to come near him and asked Mr. Nirmal to switch off the lights. Then he takes out a torch from his pocket which produces UV light and sees that his hand has turned blue and shows it to all inside the room. Then he asked Mr. Nirmal to put on the light. Neither a single one present inside the room including Govardhan kaka can not understand why his hand has turned blue in the UV light. Everyone is astonished by it and there is pin-drop silence in the entire room. Mr. Jones breaks the silence by starting to speak.
“The color which just appears is nothing but it appears because of the UV light. just checking if he has washed his hands with soap or not. I find that he has done so as there are small pieces of soap between his nail. And the test which I have conducted earlier is nothing. It does not prove anything as the spray does not trace any evidence of drugs under any circumstances or any UV light. The spray also causes no itching and the entire plot is a trap to catch the culprit.”
Everyone present there looks stunned and is looking at each other with utter curiosity. Mr. Jones continues,
“The name of the drug addict is Govardhan Ahuja, who is your beloved Govardhan kaka. As he is the only person who has left this room and gone into the kitchen to make fruit juice for us rather than ordering his staff. He actually wants to get rid of the chemical which he thinks will cause itching in his hand as he is the one who is addicted to drugs. He does not know that whatever Mr. Jones says is a fib and nothing else. So, pointing towards Govardhan kaka he exclaimed: he is the drug addict the person we are searching for since morning.”
Govardhan Ahuja or Govardhan kaka tries to run from the house. But as he has grown old he can not do so and is caught by Mr. Nirmal before he can run and is taken into custody. None present there is able to believe this especially Mrs. Singhania as he is one of the oldest staff and is also very trustworthy. Mr. Nirmal than hand over Govardhan Ahuja to his colleagues so that they can take him to the district police station at Shimla.
