"You're safe now."
Those words echoed in my head as Caden's car pulled away from Ironpeak territory. I sat in the back seat, watching my old life disappear through the window.
Owen was driving. Caden sat beside me, quiet but present. I could feel the weight of his attention, even though he was not looking directly at me.
"Are you okay?" he asked after a while.
"I do not know," I answered honestly. "I feel... numb."
"That's normal. Shock."
"I just left everything I've ever known."
"Everything that hurt you," he corrected gently.
"Still. It's scary."
"I know."
We drove in silence for a while. The landscape changed from forests to open road. I had never been this far from Ironpeak. My whole life had been contained in that small territory.
"How long until we reach Frostholm?" I asked.
"Three hours," Owen answered from the front.
Three hours. Three hours until my new life started.
If I even had a new life. What if this was a mistake? What if I had just made everything worse? No, Luna said firmly. We did the right thing. For once, we chose ourselves.
I wanted to believe her.
"Can I ask you something?" I said to Caden.
"Of course."
"Why did you really help me? You barely know me."
He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I told you. I've been where you are.”
"What do you mean?"
He looked out the window. "My parents died when I was young. I was forced to take the throne at nineteen. There were people who thought I was too young, too weak. They tried to control me. Manipulate me. Make me into something I was not."
"What happened?"
"I stopped listening to them. I surrounded myself with people who actually cared about me. And I became the king I wanted to be, not the one they expected."
"That sounds lonely."
"It was. For a long time." He looked at me. "But it was better than being someone's puppet."
I understood that. More than he knew.
"The job I offered you is real," Caden continued. "I do need help with the summit. But I'll be honest...I also saw someone who needed a way out. And I had the power to provide it. So I did."
"You could have just let me run away. Let me figure it out myself."
"I could have. But you would have struggled. Suffered. And I was in a position to prevent that. What did you expect?"
His answer was so simple. So logical. But it felt revolutionary to me. Someone with power using it to help, not hurt.
"Thank you," I said quietly.
"Stop thanking me."
"I cannot help it."
He smiled slightly. "Fair enough."
My phone buzzed in my clutch. I pulled it out and saw texts flooding in.
Mom: You've made a huge mistake. Come home NOW.
Dad: This behavior is unacceptable.
Return immediately or face consequences.
Declan: You think the Alpha King actually
cares about you? You're nothing. He'll realize that soon enough.
Isabel: Enjoy your new life while it
lasts. I give it a week before you're begging to come back. I showed the messages to Caden. His expression darkened.
"Block them," he said.
"What?"
"All of them. Block their numbers. You do not need their poison in your life anymore."
"But they're my family..."
"Family doesn't treat you the way they did.
Family doesn't make you feel worthless.
Those are just people who share your blood. That's not the same thing."
His words hit hard. Because they were true.
I blocked all their numbers. One by one. Each block felt like cutting a chain that had been dragging me down.
When I finished, I felt lighter. Free.
"Good," Caden said. "Now you can move forward without looking back."
The rest of the drive passed in a blur. We stopped once for food...a small diner where Caden insisted I actually eat something. I hadn't realized how hungry I was until the food arrived.
"You're too thin," Owen observed, not unkindly.
"I am fine."
"When's the last time you ate a full meal?"
I tried to remember. "I... do not know."
Owen and Caden exchanged a look.
"That changes now," Caden said firmly.
"You'll eat regular meals at Frostholm. No arguments."
"Yes, sir." The words came out automatically...years of training to obey authority.
Caden frowned. "You do not have to call me sir. Caden is fine."
"But you're the Alpha King..."
"And you're my employee. Not my subordinate. There's a difference."
I did not know how to respond to that.
After we finished eating, we got back in the car. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink. Beautiful.
"We're almost there," Owen said.
I looked out the window and saw it...Frostholm territory. Mountains rose in the distance, covered in pine trees.
The land was wild and beautiful and completely different from Ironpeak.
"It's huge," I whispered.
"Largest territory in North America," Caden said. There was pride in his voice. "We have three major towns, multiple smaller settlements, and the capital city where the royal estate is located." "Royal estate?"
"The castle. Though we do not really call it that. Too pretentious."
A castle. I was going to be living in a castle.
This felt surreal.
We drove through a massive gate with guards who saluted as we passed. The road wound through forest, then opened up to reveal a sprawling estate that did, in fact, look like a castle. Stone walls.
Towers. Everything.
"Holy..." I trailed off.
"Welcome to Frostholm," Caden said.
The car pulled up to the main entrance. More guards. Staff members rushing out to greet us. Everyone bowed to Caden.
I felt completely out of place.
Caden must have sensed my anxiety because he said quietly, "Breathe. You're safe here. I promise."
A woman approached...older, with kind eyes and gray hair pulled back in a bun.
"Your Majesty. Welcome home."
"Mrs. Torres, this is Rhea Evenstar. She'll be staying with us. Please prepare the east wing guest suite for her."
"Of course." Mrs. Torres turned to me and smiled warmly. "Welcome, dear. I amthe head housekeeper. If you need anything at all, just ask."
"Thank you," I managed.
"Let's get you settled," Caden said, gesturing toward the entrance.
I followed him inside, my eyes wide. The interior was even more impressive than the exterior. High ceilings. Elegant furniture. Artwork on the walls. But it was not cold or impersonal. It felt... lived in.
Comfortable.
"This way," Caden led me down a long hallway.
We climbed a grand staircase, then went down another hall. He stopped at a door and opened it.
"This is your suite," he said.
I stepped inside and gasped. The room was huge. There was a sitting area with a couch and chairs. A desk by the window. A door that led to what looked like a bedroom. Another door to a bathroom.
It was bigger than my entire bedroom at Ironpeak.
"This is too much," I said.
"It's standard for guests."
"I am not a guest. I am an employee."
"You're both." Caden walked to the window and looked out. "The office where you'll work is down the hall. Breakfast is served at seven, lunch at noon, dinner at six.
You're welcome to eat in the dining room with everyone or have meals brought here if you prefer privacy."
"Everyone?"
"Me, Owen, the senior staff. We're pretty casual about meals. Nothing formal unless there's a diplomatic function."
That was a relief. I was not ready for formal dinners.
"Your belongings should arrive within the hour," Caden continued. "Mrs. Torres will help you unpack if you'd like. Tomorrow we can start going over your duties. But tonight, just rest." "Okay."
He turned to leave, then paused. "Rhea ?"
"Yes?"
"You made the right choice. Leaving. It takes courage to walk away from the familiar, even when it's hurting you. do not forget that."
Before I could respond, he was gone.
I stood alone in this beautiful room, in this massive castle, in a territory I had never been to before.
I should have been terrified.
But I was not.
For the first time in years, I felt safe.
We're free, Luna said softly. We're finally free.
I walked to the window and looked out.
The sun had fully set now. Stars were appearing in the dark sky.
A new beginning.
I just hoped I was strong enough for it.
A knock on the door startled me. "Come in."
Mrs. Torres entered with a tray. "I brought tea and some cookies. Thought you might like something sweet after the day you've had."
"That's very kind. Thank you."
She set the tray on the table. "I also wanted to say...we're glad you're here. The King needs someone like you." "Someone like me?"
"Someone genuine. This place can be very political. Full of people with agendas. It's nice to have someone who's just... real."
I did not know how to respond to that.
Mrs. Torres smiled. "Get some rest, dear.
Things will look better in the morning."
After she left, I drank the tea and ate two cookies. They were delicious. Chocolate chip.
When was the last time someone had brought me cookies?
I couldn't remember.
My belongings arrived as promised. It was not much...just three boxes and two suitcases. Everything I owned fit into five containers.
That was depressing.
But also freeing. No baggage. No weight. Just the essentials.
I unpacked slowly, putting clothes in the closet, toiletries in the bathroom. The burgundy dress I had worn to the ball went in the very front of the closet. A reminder of the night everything changed.
When I finished, I sat on the bed. It was soft. Comfortable. The kind of bed you could actually sleep in without feeling tense.
My phone buzzed. For a second, I panicked...had I missed blocking someone?
But no. It was a text from Dr. Sarah.
Sarah: I heard what happened. Are you okay?
I smiled and typed back: I am okay.
Actually, I think I might be better than okay.
Sarah: Good. You deserved to get out of there. Where are you?
Frostholm. Working for the Alpha King.
Sarah: WHAT. You have to tell me everything.
Tomorrow. It's been a long day.
Sarah: Okay. But I want details. Happy for you, Rhea . Proud of you.
Thank you. That means a lot.
I set the phone down and lay back on the bed. My body ached. My mind was exhausted. But my heart felt... different.
Not broken.
Not numb.
Just... hopeful.
I closed my eyes and, for the first time in three years, fell asleep without crying.
