Chapter 3

LYRA’S POV When we got to my room, my trusted servants were already there waiting for me and a hot bath already set. I allowed them to pamper me, the girl hissing and mumbling at the number of marks littered on my body by Darius. As they were marks made by an Alpha, they might scar – just like the other marks made by him on my body. Darius was what one called a piece of s**t – well, in my books anyways. To some, he was a perfect Alpha – righteous and ever ready to help the people of his territory. To other, he was a merciless and sadistic scum who took pleasure in hurting others – most specifically me, his Mate. Freshly out of the tub, I looked at the full length mirror and took in all the scars that told a story of suffering and torment. I traced the one right in the middle of my chest, once again trying to see if I’d remember anything before my father found me. I scoffed, wondering why i even bothered. If I couldn’t remember the life I had before father found me at age 5 all those years back, why would I remember now? I wasn’t my father’s biological child. Loran, the late Alpha of the Winterbourne pack, had found me at the age of five and brought me back to the clan as his adopted daughter. No one knew where I came from, and neither did he tell me. I grew up to be his child and he loved me as such – even though Shiran and others reminded me time and time again of my so called “place”. After the ambush on one of his missions that left he m, his Enforcers and a handful of others dead and my uncle scared permanently for life on his face, my uncle, Lucas, became the new Alpha of the pack. I was fifteen years old then and his funeral was the hardest day of my life. And to make matters even more shitty for me, it was at that occasion that I discovered I was the destined Mate of the then heir of the well-known Lupin pack. We both had looked at each other with horror, as we had just met for the first time and being hit with such shocking news. My uncle had immediately known what had taken place and before I knew it, he and Darius were discussing how to join the clan. It was then I knew my peaceful and sheltered life was over, and then a year later, I was married and Mated to Darius. I walked over to my bed after drying up my body and flopped onto the bed with a groan. Around me, Mirai and the others were bursting away, no doubt preparing what I’d wear for the gathering tonight. I groaned into a pillow once I realized that it was already midday. I drifted off into a light slumber and when I was awoken again, it was to Mirai dressed in a nice clothes consisting of upper robes that had large slits that showed off the trousers she wore. “Already?” I groaned out. Mirai nodded. “We have to be there to welcome the guest, my Lady.” I buried my face back into the pillow again and heaved a muffled groan. With more coaxing from Mirai, I got ready into an outfit and jewellery befitting my status as a Luna. Mirai packed my waist long red hair into a braided bun, placing more jewellery in it. As I gut prepared to face the night, I prayed to the Goddess that they’d be no drama. Well... looked like my prayers failed to reach the goddess. Just like everyone around me, i stared at the two people standing before me with an incredulous expression. When I saw Darius walking into the hall with his mistress on his arm, I looked at them stoically for some moments before walking away to talk to a handful of my late father’s friends who looked at the scene with displeasure and disgust. Selene wore an outfit with a colour matching Darius and no doubt to many thar spoke of nefarious intentions. I watched from afar as Selene interacted with people – some who gave her fake smiles. It wouldn’t surprise me that they all saw how dumb she truly was – walking in with the Mate of another with her head held up high. Others saw a new pawn on the board and an easier door to get to Darius as I was a difficult person to impress. Then came that broke the camel’s back – and my practical non-existent patience. Darius called the room to his attention and announced that he was getting engaged to Selene and in a month’s time he was getting married to her. One could hear a pin drop with how utterly silent it was. No one cheered or clapped. Everyone just looked at the smiling couple in disbelief. “What.” My voice, although low, was loud and filled with authority. I stepped forward and stood in front of them. “What is the meaning of this.” My words weren’t a question – they were a demand. A demand to know what the hell the two of them were doing. Selene gave him a smug look, gluing herself to Darius. “Just like my Lord said, he and I are now engaged and soon to be wed. In a month’s time, I’d be joining the family.” Darius gave her a look that one would call lustful, his arm wrapping around her waist and holding her tight. Shame enveloped me and the dam in me collapsed.
