Chapter 16: The Competitors’ Summit

1628 Words
The air inside the grand ballroom of The Cavendish Hotel was thick enough to choke on. This wasn't just a standard corporate gala; it was the Competitors’ Summit for the Paragon Bid. At the center of the room sat one massive, sprawling mahogany conference table, designed specifically to force the world's most ruthless titans to look their predators squarely in the eye. Adrian leaned back in his seat, his tailored suit cutting a sharp line of dominance. Beside him, Selena sat in her designated accompaniment chair, projecting a polished, untouchable confidence. For the most part, the table was full. But two of the primary CEO chairs remained glaringly empty: Vale Empire and Laurent Tech. Whispers rippled down the table, sharp and impatient. “Is the Vale heiress even real?” “I heard the entire bloodline was wiped out in the crash. It has to be a corporate hoax.” “A shell company trying to spook the board before the bid even begins.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. He knew she was real, but the waiting was an intentional insult. Then, the heavy double doors swung open. The whispers died instantly, sucked out of the room like a vacuum. Elena walked in, the absolute picture of winter and authority. Every camera flash from the hallway violently illuminated her before the doors snapped shut, leaving her commanding the room's gravity. She wasn't alone. Damien flanked her right side, while an older, distinguished gentleman and a tall, dangerously cold man flanked her left. Adrian’s breath hitched. He couldn't forget Damien from the gala, but it was the new man who immediately seized his attention. His features were a sharper, hardened mirror of Elena’s. It hit Adrian with the force of a physical blow. A brother. And from the sheer, commanding way he carried himself, an older one. The public record swore both siblings had perished. Adrian felt a sickening drop in his stomach as the sheer magnitude of his own ignorance swallowed him. He had spent years married to this woman. He had slept in the same bed as her. And he knew absolutely nothing about the empire—or the family—she had been building in the shadows while he looked the other way. Further down the table, a few of the older, silver-haired titans shifted in their seats, their eyes widening as they recognized the older man standing behind Elena. “Is that... Lucian?” The room went dead silent. If Arthur Vale's legendary legal advisor was standing at her back, the rumors were dead. She had the keys to the Vale accounts. She was the true heiress. Elena gracefully took the Vale CEO chair. Damien slid into the COO seat beside her, completely unbothered by the stares. Alessandro and Lucian took their respective advisor seats. A young, cocky executive from a rival tech firm leaned forward, unable to handle the sudden, suffocating shift in power. "With all due respect, before we begin the summit, shouldn't there be a verification process? We can't just blindly accept someone claiming the Vale lineage without—" Elena didn't even blink. She didn't have to. Alessandro leaned forward, his elbows resting heavily on the table. His dark eyes locked onto the young executive with a crazed, predatory stillness that made the air in the room drop ten degrees. "My sister doesn't have to prove s**t to any of you," Alessandro said, his voice a low, lethal hum that carried across the entire room. A collective gasp echoed off the high ceilings. The titans realized simultaneously that the Vale Empire hadn't just brought lawyers. They had brought an enforcer. Sensing the room's paralysis, Adrian seized the opening, desperate to strip away Elena's armor and regain the upper hand. "Very intimidating," Adrian said smoothly, his eyes darting to Damien. "But let’s discuss corporate integrity. Damien, you are currently the COO for the Vale Empire, yet Laurent Tech is also a registered participant in this bid. Is it even permitted for an heir to hold a concurrent, active leadership role in two separate competing companies?" Selena let out a soft, mocking laugh. "It seems some empires need to borrow their talent to stay afloat." Damien met Adrian's glare with a lazy, razor-sharp smirk. "I might be the heir to Laurent Tech, Adrian. But I never said I was the CEO." Silence rang in Adrian’s ears. His mind violently scrambled back to the private files and dossiers he had stayed up reading. They had all listed Damien as the inevitable heir, yes—but they never explicitly confirmed an official transfer of executive power. A cold, heavy realization washed over Adrian. Elena hadn’t just stumbled into a loophole; she had architected it. She knew the Paragon Bid rules inside and out, and she had purposely utilized Damien’s technical unemployment on paper to weaponize him for the Vale Empire. It was a flawless, terrifying play, and Adrian had walked right into it. Before Adrian could even formulate a response, the double doors opened again. Victor Laurent strode into the room. Adrian had only seen him in static, clinical dossier photos, but in the flesh, the sheer weight of the man's presence was suffocating. Victor didn't look like an aging titan ready to step down; he looked like a silver-haired king in a bespoke suit, radiating a sharp, charismatic lethality completely masked by jovial charm. He had the kind of disarming smile that made people hand over their empires and thank him for the privilege. Victor bypassed the stunned crowd and dropped effortlessly into the empty Laurent Tech CEO chair. "Sorry I'm late," Victor announced, his booming voice waving off the tension. "My son’s loyalties currently lie elsewhere, and frankly, I couldn't be prouder. I appointed an executive as acting CEO months ago, so Damien's hands are perfectly clean for this bid." The room sat in a stunned, suspended silence as the brilliance of the maneuver sank in. Victor looked around the table, his eyes crinkling with fatherly amusement. "We may stand on opposite sides of the board today, but he's still my son. A little healthy competition never hurt anyone, right?" The tension finally broke, replaced by a reluctant, awed acceptance from the board. Victor's warm, commanding presence completely disarmed the room, leaving Adrian completely stranded in his own failed attempt to cause a rift. The Chief Moderator stepped up to the podium. As the direct mouthpiece for the untouchable billionaires who funded the Paragon Bid, he commanded absolute respect. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome," the Moderator began, his voice projecting authority. "Congratulations are in order. Out of hundreds of declarations of interest, your firms alone survived the selection process to receive an invitation. But remember, the Paragon Bid is a test of corporate endurance, strategy, and above all, clean competition." A few knowing smirks flashed around the table. "This summit is your opportunity to look your competitors in the eye. To measure their strengths, and perhaps, uncover their weaknesses." The Moderator paused, his gaze sweeping the table before landing squarely on Elena. "It has been a long time since the last bid. The last titan to conquer this room was Arthur Vale. We look forward to seeing who will take the crown this time." With the formal address concluded, the rigid seating arrangement broke, shifting into the mingling phase. Victor immediately approached Elena's camp, exuding genuine grief and nostalgia. He placed a heavy, comforting hand on both Elena and Alessandro’s shoulders. "It haunts me," Victor said quietly, his voice thick with raw sorrow. "Going through that rough patch years ago... moving away, losing touch. I never got to speak to Arthur one last time. I am so deeply sorry for your loss." Lucian nodded solemnly. "Victor and your father were incredibly close in the old days. He was a good friend to Arthur." Elena offered a polite, respectful nod. For a moment, the cutthroat reality of the Paragon Bid faded, replaced by a quiet, shared understanding between two families who had lost too much. In a room full of sharks, Victor Laurent stood out as a rare, supportive pillar. A few feet away, Alessandro grabbed a glass of champagne and stepped up beside Damien. He clinked his glass against Damien's. "You've done a hell of a job looking out for my sister," Alessandro murmured, a rare, genuine smirk touching his lips. "I respect that. Keep up the good work." Damien chuckled, taking a sip. "Someone has to make sure she doesn’t burn down the city." Across the room, Adrian could no longer stand the distance. He moved through the crowd, Selena trailing confidently beside him, until they cornered Elena near the sprawling glass windows. "Quite the theatrical entrance, Elena," Adrian said, his voice laced with condescension. Elena looked at him, then let her gaze slide right through Selena as if the woman was nothing more than dust on the glass. Selena's polite smile strained. Before Adrian could take another step forward, Alessandro inserted himself directly into Adrian's personal space, completely severing his line of sight to Elena. Alessandro extended a hand. In a room full of peering executives, refusing the handshake was corporate suicide. Adrian took it. The moment their palms met, Alessandro’s grip clamped down like a steel vice. Adrian’s jaw locked as his knuckles ground together under the excruciating, bone-crushing pressure. Alessandro leaned in, the polite smile never leaving his face as his dark, empty eyes dug into Adrian's soul. "You had your chance to realize who you were married to, Adrian," Alessandro whispered, his voice a lethal, quiet promise. "Now, your time is up. Watch your back. Because no matter what you do, we are coming for you—and I am going to break a lot more than just your company."
