My fingers trembled as I lifted the phone to my ear. “Hello…”
“Mira.” David’s voice came through immediately. Low. Calm. Yet something about it sounded different. “I’ve been trying to reach you.”
I swallowed. “David.”
“Where are you?”
I glanced at my parents before answering, “I’m at my parents’ house.”
“Come home.” His words were simple. Direct. No explanation. No question. No apology. Just two words.
“David...”
“I said come home. I’ll wait for you.”
The call ended, and I slowly lowered the phone.
The sitting room remained completely silent.
“What did he say?” my mother asked anxiously.
“He wants me to come home.”
“No.”
The answer came immediately. Both my parents spoke at almost the same time.
I looked between them. “I have to go.”
“You have to?” my father repeated. “After another woman came into this house claiming your husband has a child with her?”
“He deserves to answer.”
My mother reached for my hand. “Mira, please don’t go. What if this is another trap? What if Vanessa planned this? What if he only wants to manipulate you?”
My heart hurt. “I know.”
“Then stay.”
I shook my head slowly. “If I don’t go. “I’ll never hear his side.”
My father sighed heavily. “You still trust him?”
I couldn’t answer. Did I? I wasn’t even sure anymore. But I needed answers.
“I’ll be careful.”
“No.” My father’s voice hardened. “You are my daughter. I will not watch you walk back into confusion.”
Tears gathered in my eyes. “Dad, I have to.”
He looked away. For several long seconds nobody spoke. Then my mother suddenly stepped forward and gently tried taking my phone. “Let me do him myself. I’ll call him myself.”
“No.”
“Mira…”
“No, Mom.” I pulled the phone back. “This is between my husband and me.”
She stared at me with tear-filled eyes. “I don’t want you getting hurt again.”
“I know. But if I keep running back here every time something happens, my marriage will already be over.” Those words broke something inside her. She burst into tears. I hugged her tightly. “I’m not leaving because I don’t love you. I’m leaving because I need the truth.”
She sobbed against my shoulder. My father slowly walked over.
“If that young man hurts you again.” His jaw tightened, he will answer to me.”
“I know.”
He reached into his pocket and handed me my car keys. “Call us the moment you arrive.”
“I will. And if anything feels wrong. I’ll come back.”
He nodded reluctantly. I hugged both of them one last time before walking toward the door. Every step felt heavier than the last.
But I couldn’t. Running away wouldn’t answer my questions. It wouldn’t erase Vanessa’s words. It wouldn’t silence the fear growing inside me.
I blinked away fresh tears and focused on the road ahead.
The world was moving on. Mine had come to a standstill. I remembered the first time David had driven me home after we got married. I had smiled the entire journey. He had reached over, squeezed my hand, and promised that no matter what happened, I would never have to face life alone.
The memory made my chest ache. When had everything changed? When had our laughter turned into silence? When had trust become questions?
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. Whatever waited for me at the mansion tonight. I needed to hear it from David himself. No more rumors.
David. Vanessa. Sarah. Anonymous letters. Dubai. The supposed child. Nothing made sense anymore.
By the time I reached the mansion, my heartbeat had become painfully loud. The security guards opened the gate. Everything outside looked normal. Too normal.
I parked.
Before I could even close the car door. The front door burst open. David stormed outside. He looked furious.
“Mira!” His voice echoed across the compound. I froze. He marched toward me. “What happened today?
So. He already knew.
“Vanessa came to my parents’ house.”
His expression changed instantly. “What?”
“Don’t pretend.”
“I’m not pretending.”
“She humiliated me in front of everyone.”
“I had nothing to do with that.”
“Really? She claimed your child is dying.”
“I told you before.”
“She brought documents.”
“I don’t care what she brought.”
“She said you abandoned them.”
“I said enough!” His voice exploded. I flinched.
Silence.
For several seconds neither of us spoke. Then I whispered, “Did you father that child?”
He stared at me. His fists slowly clenched. “Mira...”
“Answer me.”
He closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were filled with exhaustion. “I never cheated on you.”
“That isn’t what I asked. I asked if that child is yours.”
David didn’t answer. The silence between us became unbearable. I searched his face, hoping to find something anything that would tell me I wasn’t about to lose everything I believed in. Instead, all I saw was conflict.
His lips parted. Then closed again.
My heart sank.
“Why won’t you answer me?” I whispered.
“Mira…”
“No.” I shook my head, tears spilling faster. “Don’t say my name. Answer my question.”
His chest rose and fell with a heavy breath. “I wish things were as simple as you’re making them sound.”
“So there is something you’re hiding.”
His eyes immediately met mine. “I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.”My voice trembled. “Every time I ask you about Vanessa, you become someone I don’t recognize. You avoid my questions. You ask me to trust you, but you never give me the one thing I keep begging for. The truth.”
David looked away. That hurt even more. I laughed bitterly through my tears. “Look at me.”
Slowly, he did.
“If that child isn’t yours. Why is it so difficult for you to say it?
For a brief second, it looked like he was about to tell everything. Then something changed in his expression. Fear. Real fear.
“I can’t answer you the way you want.”
"What does that even mean?”
“It means.”There are things you don’t know.”
“Then tell me!” I cried. “I’m your wife. If everyone else knows pieces of your past except me, what exactly am I fighting for?”
His eyes filled with guilt. “I’ve been trying to protect you.”
“Protect me?” I laughed, the sound hollow and broken. Look at me, David. I’m already breaking. There isn’t anything left to protect.”
For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The evening breeze swept through the compound, but neither of us seemed to notice. The distance between us felt greater than ever before.
Finally, David took one slow step toward me.
“I already explained to you what happened between Vanessa and me. I told you everything that happened during our honeymoon in Dubai. Why do you keep letting this happen? Why do you always make us start arguing about the same thing again?” David ran both hands through his hair. “Mira, listen to me.”
“No! You listen to me for once.”
He fell silent.
"I have watched her humiliate me.” I have questioned my own sanity because of everything happening around me.” And you’re still asking me to be patient?”
David stepped closer, but I moved back.
“Mira.”
“Tell me the truth.”
“Vanessa is doing all of this on purpose.”
I stared at him.
“She wants to destroy our marriage. She’s manipulating every situation.
“Then stop her! If you know she’s doing this intentionally. Why haven’t you stopped her?”
David closed his eyes briefly. “It’s not that simple.”
I laughed bitterly. “Not that simple? My life is falling apart! I can’t even recognize myself anymore. I left my parents’ house hoping things would finally get better. But the moment I stepped back here, it's the same pain all over again.”
I looked directly into his eyes. “Tell me something, David. Did I do something wrong by falling in love with you?”
His entire body froze.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
David finally took a step toward me.
“You’ve never done anything wrong, Mira.” His voice was barely above a whisper. “The mistake was believing the past would stay buried.”
My heart skipped.
“The past?” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. David lowered his head. His silence frightened me more than any answer could. What past, David?”
He looked exhausted. “I never wanted you to find out like this.”
My heart pounded painfully. “Find out what?”
He looked at me, but instead of speaking, he let out a slow, shaky breath. Please. “I need you to trust me a little longer.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “A little longer?” I laughed bitterly, wiping away my tears. “That’s all you’ve been asking from me since the day we got married. But every time I do, another secret appears.”
"I know.”
“No, you don’t.” I took a step closer. “If you knew, you wouldn’t be standing here watching me fall apart. I defended you. I believed you. I chose you over every doubt in my mind. And now I don’t even know if I married the man I thought I did.”
“Mira…”
“I deserve the truth. I deserve to know who Vanessa really is. I deserve to know why she keeps coming after us. And I deserve to know why every time she’s mentioned, you look terrified.”
He simply stared at me. Then he nodded slowly, “You’re right.”
The words made my breath catch.
“I should have told you everything a long time ago.” He took another step toward me. “There are things about Dubai, about Vanessa, about my past that I’ve hidden because I believed I was protecting you.”But maybe protecting you was the biggest mistake I ever made.”
I searched his eyes. For the first time since all of this began, he looked ready to confess.
“Babe, Vanessa is my ex. I have nothing to do with her anymore except the child, which I’m not even sure is mine. Please ignore her act. I know what she’s up to. Don’t let her get to you that much.”
“Is this the confession, David?” I asked.
He slowly opened his mouth to speak.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
A loud, urgent knock echoed from the front gate. Both of us turned at the same time.
The knocking came again. Harder. David’s face instantly lost every trace of color. My stomach tightened.
Who could possibly be here at this hour?
