I heard the patrol signal from the upper room.
I was at the window before the echo finished.
The northern clearing was not visible from this angle,trees blocked the direct line but the quality of movement in the outer yard below told me everything the blocked sight line didn't.
Wolves moving fast toward the northern perimeter.
Zayden was among them and Kaelor behind him.
Then Rowan, which surprised me for half a second before I remembered that Rowan being here was no longer surprising.
I pressed my hand on the window glass and watched them disappear through the gate and then stood in the upper room with the fortress.
The senior wolves left on interior rotation were good.
But they were not Zayden and not Kaelor.
They did not make me secure.
