Indy snuck out of her room as quietly as she could. There was no way in hell that Ares would find out she'd been there all night. She would try her best to stay clear of that boy. It was a little before 6 A.M. on a Saturday morning, so everyone in their right mind was still asleep. Indy took a long, hot shower and returned to her dorm a little more at ease than before. As Indy brushed through her wet hair, she thought of the conversation she wasn't supposed to hear. She couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that she might have more to do with the boys' investigation than she thought. She tried to shrug it off. There were a few hundred thousand people living in Fort Wayne, so this must surely be a freaky accident. And then there was Ares... She thought they might become friends or something over time, but she should stay away from him now. It had been her plan to keep to herself only a week ago, but he was so different, so special... and so dangerous. She shook her head, but she failed to shake him from her mind. What was happening to her, and why?
Indy's shift at the diner wouldn't start for another two hours, but she decided to pack her bag and leave early with the intention of avoiding Ares. She was sure seeing him right now would blow her entire cover.
"Where were you yesterday?"
Indy froze as she heard his deep, cold voice from behind her. She took a moment to lock the door and calm herself down, before turning around to face him.
"Good morning, dear neighbor. I slept just fine. How about you?" she tried to brush him off and walk past him, but he quickly put his hand against the door, next to her head, effectively keeping her in place. His proximity knocked the air right out of Indy's lungs. He furrowed his brows and his body was dangerously close to hers.
"You weren't at the library," Ares stated with narrowed eyes. Shoot. How did he even know that? Unless... He had come to work on their assignment? Indy could hardly imagine, but how else would he know she wasn't where she said she'd be? Did he see through her that easily?
"Something came up," she simply said. It wasn't really a lie.
"And since when are we on speaking terms?" She raised an eyebrow at him.
Ares leaned in closer to her, his voice threatening as he ignored her question.
"Where were you last night?"
Indy stood up straight, her chest now brushing against his. She looked back at him, trying her best not to blush or seem the nervous mess she actually was. It took her all of her confidence, but she couldn't let him intimidate her. Or seduce her. Or whatever it was he was doing right now.
"I'd say that's none of your business." She tried to keep her tone measured and cold, like his. Two could play this game. Let's see who cracks first.
Ares just stared at her, a suspicious look in his eyes. She didn't seem to affect him like she had the other day when he had just returned from the shower. Maybe she had overestimated her powers.
"You were here, weren't you?" Ares guessed correctly.
He put his other hand on the door as well, trapping her between his arms. Indy felt the heat rise to her cheeks. His face was now very close to hers, and though she found it partly exciting, it was mostly terrifying. She had to think of something to get her out of this situation. She did not want to be on this guy's suspect list.
She cleared her throat.
"If you really must know, I spent the night at Coop's. If you want the details, you should ask him."
It was the best she could think of. There was no way Ares would go to Cooper and ask him about her, so Indy was actually kind of satisfied with her quick lie.
Fire lit up in Ares' eyes. He was furious, and she almost took back her words. But she couldn't, and she shouldn't.
"You're making me late for work, Ares." Another lie. But she was afraid her traitorous body might lean into him just a little more and she couldn't have that.
No reply, just a death glare. She maintained eye contact with him, refusing to let him win this little staring competition. Suddenly, Ares slammed on the door with his hand, making her flinch. Without giving her another look, he rushed off down the other end of the hallway. Indy was beginning to see he had some serious problems. No s**t.
