CHAPTER 5:"THE ROAD HOME?"

338 Words
The moment Ethan hit the pavement, he gasped, gulping in deep breaths of fresh air. His hands pressed against the cold asphalt as the morning sun warmed his back. They had made it. A few feet away, Noah coughed, rolling onto his side. Felix, Diane, Lillian, and Ava stumbled onto the road, their faces pale and eyes wide. The portal behind them had vanished, leaving nothing but empty space. The silence was deafening. No whispers. No howling. No creatures. For the first time in what felt like forever, there was only stillness. Ethan pushed himself up, his legs shaky. The road stretched ahead of them, cracked but real, leading into the distance. A gas station stood at the intersection, its neon “Open 24 Hours” sign flickering. Behind it, telephone poles lined the horizon. Diane exhaled shakily. "Is this… really it?" Felix spun in a slow circle, his expression unreadable. "I think we did it." Noah let out a short, breathless laugh, running a hand through his hair. "Holy s**t. We’re back." For a moment, hope filled the air. Then a truck rumbled down the road toward them. A man leaned out of the window, squinting against the sun. "You folks okay?" Ethan opened his mouth to respond, but something caught his eye. A signpost by the road. It looked just like the one in Black Hollow—the same wood, the same lettering, the same eerie, unnatural newness, as if it had just been placed there. His blood ran cold. Felix followed his gaze, his voice barely a whisper. "No… it can’t be…" Lillian took a step back, shaking her head. "Please, no. Not again." Ava’s eyes filled with tears as she read the words out loud: WELCOME TO FAIRMONT – Population: Growing. A heavy silence settled over them. The wind whistled through the trees, carrying an all-too-familiar distant laughter. Ethan turned toward the others, his hands trembling. "Run." The laughter grew louder. The cycle had not ended. It had only begun again. --- THE END.
