Chapter Three

1166 Words
Samantha's breath still hadn't returned to normal, and the weight of the moment pressed down on her like a lead blanket. She stood frozen, the shattered glass vase at her feet, pieces glinting under the soft glow of the penthouse lights. Derek's intense gaze didn't leave her, a silent storm brewing behind his steely eyes. "What was that?" she asked, her voice barely steady. "Who were they?" Derek didn't respond immediately. He grabbed the phone from his pocket and made a quick call. His voice was low, controlled. "Two men, neutralized. Clean it up." When he hung up, he finally turned to her. "They were hired. Someone wants you out of the way." Samantha felt a surge of disbelief. "Me? I’m nobody in your world. I don’t even know what this is all about!" Derek stepped closer, his tall frame looming over her. "You’re not nobody anymore. You’re a liability. You were seen with me, and now they’ll target you to get to me." Her heart raced as his words sank in. This wasn’t just about business, not anymore. She was in danger simply because she’d crossed paths with him. "I need answers, Derek. Who’s behind this? Why are they trying to kill you?" He looked away, his jaw tightening. For a moment, he seemed to wrestle with whether to tell her the truth, but then his icy facade dropped. "The merger I mentioned—it’s with an energy conglomerate. But it’s not just about money. It’s about control over one of the most powerful industries in the world. There are people—dangerous people—who don't want me in that position. They think if they take me out, they can keep their control intact." Samantha processed the information, a pit forming in her stomach. "So this is about power. Greed." Derek's eyes met hers, colder now. "It always is." Before she could ask another question, the door to the penthouse opened again, this time revealing a man in a tailored suit. He moved with military precision, his eyes scanning the room before landing on Derek. "Sir, the cleanup team is on its way. Everything will be taken care of." "Good," Derek replied. "Double security. No one gets in or out without my say." The man nodded and left as quickly as he’d arrived. Samantha’s head spun. This wasn’t just about business deals. This was a warzone, one where people died to protect secrets and money. She had no idea what kind of power Derek truly wielded, but it was far beyond anything she’d imagined. And she was trapped in the middle of it. "Why not just walk away?" she asked suddenly, surprising even herself with the question. "Why fight for this merger if it’s costing you your life?" Derek’s gaze darkened. "You think I can just walk away? They won’t stop if I do. I’ve crossed a line, Samantha. This fight doesn’t end because I want it to." The weight of his words settled heavily between them. For the first time, she saw the toll this was taking on him. Beneath the ruthless, calculating exterior was a man fighting for survival in a world that didn’t play by the rules. And now, by some twisted fate, she was bound to him. "I should leave," Samantha said, the words barely out before she questioned if she could actually follow through. "You can’t," Derek said simply. "They’ll track you down, and you won’t survive out there on your own. Not after tonight." Her frustration flared. "So what? You expect me to stay here, lock myself away like some prisoner, while you fight your battles?" "You’re not a prisoner," Derek replied, his voice edged with warning. "But if you walk out of here, you’ll be dead by morning." Samantha’s anger mixed with fear. She wanted to push back, to fight for her freedom, but deep down, she knew he was right. She had no idea who was after him—or her now—and she couldn’t outrun people who could orchestrate professional hits. Her phone buzzed on the coffee table, snapping her out of her spiraling thoughts. It was a text from her assistant, Kayla. Samantha, where are you? I’ve been trying to reach you all night. Are you okay? She stared at the screen, her heart twisting. She wanted to tell Kayla everything, to explain why she’d disappeared. But how could she, when she barely understood it herself? "Your life out there… it’s over for now," Derek said, as if reading her thoughts. "You need to focus on staying alive, not on what you’re leaving behind." His cold detachment infuriated her. "Is this how you live your life, Derek? Always running, always looking over your shoulder?" "I survive," he replied, his voice unwavering. "That’s all that matters." Samantha shook her head, frustration rising. "I don’t want to just survive. I want my life back. My business, my freedom." Derek moved closer, his eyes locking onto hers. "This is the price you pay when you step into my world. Everything has a cost." She could feel the tension between them, electric and unnerving. For a moment, she almost forgot the danger outside as something shifted between them—an unspoken connection that was as dangerous as the enemies closing in around them. But before the moment could go any further, Derek’s phone rang. He answered it immediately, his expression hardening as he listened to whoever was on the other end. "I understand," he said, his voice clipped. "I’ll handle it." He hung up and turned to her, his expression grim. "We have a problem." Samantha’s heart sank. "What now?" "The man who led the attack tonight—he wasn’t just hired muscle. He’s someone I’ve dealt with before. Someone I trusted." The air in the room seemed to thicken with the weight of his words. Betrayal. Samantha felt a chill run down her spine. "Someone you know is trying to kill you?" "Someone I thought was loyal." Derek’s voice was tight with controlled rage. "This changes everything." Samantha’s mind raced. If Derek couldn’t even trust the people closest to him, what chance did she have? She was caught in the middle of a deadly game, one where loyalty was just another bargaining chip, and betrayal was inevitable. And as much as she wanted to walk away, she couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever was coming next would be even more dangerous than anything they’d faced so far. Derek turned toward the window, staring out into the city below. His voice, when he spoke, was low and filled with a quiet fury. "Whoever betrayed me will pay. And when I find them, they won’t live long enough to regret it." Samantha watched him, her heart pounding. The line between ally and enemy had never felt thinner. And in that moment, she knew—there was no turning back now. Not for her, and not for Derek. Their fates were intertwined. And the stakes had just become deadly.
