The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Dominic moved so fast to stand my nerves went on end and I threw myself backward into a back hand spring as he stood hastily. Thank goodness for all those years of exhausting hand-to-hand training, I was able to smoothly land and round off in a fight-ready stance facing the newcomer.
"Well that was rude," I grumbled, c*****g my hip to the side and parking my hand on it to show my disapproval. Dominic however, didn't notice one bit. Reaching for my drink off the side table, I gulped the rest down irritated.
Grinding my teeth together, I watched Dominic walk into the shadow and heard the loud smacking of backs as the two men did that weird bro hug, back slap thing that men do. Simultaneously, Dominic and the newcomer, who I assumed was the infamous Gabriel walked out of the shadows and directly toward me.
"Gabriel this is my girl Ty'an," Dominic said extending his hand in my direction stopping a foot or so in front of me.
I looked up and up and up as if I was looking up a thousand-year-old Redwood Tree. Dominic was tall but Gabriel towered over him, which made me suddenly feel small. I was short for a fae, but I wasn't that short! This man was just an otherworldly giant. My irritation faded into intrigue. And my gosh, he was gorgeous, even with a scar marring the entire left side of his face. It made his sexy, rough rogue appearance even sexier. Wearing simple black combat boots, BDU pants and a t-shirt did nothing but accentuate the danger that he embodied. Like a beautifully ordained Katana on display, I knew instinctively he was pretty until unleashed. I could sense it.
Gabriel gazed down at me, not saying a word, everything about this man was dark, dangerous and downright sexy. My nerves were still on end tingling with excitement. This predator was staring down on me and the predator in me was intrigued. Looking up into his dark eyes, a slight sexy smile slowly made its way across my face. I knew it reached my eyes and the sapphire hues were twinkling as I felt my canines elongate, adding to my wicked grin.
"I must say it is nice to finally meet you. I was starting to think you were a ghost the way Dominic speaks of you," my speech pattern changed as my canines remained elongated, every S accentuated to a hiss. Damn, this was not normal for me. Usually I only had this response during fights and s*x, pure adrenaline situations.
The air around us was so thick you could cut it with a knife as everyone around us watched and waited. I now understood why there were bets being placed on this meeting. We were the two most Alpha Predators present. Though Fae culture didn't recognize Alpha, Omega, Luna positions like the shape shifters did it was the best way to describe the current situation. While I wasn't royalty exactly, I was a high Fae by birth, only second to the Royal family. Gabriel was obviously a powerful Alpha, which intrigued me. Which was his pack? Why was he joining a group of misfits instead of going home to his Luna?
"Hmmm a Fae. Wasn't expecting that. Hello Ty'an," Gabriel's voice was gruff and harsh, but a half grin made its way across his handsome face as his eyes twinkled with their own curiosity. There would be no fight between us, we recognized the predator in each other, but instead of feeling challenged, we were both intrigued.
After a few moments of simply staring at each other, someone nearby cleared
their throat. As if we had danced a thousand dances together, Gabriel and I simultaneously turned our heads to stare at Dominic. He looked uncomfortable under our gazes, rocking toe to heel before speaking.
"Well, shall we get another drink, the three of us?" he suggested.
Gabriel swiveled his head back in my direction, c*****g it to the side like a puppy examining a new toy. I carefully watched the action, moving my eyes only to him.
"I think I'd better go say my hello's to the rest of the group, I'll circle back around later." Gabriel responded. "Taigan, I look forward to our next meeting. It should be... perplexing." with that he stalked away to where Tyler and Molly were seated.
Dominic let out a breath I hadn't realized he had been holding. I moved my attention fully back to him for the briefest of moments. A smart predator never turns her back fully on another predator.
"I like him, I like him a lot. Does he blade dance?" I asked. Not concerned about hurting Dominic's feelings, revealing my interest in the newcomer. He knew as well as anyone else that Fae were fickle and liked new shiny toys. Or deadly ones in my case.
"Really, you guys didn't instantly try to murder one another on meeting so you want to invite trouble." Dominic laughed, "Yes, he does utilize blades in his training. However, if you ask him to blade dance he may laugh at you. That's such a Fae thing. I need another drink and to collect my winnings."
I heard more than saw Dominic walk away toward the house, my attention had once again returned to watching Grim. Resuming my original seat in the chair by the fire.
As I watched Molly jump up and dive into his arms, an audible hiss left my throat. I shot to my feet in an instant. Molly was oblivious to my movements but Gabriel had caught the entire performance. A surprising grin snuck up his face, he untangled Molly and set her back on her own two feet, turning his attention back to her momentarily.
"s**t, I think I need another drink too." grabbing my empty cup from the side table, I turned, stalking to the house. A complexity of emotions I didn't understand washed through me.
Why the f**k was I acting this way?
