Stepping out into the bright sunlight the next morning, the air felt crisp and smelled of ozone. I loved living in the mountains. There was always something soothing to me about it. My work took me all over the world to different continents and all that it entailed. There was nowhere that I felt as at peace as in these mountains.
Walking from the apartment toward the path that ran down the hillside into town, I passed Dominic's little sister Kira. She was small and pixie-like with a pointed nose and hazel eyes. Always in a good mood, she skipped up the path toward me, "Good Morning Taigan!" she winked at me and skipped on past. She always struck me as an odd little Were. While her brother was a born alpha, she was anything but an alpha, while she was loved and protected by the clan, she was quite possibly one of the lowest ranking female Omegas. That somehow never seemed to bother her though.
I smiled as she passed me and continued down the path. It was a rare day where I had no assignments and no courses to complete. Dominic was meeting with his father. Those meetings I was never privie too as they were clan business. Today was my day, I was free to ride to my heart's content. My horses were my solitude, they gave me wings when I had none and the ability to see the world through another's eyes like the Were's could with their wolves. Well as close to that relationship as I would ever be able to achieve anyway.
The barn was quiet as I entered, just the muffled sounds of the horses munching on what remained of their breakfast. My beloved stallion was at the end of the row to the right. Silver was simply stunning if you asked me. Though I may be biased, having bred and raised him. He was small only 14hds in height but his dapple grey coat was unique, it never faded no matter what season we were in. He had human like brown eyes, with a matching white mane and tail that reached the ground, an abundance of feathers adorned his front and back legs.
Hearing me approach he popped his head up over the stall door still chewing his hay. Nickering a welcome at me quietly.
"Hey Silver, ready to get lost for a few hours?" I asked.
We spent the next hour losing ourselves in the sounds and smells of the local forest. The stallion was always up for trailblazing, taking us wherever his feet went. We eventually ended up in the clearing where the hunter faction often met for sparing and to have meetings away from the prying eyes of the locals.
As we stepped into the clearing, Silver stopped, ears erect and eyes watchful. In the center of the clearing, Dominic and Gabriel were engaged in a hand-to-hand sparing match. At least I hoped they were sparing, the look on both their faces was determined and lethal.
Urging Silver forward, I stopped him 10 feet or so from where the two Weres were locked in a strong arm grapple. Neither noticed us. I dismounted and ground tied Silver patting him affectionately on the neck before approaching.
"Am I interrupting?" I asked in a sing-song voice as I approached. Giving the two dominant men ample warning that I was there.
Both men turned to look at me with a slightly stunned look, relaxing their holds but neither yielding and releasing their opponent.
"If I am, please don't let me stop you. I find this quite interesting." I stopped two feet from where they were curled on the ground c*****g my hip and crossing my arms, raising an eyebrow. "So does Silver." I added nodding over my shoulder at the stallion.
Both men slowly looked around me to peer at the horse, then looked back up at me with looks I couldn't quite distinguish. Slowly the both released each other standing and brushing themselves off.
"We will finish this ... discussion later my friend." Gabriel gruffly said to Dominic before turning toward the treeline and stalking away without another word.
"Well that was rude," I exclaimed watching his large figure shift into a large black wolf and loping into the trees. Turning my gaze in Dominic's direction, I asked, "what was all that about? I thought you were meeting with your father this morning?"
Running his hand through his hair as he often did when he was thinking, Dominic took a deep breath and growled low. I waited for him to respond. I was used to his growls and snarls and all other matters of wolfie noises he made. They may alarm most Fae but when you had lived with a Were for the better part of 6 years, they were easy enough to interpret. He was frustrated and irritated.
"That was clan business and is none of your concern," he snapped at me, brushing his pants off further, then cracking his neck left and then right. I stood my ground just watching him. Waiting for his temper to recede. Dominic was not known for his cool-headed demeanor. On more than one occasion, I had to intercede when he nearly took a situation too far with the wrong species.
There were laws for a reason. Weres could handle Were business between the clans, they were in charge of hunting down the dark Fae. The Fae were in charge of Fae business amongst the courts and hunting Rogue Weres. The humans Humans were not to be hunted, hurt or preyed on by either of the races. Humans handled their own business and they oversaw that the Weres and Fae abided by the species laws. While Weres and Fae were stronger in many ways, the humans outnumbered both species 100 to 1 easily.
For all his bark and bite he had never once overstepped with me. Turning to his actual physical anger, my direction was not who he was. He loved me and knew I was the one person who saw and loved both the best and worst parts of him. He made sharp comments like this on occasion, but I never took them to heart. Simply waiting him out.
After a few more moments of strained silence Dominic took a deep sigh and looked at me, his eyes still reflecting his wolf but far calmer than they had been moments before.
"Sorry love, I didn't mean to snap at you. Yes, it is clan business but I don't get the feeling you interrupted on purpose. The fates intervened, putting you in the right place at the right time. I guess it wouldn't serve their purpose for Gabriel and I to take each other out."
I relaxed, dropping my arms to my side, "Why do I have the feeling your not going to elaborate more than that statement."
"Because I'm not. Its Clan business like I said. Between Gabriel, me and our fathers," Dominic responded, his voice calm but firm.
Interesting, this was the first time Dominic had mentioned that Gabriel had family within the Clan. He had never explained how the 'Ghost' as I had learned he was referred to, fit into his world or how they knew one another.
"Well, that's all fine and dandy but I personally like you both living, so how about the two of you sorting out whatever the issue is with your words and not your fists," I suggested sassily. Sauntering up to Dominic, I leaned my body against his and slid my fingers into his hair. Looking up at him with what I knew was an inviting grin on my face, I added, "I particularly like you living and fully intact. I have needs that you and this incredible body of yours need to take care of."
A slow lustful smirk crossed his handsome features as he looked down at me. Sliding his hands onto my ass, he lifted me to straddle his torso and claimed my mouth with his. A deep needy growl sounded from his throat. Pulling back slightly he growled out, "Tease."
Turning and leaning down, he moved us hastily to the ground, laying me on my back and settling himself between my knees. He loomed over me, never breaking contact as we tasted each other greedily. When he broke from my mouth and began kissing my neck, I arched my back, grinding against him.
"Teasing you always grants me the most glorious rewards." my s's slurred as my canines had elongated with my arousal. Lost in the ecstasy of the moment, I pushed all my questions about Gabriel and Dominic's odd behavior away to sort out at a later time. Right now, I had needs and none of the politics mattered.
