Gabriel just stared at her. Gawked would be a more apt description actually. He couldn't have heard her correctly, he thought she had said she was Dark Fae Royalty. Which was impossible. He had killed the Dark Fae King and Queen himself, 8 years ago. He had stood over their decaying bodies.
"I'm sorry, come again? You are what now?" he finally stuttered out. f**k all, he probably sounded like a moron, but his brain was still attempting to make squeaky wheels turn and comprehend what he had heard.
He watched her carefully as she folded to a sitting position in front of the hearth, staring into the flames.
"I am the last of the Dark Fae Royal line, Gabriel. I've been in hiding since my parents' deaths 8 years ago."
The words were quiet but confident, "There is this pre-preconceived notion in today's civilization that all Dark Fae are evil simply because we are different. Our powers are darker. When fully activated, we require Fae or Were blood to survive. We are just different, but that doesn't make us all evil."
There was a whole basket of things to unload in those statements. Required Fae or Were blood to survive? He hadn't known that. Why had she said she killed her parents? He knew that was a lie. He had been there and he had not seen her or she wouldn't be here today.
"You said you killed your parents? What makes you say that," he asked. Not ready to reveal his truth just yet.
She fidgeted under the weight of his question, ringing her hands together and looking between them and the flames in front of her.
"We were being hunted, the hunters got too close and, in order to save my brother and I, my parents sacrificed themselves. I drained every drop of their blood to manifest enough power to get Sly and I out of the Dark Court. I was so young, I couldn't do it without their lifeblood."
He watched as tears silently rolled down her cheeks. She truly believed she was responsible for their deaths. He should tell her, but he couldn't bring himself to expose himself. He didn't trust her, he couldn't hurt her because she was his mate, but that didn't stop her from being able to hurt or even kill him. No, this was a secret he would keep.
"Wait, isn't your brother the Light Fae Queens consort? Why would she let a Dark Fae into her court, or into her bed for f***s sake?"
"I told you, we aren't all evil. The Dark Fae who caused our stigma are just, lost. They have wild and radical ideologies. They do not represent the entirety of the Dark Fae. Unfortunately, the damage they have inflicted over the past 100 years has surpassed the relationships of the past. There was a time when Dark and Light Fae lived side by side. My brother and the queen are Twin Flames, sort of like your Mate bonds, only deeper. Twin Flames are," she paused, thinking, "the other half of your soul. The death of one results in the death of the other. That fact alone makes it impossible for the Queen to reveal what her relationship with Sly is. She bound both of our powers when we came to the Light realm. That's why we have both been able to hide in plain sight."
She looked over her shoulder at him, a strange look on her face. "If I'm your mate that means you are my Twin Flame. I've never heard of that bond outside of between Fae. I don't know what the repercussions for us will be."
They sat in silence for several minutes, both digesting all the new information. Mate, Twin Flame, tied together by fate for life, there was no escaping the other. By all intents and purposes, his mate was also his deepest enemy. His training had all been focused on irradicating the Dark Fae, especially the Royal family. Now he was questioning every bit of that training, Ty'an was not what he expected of a Dark Fae. She was softer, kinder. Sure there was a storm brewing in her eyes at every moment, but in the short period of time he had been around her he hadn't seen her try to kill, maim, harm or torture a single person. Including him when he had attacked her. She had defended herself, but she hadn't escalated it any further than that.
"You said the Queen had bound your powers. Why do you have access to them now then?" he finally asked, it was only one of a dozen questions rolling around in his brain.
Sighing, Ty'an stood slowly. She came to the table to sit across from him. She looked tired and her skin had a strange pale color too it he hadn't noticed before.
"The Queen unbound my powers. She thinks it's time that I reclaim the Dark Court so that we can put all this insanity to rest. Her hope is that once I succeed in assuming the throne, we can combine the courts and stop all the death and destruction. Only females are heirs of succession in the Fae world, so she needs me in the Dark Court before she can reveal who Sly is and that he is her Twin Flame. Then, through the relative ties, she aims to combine them. I hope she is right, I hope that she can protect my brother, and I hope we can stop the purgatory of the Dark Fae."
"And Zeke? What's that all about?" he inquired. At the mention of the Faes' name she visibly tensed and a flash of anger crossed her face.
"Zeke, is power-hungry and deceitful. He wants to force me into marriage so he can be the Queen's consort and attempt to control the Dark Court through that position. He has quite a following and very radical ideas for the Faes' future. If he had it his way, all Fae, Weres and Humans would answer to the Dark Court."
"So why didn't you let me take him out when I had the chance if he is such a problem?" he asked irritated.
"According to the Queen's connections, he has something in the works. Something that could drastically change the dynamics of our society and he isn't stupid enough not to have a back-up plan in the case of his demise. His cronies would still follow his orders after death. With him alive, I can get the information I need directly from the source to stop it." she tilted her head oddly, like a dog listening to a noise.
"And exactly how do you plan to do that, Princess?" he asked, challenge in his tone.
"By taking my throne," a sparkle of danger glinted in her eyes as a sly grin crossed her face "and tricking Zeke into thinking he is getting exactly what he wants before I drain every ounce of his life blood."
