Chapter 13: The Silent Omen

490 Words
Night lingered over Moonvale. The wind carried an unfamiliar chill through the Silver Forest. Orion moved without making a sound. His silver cloak swayed gently behind him as he followed the narrow path leading toward Moonvale. Normally, the forest was alive. Owls hunted beneath the moonlight. Crickets filled the silence. Leaves whispered with every passing breeze. Tonight... Nothing. The silence was unnatural. Orion stopped. His silver eyes slowly scanned the trees. "..." He knelt beside the ground. Fresh footprints. Not human. Not beast. They appeared for only a few steps... Then vanished completely. As though whatever made them had ceased to exist. Orion frowned. "Impossible." He reached toward one of the prints. The moment his fingers touched it— It dissolved into countless particles of light. His expression darkened. "A temporal fracture..." The words barely escaped his lips. Then he continued toward Moonvale. --- Meanwhile... Cassian finally arrived at the city gates. The guards greeted him with relieved smiles. "Cassian!" "You've returned!" He forced a smile. "I was delayed." His thoughts remained fixed on the Messenger. "You really know nothing." The words echoed inside his head again. Before entering the city, Cassian glanced back toward the distant Moon Temple. Only darkness remained. "...Lyra." He whispered her name before continuing inside. --- Back at the Sanctuary... Lyra remained standing before the Mirror Chamber. The little girl's voice refused to leave her mind. "You're too late." Too late... Too late for what? She stepped closer to the broken mirror. Its surface reflected only her face now. Nothing else. An elderly Guardian approached quietly. "You should rest." Lyra didn't move. "Has anyone..." She hesitated. "...ever seen a little girl inside the Mirror?" The old Guardian's footsteps stopped. For a brief moment... His expression changed. Fear. It disappeared almost instantly. "I have served the Sanctuary for sixty-three years." "I have never seen such a thing." Lyra slowly lowered her head. "...I see." The old Guardian turned to leave. Then... Almost too quietly to hear... He whispered to himself, "So why now...?" Lyra looked up. "What did you say?" The Guardian smiled gently. "I said..." "You should get some rest." But his eyes... Told a different story. --- Far beneath the Moon Temple... Water dripped from ancient stone. The enormous chains surrounding the endless darkness remained silent. Until... A tiny crack spread across one of the links. Barely visible. Barely audible. Yet somewhere far away... Orion suddenly stopped walking. His eyes narrowed. "..." He slowly looked toward the direction of the Moon Temple. He couldn't explain it. But for the first time in years... His heartbeat had become uneven. Only one thought crossed his mind. "The seal..." Before he could finish— A crow burst from the trees. Then another. Then hundreds. The entire forest erupted into flight. Orion stared silently as they disappeared into the night sky. "...It's beginning." Without another word... He broke into a run. Straight toward Moonvale. --- To Be Continued...
