Chapter 16: The Echo That Remained

423 Words
Morning settled gently over the Sanctuary of the Wraith Guardians. Yet peace had become an illusion. Lyra stood alone in the Hall of Records. Towering shelves stretched endlessly around her, filled with books older than kingdoms themselves. If answers existed... They would be here. An elderly librarian approached quietly. "You have been standing before the same shelf for nearly an hour." Lyra smiled awkwardly. "I don't even know what I'm looking for." The old Guardian's eyes softened. "Sometimes..." "The answer finds the one searching." He reached toward a weathered book hidden behind several others. Dust danced through the air as he placed it in Lyra's hands. Its cover bore no title. Only a single symbol. A clock surrounded by twelve wings. "What is this?" The old Guardian hesitated. "I have never been permitted to read it." "It chooses its reader." Lyra frowned. "Books don't choose people." The old man simply smiled. "Open it." She did. The first page was blank. The second... Blank. Every page... Blank. Lyra sighed. "I think your magical book is broken." The librarian looked over her shoulder. His eyes widened. "What..." He slowly reached for the pages. Every page was covered with writing. Thousands of words. Ancient illustrations. Entire histories. Lyra stared at him. "I don't see anything." "And I see everything." Silence filled the hall. The old Guardian slowly stepped back. His voice barely rose above a whisper. "It has begun." Before Lyra could ask what he meant... A single sentence slowly appeared across the empty page. Written in shimmering silver ink. The one who rewrites time cannot read the history she erased. Lyra's heart stopped. "What does that mean...?" The words faded. The pages became blank once more. --- Far away... Orion finally emerged from the Silver Forest. But what stood before him... Was not Moonvale. He looked across the valley in disbelief. An enormous stone fortress rose against the horizon. Its black banners fluttered in the wind. He knew this place. Or rather... He remembered destroying it. "...Fortress Noctis." It had fallen over two hundred years ago. Yet it stood before him as though history had never changed. Orion whispered one sentence. "The fractures..." "They're no longer rewriting the past." "They're colliding with it." --- Deep beneath the Moon Temple... The Sleeping Darkness opened its eyes. Not in anger. Not in triumph. But in recognition. It spoke its first words in a thousand years. "...She remembers." The chamber trembled. Not because of the Darkness... But because something else... Had heard those words. --- To Be Continued...
