Chapter 2

The fact that she had developed a tumor in her brain was something she had originally never planned to tell Dorian. The day before their wedding anniversary, she had just found out she was pregnant. She had wanted to surprise him with the news. But the doctor immediately shattered her joy, saying that the malignant tumor in her brain could rupture at any moment. And now, she was already three months pregnant. If the tumor was not removed soon, she might die on the operating table while giving birth. The doctor advised her to terminate the pregnancy. Yet the obstetrician also informed her that her uterus was slightly malformed, and this could very well be the only child she would ever have in her lifetime. Caught between two impossible choices, she chose the baby. It was a child born from her love with Dorian. She had finally conceived after so much difficulty...of course, she could not bear to give it up. Until she witnessed that scene just moments ago. How laughable. While she was risking everything to protect the child born from their love, he was in bed with another woman. And that woman was the clumsy housekeeper they had previously dismissed. After showering, Dorian walked over again, intending to speak calmly with Arabella. "Why Evelina?" The sudden question caught him off guard for a moment. Arabella’s voice was hoarse. "You were the one who disliked her the most in the beginning, weren’t you?" Dorian furrowed his brows and let out a soft sigh. Arabella looked at the honorary banners hanging in the study, her throat tightening painfully. He truly had exceptional medical ethics. Whenever he encountered an elderly person drowning, he would immediately perform CPR. He once cleaned up a high school student who had lost bladder control after suffering a nervous breakdown during college entrance exams. Even though he could not swim, he still jumped into a river without hesitation to save a patient. There had even been a patient with severe dissociative identity disorder who had nearly killed him during treatment, yet he still insisted on continuing the therapy. That time, Arabella had bandaged the s***h wound on his wrist while crying heartbreakingly, calling him foolish. But he had calmly replied, "I’m a doctor. Saving people is my calling. When instinct takes over, no one can stop me." Back then, the reason Arabella fell in love with him was precisely because of the kindness and integrity hidden beneath his cold exterior. But he was an authoritative psychologist. There were clearly hundreds of ways he could have helped Evelina. Yet he had deliberately chosen the most intimate and degrading method possible, the one that disgusted her the most. She remembered when Evelina had worked as a housekeeper in their home. She always kept her head lowered while speaking and constantly made clumsy mistakes. Every time Dorian saw her, he would frown. More than once, he had asked Arabella to dismiss her. Later, when bruises from domestic abuse appeared on Evelina’s body, he had only coldly told her, "Don’t bring your personal affairs into work." Yet hidden in his gaze was a trace of pity. That kind of emotion was rare for him when dealing with others. When Evelina voluntarily resigned, Arabella had offered to help her find a lawyer, but Evelina refused. "Mrs. Arabella, you can’t help me with my situation," Evelina had said despairingly at the time. "I’m destined to rot in the mud for the rest of my life." Arabella had softened with sympathy and secretly helped her financially several times. She had also advised Evelina to divorce Gideon as soon as possible. But Evelina always hesitated and dragged things out without resolving them. Who would have thought that the problem Arabella could not solve would be handled by Dorian instead...and handled all the way into bed. What bitter irony. The phone rang. The moment Dorian saw Evelina’s name on the screen, his expression subtly changed. He answered the call, his voice instantly turning gentle. "Did you get home safely? How are you feeling? Are you still uncomfortable?" As Arabella stared at his back, the pain in her chest became so intense she could barely breathe. Dorian had lied. After ten years together, she had long learned to read every subtle expression he made. Their intimacy had always felt like a routine obligation. His expression during those moments was always indifferent. Whenever she tried to seduce him, he would calmly reject her. "I’ve been too tired lately. Be patient and take care of it yourself first." He had even quoted psychological theories from her, claiming that frequent s****l cravings were a form of disorder. If she continued pestering him, he said he would have to conduct psychological intervention on her. Arabella had felt deeply wronged and could only endure it silently. Even then, she kept convincing herself that Dorian was already one in a million, and that some things simply required time. But the passion and intoxication he displayed in bed with Evelina was something she had never once seen between the two of them. He was clearly addicted to Evelina’s body, yet he refused to admit it, hiding behind the excuse of medical treatment to justify himself. Arabella murmured bitterly in her heart, "Dorian, you’re filthy now. I don’t want you anymore." By the time she sent the divorce request to her lawyer, it was already late at night. On what should have been a happy wedding anniversary, she was instead drafting divorce papers. How absurd. After bathing, the unfamiliar fragrance on Dorian's body had faded away. But the kiss marks on his neck could not be washed off. He noticed her gaze and instinctively covered them before quietly watching Arabella for several seconds, his tone gentle. "I won’t use such an extreme method to treat her anymore. Don’t sleep with emotions weighing on you. Close your eyes and count sheep." Arabella did not answer. The intimate and piercing images of the two of them still lingered relentlessly in her mind. Dorian's patience seemed to run thin, and his voice became colder. "If you’re uncomfortable, let’s sleep in separate rooms tonight. I still need to work on a research paper anyway." He softly closed the bedroom door behind him, leaving the room so silent that even breathing felt inaudible. It was past two in the morning when the sharp sound of Dorian's phone suddenly rang from the next room. He quickly muttered something before grabbing his coat and rushing out of the house without offering a single explanation. Arabella’s heart tightened instantly. She hurriedly got dressed and chased after him. Her car followed his all the way to the apartment building where Evelina lived. She watched Dorian rush upstairs and come back down carrying Evelina in his arms, completely unaware of her presence. Evelina’s blood stained his pure white coat, yet he seemed to have forgotten his obsession with cleanliness as he carried her straight into the hospital. The people around them instinctively stepped aside to clear a path. Evelina had slit her wrists and urgently needed emergency surgery, but the operation required a family member’s signature. Dorian snatched the consent form and declared firmly, "I’m her husband!"
