The air between us thickens, his hands are still on my waist, his breath uneven against my cheek, his control hanging by a thread. “Rhett,” I whisper. He doesn’t answer. His jaw is tight. His eyes are darker than I’ve ever seen them, not angry, not cruel, just overwhelmed. Like something inside him is fighting to the surface.
