Chapter 10: The Leaving

405 Words
Chapter: The Leaving The sun rose slowly, casting long shadows over the island’s drenched earth. Vanna sat alone on the weathered bench near the docks, damp from the storm, arms wrapped around herself — not from cold, but from the weight of it all finally lifting. Dan was gone. He had taken the speedboat out before dawn, after one last failed attempt to justify the silence he’d wrapped her in for months. She didn’t cry. She didn’t scream. She just let him leave. There was nothing left to give him. No questions. No anger. No hope. Gavin hadn’t come. Not after what he saw. Not after what he thought he saw. And maybe that was just as well. She had come here with a quiet hope that she could find clarity — maybe even redemption. But what she found instead was truth, sharp and unyielding. A truth that hurt, yes, but also freed her. She watched the sky brighten, clouds parting like curtains drawn back on the final act. The estate loomed in the distance — silent now. A place that had once echoed with laughter, stolen glances, almost-love. Now it held only ghosts. She didn’t belong here. Not anymore. Maybe not ever. The boatman waved. “Ma’am? We’re ready.” She stood. There was no cinematic swell of music. No footsteps running down the hill. No last-minute confessions or apologies. Just the steady lapping of waves against the dock, and the sound of her own heart, finally quiet. She boarded the boat and took her seat near the back. As the engine hummed to life, she allowed herself one last glance at the island. The sun hit the estate’s upper windows, turning them to gold. Somewhere in that house, Gavin might still be watching. Or maybe he wasn’t. Either way, she wouldn’t be waiting anymore. She turned away from the island as it grew smaller behind her — a beautiful lie dissolving in the sea mist — and faced forward. Ahead was home. Not a place, but a feeling she was finally ready to find again. And this time, she would write the ending herself. Would you like the next chapter to pick up with Gavin's POV — maybe realizing what he's lost only after she's truly gone? Or would you prefer a time jump to show where Vanna lands next, emotionally or physically? Let me know the direction, and I’ll continue from there.
