THE BLOODBOUND LEGACY CHAPTER 3

Chapter 3: The Echo of Two Souls The silence following a collapsed ceiling was a physical weight, thick with settling dust and the sharp, coppery smell of ozone. Lyra woke with a gasp, her lungs burning as she sucked in a mouthful of dirt-choked air. Her shoulder throbbed with a dull, sickening ache, and every muscle in her frame felt as if it had been stretched to the point of snapping. "Don't move," a low voice commanded from the gloom. Lyra flinched, scrambling backward until her spine hit a cold, jagged slab of stone. Her hand flew to her neck, where two tiny, tender punctures throbbed beneath her collar. "You... you bit me." "I saved your life. And you saved mine, however clumsily," Julian replied coldly. He was sitting on a fallen stone pillar a few feet away, wiping a smear of dark blood from his lower lip with the back of his hand. In the dim glow of the lingering embers, he looked less like a monster and more like a statue carved from alabaster—sharp-jawed, pristine, and terrifyingly composed. Yet, beneath that cold exterior, something was wrong. Lyra squeezed her eyes shut as a sudden, sharp pang of sorrow pierced her chest—not her own sorrow, but a heavy, suffocating grief that smelled of rain and burning velvet. It was accompanied by a flash of memory: a grand hall painted in banners of silver and blood, a crown falling to a marble floor, and a brother’s bitter laugh echoing through the dark. Lyra gasped, opening her eyes and staring at the vampire prince. "Your brother... he didn't just exile you. He made you watch them kill your guards." Julian froze. His crimson eyes snapped to hers, narrowing into thin, lethal slits. The temperature in the enclosed cave plummeted instantly. "How do you know that?" "I... I felt it," Lyra stammered, pressing her palm over her pounding heart. "When you bit me. When the light erupted. I felt your thoughts, Julian. I felt your regret." Julian was on his feet in an instant. Before Lyra could blink, he bridged the distance between them, leaning down so close she could feel the arctic chill radiating from his skin. He grabbed her left wrist, turning it up to reveal the glowing mark carved into her skin—a delicate, burning crest of silver flames wrapped around a dark crimson ring. On his own right hand, an identical mark pulsed in soft, steady cadence. "It wasn't just a spell reaction," Julian whispered, his smooth voice edged with a rare, raw tension. "It is a Blood Bond. An ancient, primordial tether. Our life forces, our magic, and our emotions are now linked." "Linked?" Lyra’s voice pitched higher with rising panic. "For how long? Undo it! Use your magic and break it!" "It cannot be unbroken," Julian said, his jaw tightening as he released her wrist as if burned. "If you die, my core will shatter. If I am killed, your heart will cease to beat. We are bound until one of us meets an absolute end." The reality of his words crashed over Lyra like a bucket of ice water. She was an unranked, impoverished human girl who couldn't heat a crucible, now tethered to an exiled pureblood prince hunting for a lost throne. If the Mage Council discovered she shared a blood bond with a high-tier vampire, they wouldn't just expel her—they would burn her at the stake to preserve the purity of the academy's bloodlines. "The Council..." Lyra breathed, her hands beginning to shake. "If they see this mark—" "They will execute you," Julian interrupted flatly. "And in doing so, they will murder me. My brother’s assassins fail tonight, but the Council would finish their work for them." He looked at the wall of collapsed stone blocking the cavern exit. With a flick of his wrist, a dark, shadowy mist gathered around his fingers. The raw power that had been completely drained from him moments ago was returning—replenished and altered by her own elemental life force. With a soft, heavy thud, the dark mist shoved several massive boulders aside, clearing a narrow opening back toward the lower cellars of Ashwood. Julian turned back to her, offering a hand. His expression had smoothed back into an unreadable, aristocratic mask, but through the bond, Lyra could feel the quiet, defensive wall he was hastily erecting around his mind to shut her out. "We have two problems, Lyra," Julian said, using her name for the first time. "First, we must leave this place before the castle wards register the structural collapse. Second, a girl living in the lower barracks, scraping by on stolen alchemy dust, cannot hide a Pureblood mark for long." "I can hide it!" Lyra snapped, pulling her sleeve down to cover her wrist, though her voice betrayed her terror. "I'll wear gloves. I'll stay out of sight." "You are a terrible liar, and your magic is far too volatile now that it has tasted pureblood energy," Julian countered, his tone leaving no room for debate. "Starting tomorrow, you no longer belong to the lower rings. I am pulling you into the Highblood Circle." Lyra stared at him in utter disbelief. The Highblood Circle was the elite roster of Ashwood—reserved exclusively for high mages, wealthy lords, and powerful foreign nobility. Low-tier students like her weren't even allowed to walk on the same side of the courtyard. "They'll destroy me down there," Lyra whispered. "The noble students hate people like me." "They will try," Julian said softly, his crimson eyes gleaming in the dark as he stepped through the narrow gap in the stone. "But as long as you are by my side, they will have to go through me first. Move, little mage. Dawn is coming." With a heavy heart and the mark on her wrist burning like a secret fire, Lyra swallowed her fear and followed the vampire prince into the shadows.
