Chapter 2 Reborn

850 Words
Leaning back on the sofa, Penelope slowly opened her eyes. The pain and searing heat from the flames had completely vanished. She looked around in confusion. There was no fire, no Carlos and Lillie, those two cheating scumbags! So, had the fire not happened yet?! Penelope was in shock. Her body showed no signs of burns! She pinched her palm hard, the sharp pain bringing her back to full awareness. Quickly getting up from the sofa, she surveyed her surroundings. The familiar sofa, the familiar arrangement—if she remembered correctly, this was the lounge on the second floor of the venue of her engagement party with Carlos when she was twenty! So, what was this? Had she been reborn?! Judging by the scene, she had indeed been reborn to the day of her engagement party! Penelope's beautiful eyes immediately turned icy and sharp, filled with determination! Remembering how she had been tied up and thrown to the cold cement floor, forced to watch Carlos and Lillie make out in front of her, she was filled with hatred! She had vowed that she would haunt them even in hell! Now, not only did she not end up in hell, but she was reborn, which meant she could rewrite her life's script! Those two scumbags wouldn't get away with anything! In her previous life, she was deceived by Carlos and Lillie, handing over her shares in Larsson Group before dying tragically in a fire after discovering their affair. On the day she died in the fire, her younger brother was murdered, their family fortune was seized by Carlos, and her mother went missing! All of this happened because she had trusted Carlos too much, willing to do anything for him. Thus, she had suffered such a fate. But this time, she would definitely seek revenge! Fortunately, she had been reborn. There was still time to stop the tragedy of her past life. Penelope took a deep breath. She would make them pay a thousand times over for the pain they caused her! Her beautiful face was now filled with endless resolve. ***** At 7 p.m., the engagement party of Penelope and Carlos officially began. On the stage adorned with flowers, Penelope wore a stunning red dress and a beautiful diamond crown. Soft lights shone on her face, her high nose bridge casting a shadow on her cheekbones. Her skin glowed beautifully, her bright eyes sparkling, making her look extraordinarily stunning. Before coming out, Penelope had taken her time in the lounge, having a makeup artist enhance her beauty. She wanted Carlos to see who was truly beautiful—her or that plastic surgery doll, Lillie. Now, her beauty was overwhelming. Yet her expression was cold. As she scanned the people below the stage, her eyes were indifferent, her expression detached and aloof, devoid of any smile. This was supposed to be her engagement party, to marry the man she had loved for twenty years, yet her face showed nothing but disdain and even disgust. In contrast, Carlos was all smiles, his long, affectionate eyes gazing intently at Penelope. He was such a good actor! What a scumbag! He had already cheated on her, and he still pretended to love her. What a two-faced jerk. Penelope glared at him with resentment. Penelope could sense a hint of unrestrained glee in Carlos' eyes. He must be excited about the huge benefits he was about to gain from her, unable to contain his joy. His smile grew broader as he greeted the guests, making everyone believe they were deeply in love. In her past life, she had clung to him most of the time, buying him expensive gifts and introducing him to influential people to boost his career. Hmph... He wouldn't be enjoying this for long! Penelope smirked mockingly. ***** The ceremony began. The host, holding a microphone, spoke in a slightly exaggerated tone, "Ladies and gentlemen, before the engagement party begins, Mr. Benson has a special gift for Ms. Larsson. Let's all look forward to it!" The screen lit up, showing a slideshow of Penelope's life from childhood to the present. Each photo was carefully edited, complete with dates and locations. At seven, she carried a pink backpack to Disneyland; at eleven, she graduated from elementary school, smiling brightly; at fourteen, she graduated from middle school, already tall and beautiful; at seventeen, during her first trip abroad, she stood in a beautiful square with doves flying past her, the moment captured perfectly. She had always been radiant, whether Carlos was in her life or not. Never before had Penelope realized this fact so clearly. Accompanied by background music, Carlos narrated their love story, including every detail. Penelope listened to his hypocritical confession with a sneer. It was exactly the same as her past life! She remembered how deeply moved she had been, even shedding a few tears, eventually crying uncontrollably. But now, as she thought about it, it was truly the height of irony. Carlos was a scheming liar, and she had been a fool to believe his words! She deserved her misfortune!
