Zoe’s POV.
How exactly did I go from a weirdo who was constantly being moved around by their constantly absent father, to being trapped in a world of magical creatures and being told that the mother and sister that I thought dead are actually alive and apparently, not human.
Hell, apparently I wasn’t human either.
And now I’d gone from having all that information being dumped on me in the span of two hours to being told that I’d have to register in a new school, one that was apparently for magical creatures, one that I apparently didn’t have a choice but to attend.
The speed at which everything was moving was giving me whiplash, from Estelle’s explanation on how she, Chloe and I were faes– what the humans knew as fairies, how the world I was currently in, was filled with countless magical creatures, creatures that most humans wrote off as myths.
Of course I fought Estelle’s insistence, she didn’t get to be absent from my life for eighteen years, claiming that she’s done what’s best for me, then suddenly showing up and thinking she had the right to control my life.
I felt overwhelmed. My father is definitely dead right now and I won’t even be able to grieve properly.
The bed I was given was nice and soft, but it didn’t feel like home.
Of course it didn’t help that Chloe, my supposed twin was a little brat that seemed hellbent on making me miserable, whether it was trying to make me look like an i***t in front of Estelle or just f*****g with me in general, she did it. I’d always grown up with the mindset that if my twin was alive, then we’d be like two peas in a pod, but I had obviously thought wrong.
The worst part was that unfortunately for me I’d be stuck with her for the rest of the year, because she and I were in the same grade at school and Estelle had pulled some strings to ensure that she and I would have the same classes and activities most of the year, so Chloe could help me get a hang of things. I had a sinking feeling that this wasn’t going to turn out well.
“Zoe darling, it's time to go!” Estelle’s melodious voice calls from downstairs and I sigh heavily. Every part of me wants to stay put in my room, just to piss her off a little. But I’d seen them use their magic and I honestly didn’t want to experience it on myself.
I tug on the suitcase and walk downstairs with my head held high, dressed in a white shirt and baggy black trousers that Estelle had bought for me. My entire suitcase was full of things that Estelle had gotten for me, I’d wanted to refuse, but I didn’t exactly know any stores, neither did I have any money or any options really.
“You look great, oh love I’m sure you’re going to love your new school,” she says chirpily.
I frown and choose not to respond to her words. Chloe is shooting daggers at me as usual and as usual. “I don’t know why you keep acting like you’re better than us… you’re going to my school where you’re at my mercy,” she whispers when Estelle is far enough out of earshot.
I glance sideways at her and then I look away dismissively. I wasn’t particularly scared of her, maybe it’s because she had my face and I’d seen that same face crinkle in sorrow and twist in self loathing, maybe it’s because I’d been attacked by far worse than her. Either way I couldn’t care less, and maybe it was time she realised that.
“Look Chloe, I’m not sure what the hell I did to you, but whatever insecurities you have, but you really need to get over it. I don’t fancy having to look at my own face everyday and have malice stare back.”
She grinds her jaw then hurries up to her mother. I pause when I notice Estelle has her arm outstretched while muttering strange words under her breath.
“Um, what are you doing?” I ask in utter confusion.
“Creating a portal of course, how do you think we’re going to get to your school?”
I pause at a complete and utter loss for words. “I don’t…”
“Shhh…” she shushes me, then starts muttering that gibberish again and right before my eyes the space in front of her seems to rip into two and a blue light takes up the space there.
“The f**k…?”
She chuckles and waves a hand towards the portal. “Come on, let’s go in.” She takes a step and immediately she disappears into it, Chloe rolls her eyes and then walks into it too. For a moment I debated just turning around and walking back inside, but I’d be wasting my time.
Best to just embrace it at this point. I step forward and slowly I take a step into the portal and in a minute, like last night, I go from standing in front of a large picturesque house in a quiet suburban area to standing in the green, wide fields in front of a large stone building.
“The hell…” I whisper in awe.
Estelle smiles mildly. “This is your school, welcome to Everbloom School of Supernaturals.”
This was getting crazier and crazier.
~~~
Everbloom School of the Supernaturals was the most renowned centre of education for all supernatural creatures on the continent.
Or at least that was what the elderly woman that called herself the Secretary said. I really couldn’t care less if the school was f*****g Harvard, I don’t belong here and I certainly don’t want to be here.
After I’d stood on the courtyard and stared in absolute shock and horror at the imposing building for like five minutes, Chloe had scoffed and walked off, muttering something about looking for her boyfriend and Estelle had led me inside, where its aura was tinged with that feeling again.
Magic?
Even though I’d murmured and cursed when Estelle had left me with the aging, yet youthful looking woman who’d promptly fitted me into my uniform - a white button down shirt, a dark blue blazer with gold lined lapels and a blue and gold plaid skirt. I hated that at once, because back at home, we were free to dress in anything to school.
As I walked through the hallway, I took comfort in the fact that I wasn’t the strangest looking person around, a phenomenon that's never happened before.
I saw skin tones that ranged from pale like mine to dark, to blue, greens and even pink. I saw people with pointed ears, razor sharp teeth, varying colours of hair, various body sizes and varying colours of eyes ranging everywhere from blue to green, to purple, to red. I could help but stare open mouthed at them.
“Miss?” The secretary says, coughing a little. Her voice helps me snap back into reality and I quickly turn to look at her. “This is your Mr Mallowe’s class, he’ll be teaching you Herb Science and Advanced Magical Healing and according to your timetable you have his class right now.”
“Now?” I whisper in shock. “I haven’t even seen my dorm yet and my bags…”
“All that will be taken care of by the elves, we can’t have you missing any classes dear, you’re already far behind your mates,” she says with a disappointed shake of her head. As though me not knowing a damn thing about magic was my fault.
“But…”
She pulls open the door and immediately I feel all eyes turn to me, judging and piercing. For once I truly feel intimidated by my first day here. I see Chloe sitting at the very back of the class frowning at me. Some students glance between us clearly shocked and confused at the other girl who looked exactly like one of their classmates.
“Good Morning class,” the secretary bellows, grinning widely and giving me room to walk in, I dread every step I take into the room.
“Good Morning Mrs. Yoona,” the class choruses, some easily, some with a little more hesitantly.
“This is your new classmate, Zoe Marley, she is a fae but unfortunately has no formal education from any supernatural academy and was raised in the human world up until now,”
Whispers starts the moment she pauses and I wish I could sink into the very ground. “I hope you all treat her with absolute kindness and make her feel welcome. That’s all, take a seat, dear.”
I spend the next three hours ignoring the whispers and stares and trying my hardest to focus on the class. It was actually fascinating, learning about magic and the way it operated, the various healing plants and their basic uses. I took a lot of notes, but no matter how fascinated I was by the class, I was out the door the moment it was over.
Where to?
I had no idea. I had another class the next period, the study of Elementals and their Nature, I had no idea how to get to the class but I just needed to get away from these people.
The next time I take a turn down the hallway I’m corner by Chloe and what I’ve identified as her gang of followers. She smirks at me and I stare hard at her.
“You look lost,” she says.
I just snort and take a step to her right. “Thank you for your concern but I’m fine.” One of her sidekicks blocks my way and I’m forced to pause and listen to Chloe spew s**t about how I shouldn’t mess with her.
“I’m just trying to remind you of your place here,” she says again.
“Point taken. Now get the hell out of my way before I knock you in the head.”
She and her friends burst out into laughter and then they levelled death glares at me. “You really think a non magic user like you can do anything to us?” She scoffed out.
I open my mouth to reply her once more when it hits me, this powerful wave of awareness that begs to be paid attention to. I stumble back in shock from the full force of this, and that’s when the scent hits me, I can’t put a name to it, but f**k me if it isn’t the most enticing thing I’ve ever scented. It smells like everything I find comfort in at once and immediately my eyes dart around to find the source of the scent.
“Hey babe,” Chloe says chirpy to the tall guy currently standing behind her, and my eyes fall on him. At once, awareness hits me even more, somehow I know that he is where that scent was coming from, that overwhelming sensation, which I didn’t know what to make of.
“I know you-“ I take a step forward and Chloe shoots me a weird look. But I can’t help it. This absolutely breathtaking black haired, grey eyed man was oozing an aura that begged me to go to him.
What in the holy hell was happening.
“Mate…” He breathes out nest, sounding even more surprised than I am as his hand dropped from Chloe’s waist. His eyes were taking me in like nothing else matters. “You’re…”
I take a slow step back, turn around and run in the opposite direction.
