Chapter 12(continued)

Abel We stand watching her walk away. “Is she always so feisty?” “It’s been a long night. I brought Gus home and she jumped in to help heal him. My mom was too distraught to help.” I explain trying to protect Janielle. “Your father is at the hospital with the other twin?” Melvin asked. “Yes, with Quil.” “I need to speak with Gus.” Melvin insisted. “I understand.” I walk over and shake Gus’s arm. “Gus, I need you to wake up,” I call out. He opens his eyes and groans before closing them again. “Come on man, Melvin needs you to answer some questions about what happened tonight.” “We got called back to the barracks. We were ambushed, I… I don’t remember anything else.” Gus answered without opening his eyes. “Who called you?” Melvin pressed. “I… I don’t remember.” Gus groaned trying to move in bed. “I feel like I got hit by a dump truck.” “Rest, you’ve earned it,” Melvin replies walking out of the room. I follow him to the main room. “Let’s remove the corpse and I can send someone to help clean this mess in the morning. I’ll be speaking with your father before the end of the night. All I can say is thank Goddess this family was spared. We have no Alpha or Beta, but I know your father will be able to step up.” “We’ve been lucky. These attacks began against us. First Conrad was poisoned, then Nia. Followed by Masey being abducted and brought here as bait for my father. We’ve been blessed to have Janielle in our home. She saved Masey, and now today, she saved Gus.” My mom stated dabbing her eyes with a tissue. “I honestly was just going to clean his wound and put a bandage on it. She realized it was silver poisoning before any of us.” “She seems young. No way she knows all that.” “She’s 18,” I reply. “Her upbringing was unusual from my understanding.” “Just keep an eye on her. That much fight could be dangerous in the next week. We need to do our investigation to ensure there are no more pending threats to the bloodline. Then we will present our findings to the pack, then being the eldest surviving heir of the previous Alpha, Serge Vilkas will become our Alpha, our savior.” Melvin replied. I nod, knowing more than he does. Janielle’s response was to him preventing her from taking a shower and casting judgment because she’s an outsider. He’s not wrong, but she deflected his suspicions perfectly. If she acted scared or intimidated, he would have pressed and accused her of… Well, of the crime we committed. Melvin and I grab Thelma’s body and carry her outside where we put her in a van to be disposed of. We treat the bodies of all traitors the same way, they get put in a furnace at the morgue and burned, with no last rites, no pyre, just gone. When Melvin leaves, I return to the house to find my mom cleaning up the broken furniture. “Mom, we’ll take care of this in the morning,” I tell her. “No, I need to stay busy until your father comes home. I’m just so worried. I know the threat is over now, but I’m worried. I need to go see Quil myself.” “Right, do you want to go and I’ll take care of the kids?” “No, no. Janielle didn’t seem like herself, you should go check on her.” She insisted. “She was just tired.” “Son, I’ve gotten to know that girl. She’s tired, but also in shock. She prevented Masey from being poisoned, warned you about an attack on your brothers she prayed was wrong, then saved Gus’s life, followed by getting her revenge and helping me all in less than 12 hours. She needs you more than I do right now. Go take care of her.” “Okay. I love you, mom.” “I love you too, son.” She gave me a kiss on the cheek and then returned to picking up the mess. I climb the stairs to hear the shower still running. That’s odd, Janielle doesn’t usually take this long to shower. I knock on the bathroom door, then enter to find her curled in a ball on the shower floor balling her eyes out. I step in, turn off the shower then wrap her in a hug. “Hey, what’s wrong babe?” I whisper as I kiss her head. “I… I don’t know.” She sobbed. “It’s okay, I’m here.” I lift her out of the shower and grab a towel as I carry her into the room. I sit down on the sofa with her on my lap as I begin to dry her off. “Everything is going to be okay now. I promise it’s over, nothing will happen again. You’re safe.” I kiss her lips as I hold her tight. She just remains in my arms sobbing without a word. I want so bad to do something to console her more than just hold her, but there is nothing. I hate feeling useless, but she is clinging to me like she’s afraid I’m going to dissolve away. After almost an hour of her crying in my arms, she finally fell asleep. I carry her to the bed, laying her down and pulling the covers up when she stirs. “Abel…” “I’m here, babe. Just need to go to the bathroom and get out of these wet clothes. I’ll be five minutes.” “Don’t leave me.” She murmurs reaching for me. I peel off my wet clothes and slide into bed holding her. “I’ll never leave you, Jani. You are my mate, my love, my world.” I whisper kissing her head as I rub her back, soothing her back to sleep. Once she’s asleep again, I slip out of bed to use the bathroom. I’ve needed to pee since I pulled her out of the shower. “Abel?” She calls out as I finish washing my hands and return to her. “I’m here,” I reply sliding into bed, laying my head against her chest and wrapping her around me. I love cuddling with her like this. She may be half my size, but feeling her wrap around me feels like paradise to me. As much as I enjoy holding her tucking into my arms, this cuddle position is more for me.
