Chapter 32In the village Pia and Kaire had recently vacated, a couple lay awake, concerned by raised voices on the other side of the wall yet reluctant to interfere. Only a few words were clearly audible, which was irritating. Deprived of sleep, the couple would have preferred to hear the whole argument. Earlier in the evening, they had heard Salli, the carer employed by neighbour Bruno, answer the door and greet a woman they had previously discovered was Salli’s friend Vina.
