Chapter 23The penultimate Sky-ship departed for Earth, leaving Pia unemployed and anxious to return home. Standing outside Commander Breta’s office, she hesitated before knocking, confident he would admit her but aware it wasn’t her place to suggest they leave as soon as possible.
‘Enter,’ came the gruff reply.
The door opened and stepping inside she was surprised to find the commander staring at his monitor, hands cradling his face.
‘I’m sorry to disturb you, Commander Breta, but may I speak with you for a moment?’
He nodded and gestured towards the chair in front of his desk.
‘Thank you.’ She moved forward and slipped into the seat.
‘So the evacuation is almost complete,’ he said, raising his eyes from the screen.
