Chapter 25The settlement began to stir as morning light filtered through blinds left open to admit the sea breeze. Climate control served its purpose but most of the inhabitants preferred a natural atmosphere during cool season nights. Mac had been up for hours, sleep impossible following Commander Breta’s request. The correlation between a video on umbilical surgery and Kaire’s status had been apparent from the moment Mac read the file heading; he had suspected Kaire was a clone ever since the meeting with the Kauri Coast Administrator. Kaire’s dispassionate responses to questions about the Sky clones had seemed contrived and when Mac had met his gaze across the table, personal sorrow was clearly perceptible.
