Looking for a Job

Chapter 1 Cora’s POV     “Cora, don’t be so hard on yourself. You just graduated last week, sometimes it takes a little while to find a decent job” my best friend, Olivia Lewis, tells me.   “I know this, Livi, but that doesn’t help me with the bills right now. You know dad lost his job, and mom has to stay home with him to take care of him. He is still too weak to be able to take care of himself. It is all on me, and I am feeling the pressure. I always thought if I ever got to go to Harvard, that everything would be easy after that.” I told her.   “Cora, I know you feel the pressure, but I know you are about to find something soon, I just have a feeling about it, and you know that they always come true when I do”, my other best friend Iris Martin tells me.   We have all been best friends since we met in our first year of high school. Iris had just moved here from Texas and did not know anyone yet. Iris was gorgeous with a slim build and thick brown hair, and deep brown eyes. She basically looks the same as she did in middle school, just a bit more filled out these days. She was a size 6, but she has some curves to her now and she occasionally modeled as needed for her boss when he needed her too, but she was officially his PA. Olivia had been going to a private school here in New York, but her parents felt like she would get more out of the experience by going to the local high school, plus her mom had just lost her job, so their finances were tight at the time. After the first year, they asked her if she wanted to go back to the private school, but she did not want to leave us, and we have been inseparable ever since. Olivia was beautiful as well, with her blonde hair and grey eyes, with a hint of blue in them. Sometimes it felt like she could see right through someone when she was looking at you to decide if you were telling the truth or not. Livi is a shapely size 10 and is a lawyer, and although she is young, she is a good one. I am also blonde, but my hair color is a little darker than Olivia’s golden blonde. I am also curvy with big brown eyes and a voluptuous figure. I look just like my mom, except she is slimmer than I am. I am a size 8, well my waist is a 6, but I prefer to round up as my boobs and butt are even more obvious when I wear fitted clothes. I prefer to go up a size, so they are less prominent and obvious.   “I know how your feelings work, Iris, and you are accurate, so I really hope that you continue your 100% accuracy rating with this too,” I said as I laughed and grabbed my glass of water from the table to take a sip.   “Cora?” I heard someone across the room call my name and look around “Cora Bowers?” I saw a handsome face come into view and I hop up to give him a hug.   “Christian Siler, I haven’t seen you in a year. What have you been doing since graduation?” I asked him.   “I work for a local financial house in Manhattan. You just graduated, right? Where did you land?” Christian asked me.   “Nowhere yet, unfortunately, but I am looking. So, hopefully, something will turn up soon” I answered him. “Oh, I am sorry, where are my manners? These are my best friends, Iris Martin and Olivia Lewis. We always meet for breakfast here on Sundays to try to start the week off right. Ladies, this handsome man is Christian Siler. We went to Harvard together. He has an MBA as well and is a guru with numbers.”   “I hate to hear that you haven’t found a job yet. Here, take my phone and give me your number. I happen to know of two available jobs that you would qualify for, and I can almost guarantee that you will get one of them”, Christian tells me.   “I don’t want you having to call in any favors for me, Christian, I did graduate third in my class, and I am sure something is going to come up soon. I have put several resumes out, so I am bound to hear back from one of them”, I told him.   “Oh, this is no problem, my dad wanted me to come and work for him, but I couldn’t because I am his son, and he asked me if I knew of anyone that would fit, and you would. Plus, this is a strong company with great benefits. I could guarantee you would start out at over 100k a year as well”, Christian tells me.   “That would be wonderful Christian, where does your dad work?” I asked him as I handed over my cell phone to him with my number saved in it. I heard a ping sound out.   “That is my number. I just sent you a text. I have to go, but I will call him as soon as I leave here, and I will message you tonight what time and where you are to meet him tomorrow”. Christian calls back to me and he takes off out the door.   “He didn’t say where his dad works,” I said to them, as I sat back down in the booth.   “Girl, does it matter, it is a job and I heard 100K plus a year. We have a winner. That is all I need to know myself”, Livi tells me and then starts grinning really widely at me. “You know he likes you right, Mr. Hotty, he has a thing for you girl. Why haven’t you dated him?”   “Livi, you know that I was too busy with school, and I had to come home to help my parents every weekend. I needed to go grocery shopping, and help my mom clean, and then I went back to school for the week. I had to keep my grades up so I could still apply for as many scholarships as I could get, to help me pay for my housing, books, and food while I was there in Cambridge. I did save money by getting my bachelor’s degree at Columbia University on scholarships, but I still have $200,000 left to pay Harvard in student loans, and I still need to help mom and dad with the house payments each month. It has been so hard for them since dad lost his job this year because he got too weak to work from the chemotherapy. I need to help them with dad’s medical bills. They need my help, and I am going to help them. I did not have time to date with all that going on. I never thought he thought of me that way. You are wrong, Livi, he was just being nice to me, and I hope his dad is willing to give me a chance. I really need this opportunity”, I told her.   “No, I think Livi is right. I saw how he looked at you. He heard you laugh, and he got up quickly, dropped some money on the table, and came straight over here to speak to you, honey. I think Livi is right. I would also like to point out that I was also right when I said that you would be getting a job soon. Always listen to me when I have a feeling” Iris laughs and then gives me a side hug.   “I don’t have a job yet, Iris. Don’t jump the gun. If it isn’t with a strong company that is going to last, I really shouldn’t even take it”, I tell her.   I heard my phone ping again and it was Christian asking for my email address. I sent it to him, and he told me that I would be getting an email confirmation for my interview tomorrow at 10 am and wished me good luck. Five minutes later, I got an email notification of an interview and I gasped in surprise, it was for one of my top three companies that I wanted to work for in the Financial District here in New York, at Lauder Financial.   I start to tear up as I turn my phone towards them for them to see the when and where and they gasp too. They are aware of the name, although for them it is for a secondary reason.   “No freaking way, you are such a lucky heifer” I heard Iris say. I know she is jealous as she religiously follows Collin Lauder in all that he does, and believe me, he does a lot.   “I could only be so lucky to get a spot there. It would be a dream come true”, I tell them.   “Honey, you were third in your class. You have earned your shot at this. Christian knows your worth, or he would have just asked you out, instead of asking where you were working and then trying to help you get this job. Even though he didn’t have to call in a favor from a friend, he still had to reach out to his dad for you, so it was a lateral move for him. It was still a favor for you, honey.” I will have you refer back to what I said earlier, he likes you. Don’t be surprised if he asks you out whether you get the job or not”, Livi tells me and Iris nods in agreement.   “He is an attractive man. I haven’t really dated since high school and all of them were lacking then, it was just a waste of my time. I didn’t go out much. He is smart, so we would have things to talk about. If he does ask me out, I might say yes to him. It couldn’t hurt, you never know he might be the one”, I told them and sat back in the booth. I think he is cute too, so if he does ask, I will go out with him.   “Hey, if you guys aren’t busy, do you want to go to the consignment store with me on the way home? I need a few new clothes, especially if I get the job. I will have to dress better than I do at the moment. I just need two skirts and two pairs of pants and two jackets, one set black and one set navy blue. I think I can get away with the shirts that I have, as I will leave my jackets on to keep anyone from seeing that they are not dress shirts. It will have to do until I can get paid and go shopping again”, I asked them.   “You know you never have to twist my arm to go shopping,” Livi tells me.   “Yes honey, you know I love to shop,” Iris tells me. We finish our drinks and pay our checks, before heading out to see what bargains we can find.
