The pause that followed stretched out forever, for eternity. Sam thought of a million things to say but absolutely no words to say them with.
“What brings you here?” Ellie said finally. “And if you say 'a car,' I'll slap you.”
“Mmm, tempting,” Sam said, nodding. “Actually, Max asked me here. And you?”
Her eyes narrowed. “Me too. When's your appointment?”
“Two. Yours?”
Her eyes gave the answer. She folded her arms. “What's he up to?” she asked as if Sam were somehow responsible.
He shrugged. “Beats me. Nothing good, if I know Max.”
Ellie still had her laser-blue eyes fixed on him. “That's for sure.”
Sam nodded. Okay, then. He spotted the
