Milo’s POV
“What’s Up Dairia?” I said, walking into the kitchen. She looked so beautiful with her long curly hair and beautiful hazel green eyes. I stopped thinking of Adairia as my sister a few years ago when she and my sister decided to go to some party and get drunk. I had to go pick them up because they were too wasted to drive. I was so mad at them that day, they knew better. For one they were underage and for two they knew if they drink just have one or two drinks don’t get too f****d up where somebody could take advantage of them. Thank God that didn’t happen and they had a good sense to call me to pick them up. When I got to them they were leaning all over each other and can barely stand on their own. I fussed them out so bad it wasn’t even funny. I ended up carrying both of them to their rooms and when I put Adairia in her bed she put her hand on my face and kissed me like her life depended on it. I was in shock at first then I started feeling it and ended up kissing her back and when I realized what I was doing I broke off our kiss tucked her into bed and left. I felt so guilty afterwards because I always looked at her as a sister and she was 17 and I was 30 she was still a minor at the time but that kiss was a game changer, that’s when I started seeing her as more than a little sister. My eyes were open I started seeing how beautiful she really was, don’t get me wrong I always thought she was cute but the way I started feeling I wanted to be with her, to make her mines, to share a life with her but I knew I couldn’t because she’s been apart of the family for so long everybody was so protective over her, I knew I wouldn’t hurt her at least not on purpose but I didn’t want to take that chance so I kept my distance.
I was so happy when she went away to college because I didn’t have to fight my feelings for her as bad. I wouldn’t see her as often anymore, and she was miles away from here.
Flashback
One day I decided to surprise my sister and go see her at college. When I got to their dorm room Adairia opened the door in pajamas and a robe and was sweating profusely. She looked up at me even though she looks like she can barely keep her eyes opened and try giving me a smile “Tamala isn’t here Milo, she’s still in class but you can wait here until she gets out. I’m sure she’ll be happy to see you.” She said while taking deep breaths. I didn’t know what was wrong with her but it was scaring me. She had sweat coming down her face and she can barely breathe. I picked her up and took her back into the dorm room and laid her on the couch. I went into the kitchen to get a cold rag to put on her forehead. When I got back to the living room she was laying there with her eyes closed. I put the rag on her head and stroke her cheeks with my other hand trying to get her to open her eyes for she can tell me what’s wrong with her for I can help her.
She finally tries to open her eyes; I looked into her eyes “What’s wrong with you Adairia?” I asked.
“I started to cough and sneeze a few days ago and just thought I was catching a cold. I went to Walgreen’s and got some cold medicine thinking that was going to help. When I woke up yesterday I felt worse than the day before and I had the chills but when I woke up today I felt like death walking. I had chills, I was starting to sweat, my body ache. I don’t know what’s wrong with me I just thought if I laid down and kept taking the medicine it will go away but I guess not. I don’t like feeling like this.” She said, between every word she was trying to breathe.
“Have you been to the doctors yet?” I asked, she shook her head no.
I took off her robe and went to find a thermometer for I can check her temperature. When I came back in the room she was thrashing around on the couch burning up, I checked her temperature and I was shocked that she made it this far, her temp was 103.2. I went into her room to find her some socks and shoes; I put them on her and picked her up, carried her to my car and took her to the hospital.
About 20 minutes later we show up at the hospital, I parked my car in valet and carried her into the hospital I was so glad that the waiting area wasn’t crowded. I walked to the receptionist desk with Dairia in my arms she was asleep at the moment. When the receptionist looked up at me she smiled “Yes, how may I help you?” she asked me. I looked down at Adairia “she’s not feeling well and is burning up really bad, her temp is 103.2.” I said in a hurry. She looks at me with wide eyes, “OK, go sit over there I’m going to page the nurse for you and they will be out in a minute. In the meantime I need you to feel out some paperwork concerning the patient.” I nodded and took the clipboard she gave me with all the paperwork on it. I sat down in one of the chairs with Adairia still in my arms, I didn’t want to let her go because if I did I was afraid that something might happen so readjusted her in my arms and started feeling out the paperwork. I was so glad that I knew so much about her to the point where I can feel out her doctor forms for her. I looked down at her and whisper in her ear “everything is going to be OK; I’m going to take good care of you.” I promised to her and I meant every word.
I made a mental note to myself to text Tamala and Alli as soon as we get Adairia settle into a room because I know both of them will be worried out of their minds if they come back home and she’s not there plus I forgot to grab her phone.
I finished all the paperwork and took it back to the receptionist, she asked my name and what’s my relations to the patient, I told her I was a family friend visiting from out of town, which was the truth but I badly wanted to tell her I was her man. I walked back over to the chair we were sitting in; I just kept stroking her hair and telling her everything will be OK. “Mr. West the nurse will be out in a minute to get y’all. Do you want me to bring a wheelchair out for her?”
“No, we’re fine thank you.”
A few minutes later the nurse came out and took us in the back to the hospital room. I laid her down on the bed, she was still asleep. I held her hand until the doctor came in and start looking her over. They took her temperature it was still 103, she was still hot and having trouble breathing. While the doctor was hooking up machines and working on her, I sent a group message to Tamala and Alli.
Me: Hey ladies I came into town to surprise y’all. When I got there Adairia opened the door and she didn’t look to well I bought her to the hospital because her temp is 103.2, that’s where we are at now. The doctor is looking her over and going to be running some tests.
Tamala: OMG! Is she going to be OK? I knew she was sick but it wasn’t this bad when I checked on her this morning.
Alli: I’m leaving class now. I’m on my way, text me the hospital address Milo.
Me: Yes of course she’s going to be OK; you know she’s a fighter. Alli you don’t have to rush here I was just letting y’all know what’s going on. I didn’t want you to worry when you got home and she wasn’t there. She doesn’t have her phone either.
Alli: Milo I don’t care what you are saying right now, my sister is sick and her temperature super high I can’t lose my twin. I’m coming up to that hospital so text me the address NOW.”
Alli doesn’t play about her twin at all. I knew it was a long shot telling them not to come up here but they loved Adairia to death. I understand where Alli’s coming from because I’m a twin too and I would definitely be on my way to the hospital if Nikko was in the hospital. I text them the address and went back in the room. I sat down next to her bed holding her hand; they have her on a breathing machine to get her breathing back to normal. I’m glad I showed up when I did, I don’t want to think about what state she could’ve been in if I didn’t show up to surprise them.
She finally opens her eyes and looks at me, she tries to talk but I stopped her “just keep breathing in and out you’re going to be OK, baby I promise.” I said while stroking her hair and kissed her forehead. She gives me a smile and nods her head.
A few minutes later the doctor walks in, “Mr. West it’s a good thing you bought her in when you did, she was started to not be able to breathe on her own, her lungs was almost collapsing. Mrs. Jenkins…..”
“Ms. Jenkins.” I said correcting him.
“I’m sorry Ms. Jenkins here is a fighter she has the flu and double pneumonia. She will be Ok. I’m going to watch her and keep her on the breathing treatment to get her breathing back to normal. Then we going to try her on some antibiotics and see how they’ll do, I’ll be right back.”
“Thank you Doctor.”
I went to the sink and got a wet rag to put on her forehead to cool her off and start wiping her face where sweat has dripped down it. She looks at me and removes the breathing mask, I tried to stop her but she removes my hand “Thank you for taking care of me Milo, I really appreciate it.” She said.
“I will always take care of Dairia, I’m just glad I showed up when I did. I don’t want to think about what could’ve happened if I didn’t decide to come surprise you all. Now put the mask back on your face and breathe in and breathe out.”
A few moments later the nurse escorted Tamala and Alli into the hospital room. Alli ran to her sister wrapping her arms around her crying. “I was so scared when Milo text us. I didn’t know what to think or do. I left class immediately and came here.” Alli said.
“Stop crying Alli I’m going to be OK, the doctor is giving me breathing treatments and antibiotics.”
“Well did they say what is wrong with you?” Alli asked.
“I have double pneumonia and the flu. They want to watch over me so I have to stay here overnight.”
“I’m going to go home and get some clothes for us and I’ll be back up here to stay with you tonight. Milo, will you stay with her until I get back?” Alli asked.
I nodded my head yes. After Tamala and Alli left, the room was quiet again. A few minutes later the doctor walked in to give Dairia her medicine, I helped her sit up straight in the bed for she wouldn’t try taking it while lying down. After the doctor left Adairia looked at me with those beautiful eyes. After seeing her again my feelings started to comeback in full force, I was ready to claim her, make her mines and take care of her but I knew I couldn’t do that. I was so scared when I seen that she could barely breathe when she opened the door for me.
“Thank you again Milo, you don’t have to stay. I’m sorry for ruining your visit.” She said breaking the silence.
“Stop thanking me Adairia I’m glad I was here to do it. You didn’t ruin my visit; if I wasn’t there to help there’s no telling what could’ve happened.” I said giving her a hug, when I pulled back I looked into her eyes and kissed her. The kiss started off slow then it started to heat up pretty fast, I didn’t care that she was sick and could possible give it to me, I rather I be sick than her anyways, I don’t mind taking away her pain. Then we finally pulled back and just stared at each other smiling.
End Flashback
That was the last time we kissed, we saw each other afterwards but I was trying to avoid her, which was hard to do since our families are so close. A year or so later I met Iris and felled in love. Now she’s a thorn in my side but that’s a whole another story.
“Hey Milo, how you been?” she said.
“I’m been well, how you been?
“I’m good, glad to be back home, I missed everyone.”
“We missed you too.” I meant that, I did miss her, yes I know I have a girlfriend and yes I do love Iris but now that Adairia is back in close proximity I can’t help but to wonder how it would be if we was together I guess we will never know.
A few seconds later my son comes in looking for me but when he see Adairia he forgets all about me and runs to her. “Auntie Dairia” he said while hugging her legs.
“Hey Kenny Baby.” She said while picking him up and kissing him all over his face. Seeing her with my son brings a smile to my face, I love seeing my son interact with everybody, he brings joy to everybody’s life, and I just can’t imagine my life without him in it.
