Milo’s POV
I was finishing up work at my office. I am the CEO and co-owner of West and Jones Architect and Design Company. My best friend Asher Jones and I started this company about 10 years ago after deciding we didn’t want to work for anybody but ourselves. We also employ a good number of our family members and friends as well. I was sitting at my desk finishing up on some paper work when my phone rang signaling that my secretary Mrs. Brenda was calling in, “Hey Mrs. Brenda what can I do for you?” I asked. Mrs. Brenda been with us ever since we started our company, she is a middle aged widow with 4 kids. Her husband passed away 2 years ago in a car accident, he got hit by a drunk driver while on his way home from work. “Hey Mr. West I was just letting you know that Iris is on line 1 for you” said Mrs. Brenda.
I sighed deeply I really didn’t have time for Iris’s s**t right now. Iris is my live in girlfriend and mother of my 2 year old son Kenny. I met her a few years ago when a few of my family members, friends and I went to Miami, Florida to celebrate my twin brother Nikko’s and I birthday. She was so beautiful when I first laid eyes on her, she captured my heart that day but something in a year and a half have changed, something in her have changed. I don’t know what it is just yet but our relationship isn’t like what it use to be.
“Hello, Mr. West you still there?” asked Mrs. Brenda.
“Yes, ma’am, put her through. Remember that I’m leaving early to go help my parents’ setup for the barbeque. You and the kids will be there, right?” I asked.
“Yes we wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world.” Said Mrs. Brenda.
Mrs. Brenda was more then my secretary she was my friend and part of the family. We was all there for her when her husband John died by that drunk driver. She has three beautiful triplet daughters who are only 2 years older than my son Kenny and a son who is the spitting image of his father. Kenny and Mrs. Brenda’s children are the best of friends.
I took a deep sigh before answering the phone “Yes, Iris what can I do for you?”
“What do you mean what can you do for me? I’m not one of your clients Milo. I’m your girlfriend and the mother of your son; you need to treat me with respect.” She screamed into the phone. I had to pull the phone away from my ears before she busted my eardrums. You see this is Iris all the time she thinks that everybody should give her respect but she doesn’t show respect to anybody in return.
“I do respect you Iris. I’m just a little busy right now trying to finish up this paperwork so I can get out of here early. What’s up? What did you need honey?” I said sweetly to ease the tension.
“I was calling to see what time you were getting off of work. I would like to have dinner ready for you when you get home.” She said with attitude.
“Iris I already told you that I won’t be home right away because after I pick up Kenny from daycare we are going over to my parents’ house for the welcome home barbeque for Tamala, Adairia and Alli. You already knew that because you were invited too.” I said. She smacked her teeth real loud. I honestly didn’t know what her problem was with my family. Ever since she met them they always been nice to her and showed her respect. See my family allow you to make mistakes they never voiced their opinions out loud to you, they pretty much just let you figure it out on your own. Grant it I knew some of my family members didn’t care for Iris but that’s only because how she acts. She acts all high and mighty and look down her nose at everybody. Yes, a lot of people would ask me why am I with somebody like that but to be honest, Iris wasn’t like this when we first met. She was so sweet and loving and amazing to be around, now she’s a thorn in my side. The only person who really might voice his opinion is Nikko only because he’s my twin brother, so he can feel what I feel regardless of it being happiness or sadness. Honestly he knew I was having a son before I did, I thought that was kind of scary but I guess it’s a twin thing.
“Ugh, you know I don’t like those people. So why would I go to their stupid barbeque. I wish you wouldn’t take our son over there either.” Yelled Iris into the phone.
“Iris I don’t get why you don’t like them they never did anything to you for you to dislike them so much and you know that. They never made you feel like you’re not welcomed into the family. They are my parents and Kenny’s grandparents so we’re going to go.”
“No, they only accept me because of Kenny and you know it. If it wasn’t for Kenny they would’ve been wanted me out of the picture.”
“Iris how stupid do you really sound right now. We were together 2 years before you got pregnant with Kenny so stop using that as an excuse.” I said, at this point I was super fed up with her bullshit. I’m at the point where I just wanted to end this whole relationship. It seem like it wasn’t worth fighting for anymore. She knows how close I am to my family. My family and I, we are a close knit group. We always have each others back no matter what.
I took a deep breath before continuing, “look Iris are you coming to the barbeque or not because Kenny and I are going and that’s final.” I said a little annoyed.
“No I’ll just stay home and watch TV or something, y’all have a great time.” She said with an attitude and hung up. I took another deep breath I don’t understand why she just won’t get along with my family because as far as I know they never did anything or said anything out of the way to her. I don’t even know why I try anymore. It’s always the same s**t.
I glanced at my clock it was going on 1:30pm, I missed lunch today so I can finish up this paperwork because I need to leave early to help my parents. The latest I wanted to work was until 3:30pm so I have 2 more hours to finish this work. When I started reading these files again there was a knock on my door, “Come in,” I said, it was my best friend and business partner Asher Jones. He came into my office and sat in the chair on the other side of my desk. “What’s up Lo, did you get a chance to look over the Berkley file, yet?” he asked. “No not yet I was about to until I got a phone call that interrupted me.” I said a little bitterly. He didn’t even need to ask me what phone call I was talking about because he already knew. Asher and my twin brother Nikko know me better than anybody even better than myself sometimes. He gave me that look and just shook his head. He was getting ready to say something when I cut him off, “I already know what you’re going to say so don’t say it. I don’t want to get into that right now. I was bout to start looking over it when you knocked on the door. Why, what’s up? Did they want to change something else again?” The Berkley Family is a high class family based in Atlanta, Georgia. They want us to build a car with a pink body and Louis Vuitton on the inside; basically they want us to build a purse on wheels. Every week we heard something new that they wanted added to the design so it wouldn’t surprise me if they changed something or added something.
“No, surprisingly they didn’t change anything this time. I was just asking for the building team and the designing team can get started on it right away. We have to start showing them sketches soon. I’m supposed to meet with them in 2 weeks to show them something.” Asher said.
“I’ll be done with it in a few. When I’m done I’ll have Mrs. Brenda bring it to you. I’m going to head out of here for I can go pick up Kenny and head to my parents’ house to help with the barbeque when I’m finished.”
“Alright I’ll leave you to it, after I finalize everything I’ll be heading out myself, Terry and I will see you over your parents house later.”
I gave him a head nod and went back to reading the file to make sure we had everything in order to present to the Berkley’s in a few weeks.
I was finally done with all my paperwork and it was time to get ready to head out to go pick up my son. I gather all my things and headed to the door, I stopped at Mrs. Brenda’s desk first, “Mrs. Brenda here’s the Berkley file can you please take this to Ash. Let him know I already signed on it, he just needs to sign underneath my name.”
“Yes sir Mr. West I’ll get it to him right away sir,” she said.
“Thank You! I’m about to head out; I’ll see you later and don’t stay here too long, OK?”
“Yes sir, once I’m done scheduling the rest of these appointments, I’m out of here.”
“OK get home safe, see you later.”
I walked outside it was a very hot day in Phoenix, Arizona, I swear this weather was like death walking, that’s how hot it was. I got into my car and turned my AC on full blast for I can cool down, from the short time I was outside I started sweating from the heat like I was out there running a 50 yard dash. I started to pull out of my parking space and head to my son’s daycare.
Thirty minutes later I pulled into the daycares parking lot, I got out of the car and walked inside. A young woman was sitting at the receptionist desk playing on her phone, didn’t even hear the doorbell ding that let people know that somebody walked in. I cleared my throat to get her attention; she finally looks up startled, as she should be not paying attention to her surroundings something serious could’ve happened.
“I’m sorry, may I help you?” the young woman asked.
“Yes, I’m here to pick up my son Kenny West.”
“OK! May I see your ID first, Mr. West?” She took my ID and looked at my son’s file to make sure that it matches the name on my ID. I choose this daycare because of the safe area it is in. The staff always makes sure the kids safety comes first, nobody is allowed to leave with a kid without having their ID checked and if the name on the ID isn’t in the child’s file you couldn’t leave with them. She gives me back my ID, “here you are Mr. West, let me page his teacher and they’ll bring him out in a minute, you can have a seat over there sir,” she said. I gave a curt nod and sat down. A few minutes later my son was running out towards me, “Dada, Dada” he said in his cute baby voice, I swear this little boy warms my heart, he is my world.
As soon as I got up from my seat he jumped in my arms “Dada, Dada” he said again.
“What’s up, little man, how was your day?” I said to my son.
“It waz gud Dada. I got to pway with toyz and I wearn how to wead,” he said in his baby voice.
“Oh really, that’s what’s up little man. You ready to go?” He gave me a nod and we headed out to the car, I buckled him in and headed to my parents house.
Adairia’s POV
I was in the car with my best friend Tamala and my twin sister Alli. We were on our way back home to Phoenix, Arizona from college. We just spent 4 years at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. I was so ready to be back in my hometown but it’s going to take longer than I expected because we ended up getting a flat tire so we’re waiting for AAA to come change it.
“Tam did you call your parents to let them know we are running behind?” I asked her.
“Damn, no I didn’t, I knew there was something I was forgetting to do.”
My twin sister Alli started laughing because she knew how forgetful Tamala can be but we loved her anyways. I just shook my head, I swear this girl is so forgetful and get side tracked easily but I love her dearly she always been like a sister to me. We were about 2 hours away when our tire went flat. I don’t know if we ran over something or what.
I was looking out the window thinking about seeing Milo again. I couldn’t wait to see his drop dead gorgeous self. I’ve been in love with Milo West for as long as I can remember. He is 6’2 compare to my 5’0 self with green hazel eyes and sexy chocolate caramel skin; he makes me melt every time I see him. I was so sad when I found out about his girlfriend Iris, I literally cried for days in my dorm room. I couldn’t understand why he couldn’t love me, why he didn’t want me, couldn’t he see how much I loved him and wanted to be with him. Well I guess you know what they say; guys are a little slow when it comes to love and women. Yes I know it was probably a little childish that I cried but hey what can I say, my heart was broken and my feelings were hurt. Grant it no he didn’t know how I felt, and it wasn’t his fault at all but that’s how I was feeling. Tamala helped me get through it she always been a good friend and sister. Tamala is Milo’s sister and she knew about my crush on her brother since day one. She always told me to tell him how I felt but I couldn’t do that; I was too shy about that sort of thing. Tamala and I been friends since we were 4 years old and met in pre-school. She is the only real friend I have other than my twin sister Alli.
I always thought it was a little school girl crush I had on Milo and thought I would grow out of it but when time went by it turned into love.
Tamala was trying to convince me that this is my chance to let him know how I feel but I can’t do that because he is still with Iris and they have a son together, one thing I am NOT is a home wrecker. I don’t care how much I love him and want to be with him I will not break up his happy home, I rather love him from afar than do something so juvenile like that. Tamala only trying to get me to tell him how I feel because she doesn’t like Iris. Honestly nobody in their family does, I don’t either. It’s not because she is with the guy I been in love with forever, it’s because of her, her attitude is so horrible and she is so unfriendly. I don’t know why he would want to be with somebody like that but what do I know.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when Tamala tapped my shoulder, “Yes?” I said.
“I called my mom to let her know what was going on. She said to be safe and let her know when the AAA truck gets here.”
I nodded my head and laid my seat back to get me a little rest because I know once I get home I won’t get any sleep because our families will be partying too hard.
A few hours later we finally were on our way home.
