Chapter 20: The Choice

1525 Words
The cathedral was crowded now. Sarah sat in a corner, watching the others with the wary expression of someone who'd been told that the universe was far stranger and more dangerous than she'd ever imagined. Lily was asleep on a cot that Tomás had set up, her breathing soft and even. Echo had explained everything. The systems, the originals, Victoria's plan. The twelfth system living inside Sarah, dormant and waiting. Sarah had listened without interruption, her face cycling through disbelief, fear, and finally a cold, determined anger. "So there's something inside me," Sarah said. "Something this Victoria woman wants. And she'll kill me to get it." "She'll do worse than kill you," Echo said. "She'll extract it while you're alive. The process is... not survivable." "And my daughter? What happens to Lily?" "Victoria doesn't care about children. She'd leave Lily alive. Orphaned, traumatized, but alive." Sarah's jaw tightened. "Then we make sure she doesn't get what she wants. What are my options?" 【She's tough. I see where you got your stubbornness from. Wait. You got it from yourself. Never mind.】 Echo laid it out. "Option one: we hide you. I've been doing this for fifty years—I can keep doing it. But Victoria's getting closer every time, and now that she knows about your connection to Jaxon, hiding will be harder." "Option two?" "We wake up the twelfth system. Fully activate it. A fully awakened system gives its bearer immense power, and the twelfth is the most powerful of all. If you can control it, you might be able to fight Victoria directly." "And if I can't control it?" "Then it controls you. And the twelfth system... its nature is different from the others. It doesn't just play back death. It commands it. The twelfth system can kill with a thought. Anyone. Everyone. If it takes over, you become the most dangerous person on the planet." 【She's not exaggerating. The twelfth system is called Death Command. Where I show death, it causes death. It's the reason the other systems were created—to balance its power. If Victoria gets it, she doesn't need a ritual. She just needs to say the word.】 Sarah looked at Jaxon. He could see the calculation happening behind her eyes—the same sharp mind that had once balanced their household budget, planned their vacations, and managed every crisis he'd ever created. "Option three," she said. "You didn't mention option three." "What's option three?" "Someone else takes the system from me. Someone who can control it." The room went quiet. Jaxon felt the system pulse in the back of his skull—uncertain, almost afraid. "That's not how it works," Echo said. "Systems choose their hosts. They can't be transferred." "They can be shared," Sarah said. "I've been feeling this thing inside me for years. I didn't know what it was, but I knew it was there. And I've felt it reaching out—toward Jaxon. Every time he came to visit Lily, it pulled toward him. Like it recognized something." 【She's right. I've felt it too. The twelfth system and I are... connected. We were created from the same source. Death Playback and Death Command. Two halves of the same coin.】 "What would sharing mean?" Jaxon asked. 【It would mean merging our systems. Death Playback and Death Command, bonded to the same host. The power would be immense—but so would the strain. Your mind would have to hold two systems simultaneously. Most people would shatter under that kind of load.】 "But not impossible." 【Nothing's impossible. Just very, very unlikely to work. And if it fails, you die, Sarah dies, and Victoria gets both systems.】 Jaxon looked at Sarah. She met his eyes steadily. "You almost killed yourself with guilt over Marcus," she said. "You nearly drank yourself to death. You've been fighting to be a better person—for Lily, for yourself. I trust you with our daughter's life. I trust you with mine." "Sarah—" "I'm not being noble, Jaxon. I'm being practical. You've already proven you can handle a system without losing yourself. I haven't. And if Victoria comes for me, I'd rather the power be in your hands than hers." Cross spoke up. "This is a terrible idea." "Probably," Sarah said. "But what's the alternative? Hide until Victoria finds us? Wait for her to pick us off one by one? At least this way, we take control." Echo looked at Jaxon. "It's your call. You're the one who'd be carrying both systems. You're the one taking the risk." Jaxon thought about Lily, sleeping peacefully in the corner. He thought about Marcus, freed from three years of s*****y. He thought about Cross and Kira and Tomás and Elena, people who'd risked everything because he'd asked them to. And he thought about Victoria Hale, three hundred years old and hungry for godhood, who would never stop until she had everything she wanted. "Do it," he said. 【Well. Here goes nothing.】 Echo placed one hand on Sarah's forehead and one on Jaxon's. Light flared between them—cold blue from Echo's system, warm gold from Jaxon's, and something else, something deeper and darker, rising from inside Sarah. The twelfth system woke up. And Jaxon's world exploded into pain and light and the sound of a billion dying heartbeats, all speaking at once, all crying out for justice, for vengeance, for peace. He screamed. Sarah screamed. And somewhere in the cathedral, Lily stirred in her sleep, dreaming of a world where her father was more than human. "Now," he said. "We do it now." Jaxon looked at her—the woman he'd married, the woman he'd failed, who was about to trust him with the most dangerous thing in the world. Sarah stood up, her expression hardening into something unbreakable. "I've made my decision. This is my body, my system, my choice. Jaxon, when do we do this?" "Not all. Death Playback and Death Command are complementary—two aspects of the same concept. It could work. Maybe one in ten." "But it's not guaranteed," Jaxon said. "You said most people would shatter. Not all." 【Cheerful. Thanks for that image.】 "The host's mind fractures. Each identity controls a different system, and they're at war. The host becomes a battlefield." "What happens if they can't work together?" Sarah asked. Echo broke the silence. "The merging process creates a feedback loop. Two systems constantly trying to override each other, with the host's consciousness mediating. Think of two people shouting in your ear simultaneously." The room was quiet after Sarah finished speaking. The weight of what she was proposing—giving up the system she'd unknowingly carried, transferring it to Jaxon despite the risks—settled over everyone. "Do it," he said. Jaxon looked at Sarah—her face pale but determined, her eyes holding his with a steadiness that reminded him of why he'd fallen in love with her in the first place. She was terrified. But she wasn't running. 【Merging. Two systems bonded to one host. Immense power, immense strain. Your mind would have to hold both simultaneously. Most people would shatter.】 "What would sharing mean?" Jaxon asked. 【She's right. I've felt it too. Death Playback and Death Command—two halves of the same coin. We're connected in a way that other systems aren't.】 "They can be shared," Sarah insisted. "I've felt this thing inside me for years—I didn't know what it was, but I knew it was there. And I've felt it reaching toward Jaxon. Every time he visited Lily, it pulled toward him." "That's not how systems work," Echo said. "They can't be transferred." The room went quiet. Even the ambient hum of the cathedral's systems seemed to pause. "Yes, there is. You just don't want to say it." Sarah's jaw was set. "Someone else takes the system from me. Someone who can control it." Echo frowned. "There is no option three." Sarah, who'd been listening quietly, finally spoke. "What about option three?" "Permanent means either activating the twelfth system or transferring it. Both carry massive risks." Echo's voice was strained. "I'm not going to pretend this is simple. It's not. Every option could get Sarah killed." "And how long before your luck runs out? Before someone in Victoria's organization makes the connection? Before Carter decides to use Sarah as leverage against me?" Jaxon shook his head. "Hiding is a temporary solution. We need something permanent." "Hiding has worked so far," Echo countered. "Fifteen years without a single incident." "Option one is off the table," Jaxon said. "Hiding didn't work for Victoria's other targets, and it won't work for Sarah. Victoria's network is too extensive." Echo laid out the options with clinical precision, but Jaxon could see the cracks beneath the surface. She'd been carrying the secret of the twelfth system for fifty years—fifty years of protecting a woman she'd never met, of running from Victoria, of sacrificing her own freedom to keep Sarah safe. And now it was all falling apart.
