CHAPTER 4
ROMAN
"Roman!"
"What?" I groaned, yawning as I got up, looking around the room to see who it was that wouldn't let me sleep.
But the harsh sun rays instantly caught my eyes, blinding me for a moment and making me hiss, and squint. "Roman, can you hear me?"
That was the moment it struck me that the voice was coming from the mind link. It was clear as if he was standing right next to me.
"What do you want, Andrew?" I said, pushing myself back against the wall before realising with a start that I was naked, butt-naked.
Then I remembered the night before. I'd been with Athena. A smile left my lips as I reminisced it all- pounding her slick fuckhole from behind while watching through my drunken haze as her ass jiggled beneath me. Last night was something of a mystery itself, because I had no idea how I'd been able to work up the courage to talk to her, let alone how I felt the moment I set my eyes on her. I wanted to blame the alcohol, or maybe it was just how shapely she was but-
"Roman? Are you there? This is very serious."
"What the hell do you want, Andrew?" I groaned.
"You need to return to the Pack immediately. Your father has urgent news. This is too important and I advise you treat it as urgent. There has been a breach, Roman."
My brows scrunched up when he said that. "A breach? What did that mean?"
The command through the mindlink didn't leave any room for debate. Another groan left me as I dragged a hand through my hair and muttered to myself.
"Can't a guy get a peaceful morning?" I said to myself.
But I knew better. I had to treat it as urgent, just as he had requested. Pulling myself together, I slipped on my black shirts and combat boots as I wondered what kind of breach must have happened back at the Pack.
Taking my usual spot in the woods, I was already on my way home in less than an hour. It's been a month already since I last set foot in the Pack territory. It was important to keep my identity a secret, nobody had to find out.
My last visit had been in secret. And for some reason, as I approached the gates now, I was hit by a pang of nostalgia as I left home once again to serve a larger purpose, but it didn't wear off the traces of pleasure in my groin. Putting on my mask, I hurried along across the towering trees that flanked the main entrance.
While Crescent Moon Pack was hot and sunny, it was cool and moist here, the perfect place for relaxation. The scent of greenery and Pack life mingled, reminding me of my childhood days. In the distance, I spotted a group of young wolves sparring near the training ground. They weren't old enough to start training I guess, and it reminded me of my early days here.
Noah took me in after that monster, Jaxon, murdered my parents and my brother. I'd sworn an oath to make him die a painful death, but I had to work my way up the ranks and get close enough. A laugh from one of the children snapped me out of my thoughts about the past. For a moment it felt like nothing had really changed. As soon as I arrived at the imposing structure of the Packhouse, the guards let me in without a question.
And when I walked into the massive throne room with high ceilings and gargantuan pillars, my Foster father was already waiting. The walls of the room were lined with portraits of past Alphas and up there above his iron throne was the Pack's crest- a howling wolf encircled by flames. It was a powerful picture that filled me with fire anytime I saw it.
Beta Andrew appeared out of one of the corners, and walked up to me looking so grim. I knew something bad had happened. "Thank you for arriving so early despite the short notice. Something really bad happened yesterday. The Alpha will give you the rest of the details." He said.
I gave him a nod and followed him up the stairs where he was seated. As soon as we were up there, Beta Andrew turned and left, leaving me alone with him. There were no guards around, not a soul in sight apart from ours.
"Roman," he began. "I want to start off on a good note by congratulating you on your new position as Pack Vanguard. I trust you understand we are running out of time."
I nodded, bowing my head in respect subsequently.
"Yes. Thank you." I said, but the tension in the room told me this wasn't just a congratulatory meeting. "And back to the reason I called you back, son. We have a problem..."
He sucked in a deep breath. "Klaus has escaped."
Another moment's silence followed as my eyes widened in shock. I ripped off my mask. "What do you mean he h-has...? H-how?!" I asked, unable to keep the trepidation and anger out of my voice.
This was worse than I thought. My father's eyes darkened. It seemed he wasn't done yet. "That's not all, son. The Orb was stolen too. There was a breach. Someone let an outsider in."
The blood drained from my face as the news settled. It took a few minutes to assimilate what he'd just said. That Orb was a weapon of unimaginable power capable of bending nature itself to its wielder’s will. In the wrong hands, it could mean devastation for every single one of us. Not just our Pack, but every werewolf Pack. And Klaus had escaped with it.
"Who was behind this?!" I couldn't keep the agitation out of my voice anymore.
"We suspect it's Alpha Jaxon. He's always been the thorn in our side. And we found a crest of his Pack lying inside the oubliette where the Vampire was caged. The six men who were guarding the cell all lost their lives. Jaxon is onto something, and I have no idea what it is. But you have to figure out a way to kill him... before he kills us all."
