Chapter 18: A Darkness Rekindled

1048 Words
Lena’s mind raced as she stared at Dorian’s hand. The dark veins slithered beneath his skin like something alive, pulsing with an eerie, unnatural energy. He flexed his fingers, his expression tight with barely contained dread. "This isn't possible," she whispered, more to herself than to him. "We broke the curse." Dorian didn’t respond right away. He was too focused on the creeping corruption spreading along his arm. When he finally spoke, his voice was low, strained. "No… we only thought we did." Lena swallowed hard, trying to force her thoughts into order. Adrian’s words echoed in her mind—the book was never meant to break the curse… it was meant to awaken something far worse. A shiver ran down her spine. Dorian exhaled sharply and yanked his sleeve down over his wrist. "We need answers. Now." His voice held an edge of barely suppressed urgency. Lena nodded, pushing past the nausea roiling in her stomach. "The book." They both turned toward the study where The Book of the Moon still lay open on the floor, bloodstains marking the pages like an omen. Lena hesitated before stepping forward, the weight of what they’d done pressing on her chest. Dorian was already ahead of her. He crouched down, eyes scanning the ancient text. His fingers traced over the symbols, careful not to touch the dried blood. "What are we looking for?" Lena asked, kneeling beside him. "Anything we missed," he muttered. "There has to be something—" His words cut off abruptly. Lena looked up to see his expression darken, his jaw tightening. "What is it?" Dorian turned the book toward her. "This." Lena’s breath hitched. A new passage had appeared—one that hadn't been there before. The ink was fresh, the words jagged and hurried, as if written in a frenzy. You have only severed the chain. The beast still stirs. The bloodline remains the key. Her heart pounded. "This wasn’t here before," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Dorian’s fingers tightened around the edges of the book. "Which means someone—or something—wanted us to see it now." Lena’s pulse quickened as she read the words again. The bloodline remains the key. She looked up at Dorian. "What if breaking the curse only freed something worse?" Dorian didn’t answer. But the tension in his shoulders, the way his body coiled as if preparing for an unseen enemy, told her he was thinking the same thing. Then, the candlelight flickered violently, casting jagged shadows across the walls. A gust of wind howled through the house, rattling the windows and sending the pages of the book flipping wildly. Then came the whisper. Low. Sinister. You should not have interfered. Lena’s blood ran cold. Dorian shot to his feet, pulling her up with him. His eyes darted around the dimly lit room. "Who’s there?" The voice slithered through the air, disembodied, taunting. You thought you were free? You only opened the first door. Now, the true hunt begins. Then, the candles blew out all at once, plunging them into darkness. Lena’s heart pounded against her ribs. She reached for Dorian, feeling his steady presence beside her, but before she could say anything, a deep, guttural growl rumbled from the shadows. Something was here. A shape moved in the corner of the room, just beyond the reach of the moonlight filtering through the window. A hulking, inhuman silhouette—too tall, too twisted. Then, it lunged. Dorian shoved Lena aside just as a clawed hand swiped through the space where she had been standing. She hit the floor hard, gasping as the impact jarred her bones. "Dorian!" she cried, scrambling to her feet. Dorian had already engaged the creature, moving with a speed that sent chills down her spine. Even without his curse, his instincts remained honed, his body responding to danger like a predator. But this thing—whatever it was—was fast. Lena’s breath came in ragged gasps as she fumbled for something, anything, to use as a weapon. Her eyes locked onto the iron fire poker resting by the hearth. She lunged for it, gripping it tightly just as the beast let out an earsplitting snarl. The creature shoved Dorian back, sending him crashing into the bookshelf with bone-rattling force. "Dorian!" Lena’s grip tightened around the fire poker. The thing turned toward her. For the first time, she got a clear look at it. It wasn’t fully formed—its body flickered like a shadow caught between worlds. Its eyes burned an unnatural shade of silver, the same color as Adrian’s. Realization struck her like a lightning bolt. This thing… it came from him. The creature lunged. Lena barely had time to react. She swung the poker with everything she had, the metal colliding with the creature’s shoulder. A high-pitched shriek erupted from its throat as it stumbled back, its form flickering wildly. Dorian was up in an instant, his face a mask of fury. He grabbed the book from the floor, flipping through the pages until he found what he was looking for. "Lena!" His voice was sharp. "Say these words—now!" She didn’t hesitate. She gripped the poker tightly, eyes darting between Dorian and the creature as she began to read. The ancient words felt heavy in her mouth, their power thrumming through the air. The creature let out a guttural snarl, thrashing violently as the words wrapped around it like invisible chains. Its form flickered faster, its shape unraveling like mist in the wind. Then, with a final, haunting shriek, it vanished. Silence fell. Lena collapsed to her knees, chest heaving. Dorian stood rigid, the book still clutched in his hand. His jaw was tight, his gaze locked on the spot where the creature had been. Then, after a long moment, he exhaled. "It’s not over," he said, voice low. Lena looked up at him, her body still trembling. "I know." Dorian closed the book, his expression grim. "Adrian unleashed something. And whatever it is… it's just getting started." Lena swallowed hard. The realization settled over her like a weight. They had been so focused on breaking the curse that they hadn’t thought about what lay beneath it. And now, they were about to find out.
