Chapter Fifteen

Training The days following the challenge passed in a blur of blood, sweat, and moonlight—a relentless rhythm that pushed Elara beyond every limit she thought she had. Ronan refused to let the victory lull them into complacency. Kai had yielded publicly, accepting defeat with a grace no one expected, but his final words before disappearing into the shadows—I won't give up—hung over them like an approaching storm. The pack was fractured, divided down the middle: some revered Elara's emerging power with something close to worship, others feared it with instinctive terror. Whispers of the Moon-blessed omega spread like wildfire beyond Blood Moon territory, carried by traders and travelers. Rogues and rival packs would come sniffing soon enough, drawn by curiosity or greed or the desire to claim such power for themselves. They needed to be ready. So Ronan trained her with an intensity that bordered on obsession. Every dawn they rose before the sun painted the horizon, when the world was still gray and cold, and ran the forest trails in wolf form—miles and miles until her muscles screamed and her lungs burned. Building her stamina, teaching her to use her smaller size for speed and agility rather than viewing it as weakness. Her white wolf grew stronger daily, muscles hardening beneath sleek fur, senses sharpening until she could hear a deer's heartbeat from fifty yards away, could smell rain coming hours before the first drops fell. In human form, the training was more intimate—and more brutal. They sparred in the clearing behind the cabin from midday until dusk—hand-to-hand combat, grapples, strikes, defensive positions. Ronan was merciless but careful, pushing her to her limits without ever truly hurting her, always catching her before she fell too hard. "Again," he'd growl when she stumbled, his powerful hands catching her waist, his hard body pressed against hers for a breathless moment that made her forget they were training. Sweat-slick skin slid together. Breaths mingled hot in the cooling air. Eyes locked, dark with something that had nothing to do with combat. Every session ended the same way: sparring dissolving into desperate kisses, clothes torn off in frantic urgency, bodies coming together on the grass or against rough tree bark—raw, possessive, life-affirming. Claiming each other over and over, as if each time might be the last. But the real training—the one that truly changed her, that reshaped her understanding of herself—was with her power. It started small, almost accidental. One afternoon, after a particularly grueling sparring match that left them both bruised and gasping, Ronan had a deep gash across his forearm from catching himself on a broken branch. Blood welled dark and steady. Elara reached for him instinctively, palm pressing to the wound without thought. Silver light flared—brighter than ever before, almost blinding. The cut sealed in seconds, flesh knitting together, leaving only faint pink skin that would fade to nothing by morning. Ronan stared at his healed arm, then at her, awe burning bright in his silver eyes. "You're getting stronger. Much stronger." Elara pulled her hand back slowly, staring at the lingering glow on her fingers that pulsed in time with her heartbeat. "It's… growing. I can feel it inside me, like something waking up." That night, under a waxing moon that painted the world silver, Ronan guided her deeper into her power. They stood in the clearing, naked beneath the stars—vulnerable, connected, open to whatever might come. "Close your eyes," he murmured, standing behind her, large hands warm on her hips, his chest against her back. "Feel the moon. Don't just see it. Let it in. Let it become part of you." Elara breathed deep, centering herself. The moonlight felt like cool water pouring over her skin, sinking into her bones, filling empty spaces she hadn't known existed. Power stirred deep in her core—warm, vast, ancient beyond measure. She raised her hands toward the sky. Light exploded outward—a soft silver aura that lit the clearing like dawn breaking, transforming night into something otherworldly. Trees glowed as if lit from within. Every leaf shimmered. The air itself seemed to hum with energy. Ronan's breath caught audibly. "Beautiful," he whispered with reverence. "You're magnificent." The light pulsed with her heartbeat, responding to her emotions like a living thing. When she thought of Ronan—of his unwavering love, his fierce protection, the way he'd fought for her—the light grew warmer, brighter, almost golden at the edges. When she remembered Kai's rejection, the sharp pain of public humiliation, the lonely nights of exile—it sharpened, edged with something dangerous that crackled like lightning. Ronan stepped in front of her carefully, taking her glowing hands in his larger ones. "Control it," he said softly, silver eyes holding hers. "Don't let it control you. The power serves you, not the other way around." She focused on him—on their bond thrumming between them like a second heartbeat, on the love that anchored her—and the light steadied, wrapping around them both like a protective cocoon that shut out the rest of the world. They made love in that glow—slow, reverent, bodies moving in perfect synchronization as moonlight danced across sweat-slicked skin and her power wrapped them in warmth and safety. Afterward, lying tangled on the grass with his heartbeat steady beneath her ear, Elara traced the scar on Ronan's shoulder—her mark, her claim. "What am I becoming?" she whispered into the darkness, fear threading through wonder. Ronan kissed her forehead tenderly. "Something the world hasn't seen in centuries. Something that will change everything—for us, for the packs, for the old laws." Fear and excitement warred inside her chest, neither quite winning. The next day brought their first real test. A pack of rogues—five strong, battle-scarred and desperate—crossed into the borderlands at noon, drawn by rumors of the Moon-blessed omega and the riches her power might bring. Ronan scented them first, his body going rigid with alert tension. They fought back-to-back in the clearing—Ronan in wolf form, savage and unstoppable, all teeth and claws and primal fury; Elara shifting fluidly between human and wolf, silver light flaring from her hands to blind and burn when needed. One rogue—larger than the others, scarred and vicious—lunged for her exposed throat while she was mid-shift. Instinct took over completely. Silver light exploded outward in a devastating shockwave that threw all five attackers twenty feet through the air, slamming them into trees with bone-cracking force. They scrambled up, whimpering and bleeding, and fled into the forest without looking back. Ronan shifted back to human, staring at her with stunned pride shining in his eyes. "You just saved us both. That power—Elara, that was incredible." Elara looked at her hands, still glowing faintly, trembling with aftershock adrenaline. "I didn't even think. It just… happened. Like breathing." He pulled her close, wrapping her in his arms and his scent. "That's the power talking. Your instincts awakening. And it's only going to get stronger from here." That night, as they lay spent and tangled in their bed, moonlight streaming through the window, Ronan traced lazy circles on her stomach. "We need answers," he said quietly, voice serious in the darkness. "About what you are. About why the Goddess chose you now, after so long. About what you're meant to do with this power." Elara nodded against his chest. "There are old texts in the pack library. Forbidden ones, locked away. About white wolves. About the Moon-blessed. Things the elders don't want common wolves to know." Ronan's eyes darkened with determination. "Then we go get them." Elara's heart pounded, fear and resolve mixing. Sneaking into Blood Moon territory. Past warriors and sentries. Facing the possibility of seeing Kai again in his own domain. But she was no longer the rejected, powerless omega who'd been banished in shame. She was marked by a mate who loved her. Powerful beyond understanding. And ready to claim her destiny—whatever the cost, whatever the danger. As the moon rose higher outside their window, bathing everything in silver light, Elara felt it calling to her stronger than ever before—a pull in her blood, in her bones, in her very soul. The training was far from over. And the real challenges—the ones that would test not just her power but her heart, her loyalty, her very identity—were just beginning.
