The gun was cold. Still pressed against Elena’s forehead. Her lips trembled. Her eyes stared into Rico’s — begging, not for her life, but for the man he once was. But then— Crack! A gunshot tore through the forest. Elena screamed. The bullet whizzed past her ear, so close she felt the wind slice her skin. Her body flinched and hit the ground hard, face buried in the dirt. Another shot echoed—but this one didn’t come from Rico. Damian. He stood behind a tree, his face carved with fury, his gun smoking. Rico spun around, startled, but he was too slow.
