Soon, Carter and Calvin found themselves near Chelsea's home.
As he looked around, Carter's face twisted in disgust. This was the shantytown of Cloud City, and the conditions were appalling.
"Dad, it's this one," Calvin said, holding his nose and pointing to a low, shabby house nearby.
Honestly, he wouldn't be caught dead in a place like this if it weren't for the contract.
The Davis family was quite wealthy, but Old ladyship Davis kept a tight grip on the finances, and no one dared to touch them.
The sons working at Wealthy Estates could only earn salaries and dividends.
Uncle Charles was an utter loser, neither book-smart nor street-smart. He couldn't even hold a conversation with strangers without tripping over his words.
Old ladyship Davis would never let such a useless person work at the company and tarnish its image.
So, for years, Charles had survived on family allowances.
Even though Cloud City was a third-tier city, the cost of living was high, and rent was expensive. They could only afford to rent in this place that reeked to high heaven.
"Open up!"
Calvin knocked forcefully on the door.
"Who is it? Knocking so hard, you're about to break the door," came Quinn's voice from inside.
As she opened the door and saw who it was, her expression immediately soured.
"Why is it you?"
"We're here to see Chelsea."
With that, Carter pushed the door open and walked in.
"Where's Chelsea?"
Quinn, her face cold, asked, "What do you want with her?"
"Chelsea!"
Carter ignored Quinn and shouted into the house, "Your uncle is here to see you. Where are you?"
Inside, Chelsea was startled by the shouting.
She remembered Carter once saying he was a man of high status, destined to die in the soil of the rich.
Why would he lower himself to come to the slums?
"Let's go out and see," Sean said, pulling Chelsea along as they headed out.
Seeing Chelsea come out, Carter's face immediately broke into a smile. "Chelsea, are you still mad at your brother?"
Chelsea didn't say a word, looking at him with a calm expression.
"Calvin, hurry up and apologize to your sister!"
Calvin, looking displeased, said, "Dad, why are you beating around the bush with her?"
"Chelsea, we're here for a simple reason today. We want you to sign that contract with Mr. Johnson. If you behave, maybe I'll be in a good mood and ask Grandma to let you return to the company. It's not impossible!"
Hearing this, Chelsea trembled with anger.
They had fired her without a second thought, and now that they needed her, they came looking for her with their noses in the air.
Acting all high and mighty.
Did they really think she'd starve without the Davis family?
Quinn, standing to the side, finally understood.
So, it was Calvin who had orchestrated her daughter's dismissal!
She was already furious, and Calvin's attitude only fueled her anger.
"Calvin, what do you mean by this? What do you take Chelsea for? What do you think we are? Do you think we're beggars?"
"Aunt, give me a break. If it weren't for Grandma's pity, your family would have starved long ago! Calling you beggars isn't an insult."
Calvin sneered, "Right now, Chelsea is the only one with any use. Otherwise, why would I step into this dump where poor people live?"
"What did you just say?"
Quinn's face turned red with rage as she raised her hand, ready to slap Calvin.
"How dare you!"
Carter shouted angrily, pointing a finger at her nose, "You witch! My son is the future heir of the Davis family. Calling you names is a compliment, so don't act ungrateful."
Quinn was so furious she nearly saw stars.
Smack! The sound of a slap echoed through the room.
Calvin clutched his cheek, staring in disbelief at Sean.
"What are you staring at? Consider that slap a compliment. I wouldn't bother with most people, so don't be ungrateful," Sean said coolly.
"You!"
Calvin was seething with anger but didn't dare retaliate.
His hand had almost been broken by Sean before, and it was still numb.
This guy might be a deserter, but he packed a punch.
If he went crazy, Calvin would be the one to suffer.
Carter's face darkened. This deserter he brought dared to hit Calvin right in front of him, showing him no respect at all.
"Do you have a death wish?"
Carter squinted, his gaze filled with malice.
But when he locked eyes with Sean, he felt as if he was staring into an abyss.
His gaze was deep, icy, ruthless, bloodthirsty, and full of contempt.
He shivered, feeling as if he had fallen into an ice cellar.
How could a person's eyes be so terrifying?
"I'm doing just fine, why would I want to die?"
Sean squinted back, "Or maybe you're the one who's tired of living!"
His icy words carried no emotion, and despite the summer heat, Carter felt a chill in his heart.
Forget it, he thought, better not to bother with this deserter now. The priority was to deal with Chelsea.
Once that contract was signed, he'd have all the time in the world to settle the score.
With that thought, Carter changed his expression, smiling as he said, "Chelsea, your uncle was just too anxious earlier, so his tone was harsh. Don't take it to heart."
"This time, Mr. Johnson specifically named you to handle the contract. Come back, don't be stubborn. You know how much the family has invested in this contract. You wouldn't want to see your grandmother worry, right?"
His face was all smiles, but none of it reached his eyes.
Hearing this, Chelsea hesitated, caught between anger and uncertainty.
Quinn's face was a storm of conflicting emotions. She never imagined Carter would personally come to ask Chelsea to return. It was truly unexpected.
Just as Chelsea was wavering, Sean said calmly, "If you need a favor, just ask. Is that supposed to be a threat?"
Upon hearing this, Carter's face instantly darkened. He had never been so humble in his life, let alone to someone younger like Chelsea.
Being contradicted again and again, he was both embarrassed and angry.
"Do you really think we can't sign this contract without Chelsea?"
"If you're so confident, why are you here looking for Chelsea?"
Sean said with a calm expression.
Quinn and Chelsea were both stunned.
Could this really be their new son-in-law, the so-called deserter?
"Chelsea, don't be ungrateful. This chance won't come knocking twice!" Calvin said angrily.
Looking at Calvin's swollen cheek, Chelsea stifled a laugh and said, "No need. Mr. Johnson might just sign the contract because of your 'big presence'!"
Calvin's face turned crimson with rage, his anger bubbling over at being mocked by a mere girl.
"You three are just perfect!"
Carter shot a cold glance at Sean and the others, then shouted towards the closed master bedroom, "Charles, I'll remember this day!"
With that, he stormed off with Calvin in tow, both of them seething.
Once they were gone, Charles cautiously cracked the door open and peeked out, asking, "Did they leave?"
Quinn shot him a glare that could pierce steel, wondering what she had done to deserve such a spineless husband.
"Why didn't you come out when they were here? Do you want to see us bullied to death?"
Charles looked a bit embarrassed, scratching his head, "Now that big brother is angry, should we grovel and beg for forgiveness?"
Quinn felt her blood pressure spike at his suggestion.
"Dad, things have come to this, there's nothing more to say. Besides, we did nothing wrong, why should we apologize!"
Chelsea looked at the two of them and said, "Dad, Mom, don't worry. Even if we leave the Davis family, I'll still take care of us!"
Quinn looked at her daughter, her heart aching. Such frail shoulders, yet bearing the weight of the family. It was truly a heavy burden for her.
"And me too."
At this moment, Sean spoke up, "I'll stand by Chelsea's side to support you both."
