He spoke with an air of calm, but inside, his mind was a whirlwind of curses.
Once that contract is inked, I'll crush them!
“Where’s your dad?”
Chelsea was still on the fence about agreeing, so Sean asked for her, “Isn’t he here?”
“My dad had an urgent matter, so he sent me to apologize to Chelsea and hopes my brother-in-law will let it slide. After all, we’re family, and grudges don’t last overnight.”
Calvin was seething with humiliation, even apologizing to this live-in son-in-law.
But for the sake of the Davis family heir position, he endured it.
“You should go back.”
Sean shook his head, saying, “This isn't your call. Have your dad come and personally invite Chelsea back.”
Calvin's anger flared. This was crossing the line.
He had already apologized, what more did they want?
“You... you can rest assured, I can make the call on this.” Calvin bit back his anger, his voice barely a whisper.
Chelsea glanced at Sean, a flicker of worry danced across her face.
Calvin had come to apologize; maybe she should just go back with him.
If they offended the father and son, what would they do if the family subsidies were cut off?
“I said, have your dad come. Didn’t you hear me?”
Sean put down his chopsticks and said coldly, “You're not fit to ask Chelsea out. Your dad has to come.”
His voice wasn’t loud, but to Calvin, it hit like a thunderclap—BOOM!
It sent shivers down his spine.
“Sean, you’re going too far.” Calvin couldn’t hold back, glaring at Sean.
Too far?
Sean let out a cold laugh, standing up, a fierce glint flashing in his eyes.
Those cold, indifferent eyes met Calvin’s, scaring him out of his wits.
“Don’t make me say it a third time!”
“You...”
Calvin's tongue itched to hurl insults, but fearing Sean might act again, he swallowed his words, shot him a fierce look, and slunk away.
Quinn and Chelsea exchanged worried glances.
“Was that too much?”
With Calvin’s vengeful nature, this wouldn’t be the end of it.
They knew all too well what Carter and his son were like.
If they really angered them, and they retaliated, Old ladyship Davis wouldn’t help them.
“Don’t worry.”
Sean said calmly, “Right now, they need us, not the other way around. They can’t stir up any trouble.”
Easy for you to say, but what if they retaliate?
Quinn's nerves were a tangled mess. This live-in son-in-law was nothing but a troublemaker, with no skills, only causing offense.
“Mom, don’t worry. If they retaliate, I’ll take full responsibility.”
Sean's smile was a promise of retribution. If they came to apologize sincerely, that would be fine. But if they dared to play any tricks, he’d make sure they regretted ever being born.
Charles was paralyzed with fear, listening to the conversation outside.
To bolster his courage, he turned up the TV volume. Only then did he feel a bit of security.
“Uncle, you don’t understand them.”
Chelsea let out a weary sigh.
Her uncle had always looked down on their family.
Admitting fault to them?
How could that be possible!
“I don’t want to understand them. I... just want to know you better!”
Sean's eyes were clear and fixed on her, sending Chelsea into a flustered panic.
"U-Uncle... you..."
"Trust me, kiddo, I'll keep you safe and make sure nothing ever harms you!"
That night, Chelsea couldn't stop tossing and turning, sleep eluding her.
Moonlight poured in, and instinctively, she glanced down, locking eyes with a pair of bright eyes.
"Uncle, why are you still awake?" Chelsea asked, a shy tone in her voice.
"You're not asleep either, are you?"
With those words, silence wrapped around the room.
"Don't let what my mom said get to you. She's all bark and no bite."
"I know," Sean chuckled, "Mom's right. I can't just mooch around. Once you're back at the company, I'll start job hunting."
"Return to the company?"
Chelsea let out a bitter laugh, "I doubt I can go back. You don't know my uncle and cousin's temper."
Tap, tap, tap!
As soon as she finished speaking, there was a knock on the door, echoing clearly in the quiet night.
In the next room, Charles was so terrified he dove under the covers.
Quinn froze, her eyes wide with panic.
They're here!
Carter and his son are here to settle the score!
We're doomed!
Chelsea, still on the bed, felt her anxiety spike. She walked to the living room, turned on the light, but hesitated to open the door.
Creeeak.
Quinn opened the bedroom door, her voice anxious, "Who could it be at this hour?"
"Mom, just open the door and see,"
Before Quinn could stop him, Sean swung the door open.
Who else could it be but Carter and his son!
Carter's smile froze when he saw Sean open the door.
But he forced a smile, "Oh, it's Sean. Is Chelsea asleep? I've come to personally invite her back to work."
Chelsea stood there, stunned.
Quinn was also taken aback.
Did Carter really come?
Sean gave him a half-smile and stepped aside.
"Thank you!"
Carter quickly thanked him and entered with Calvin, immediately spotting Chelsea, who looked slightly dazed.
"Chelsea, I meant to come earlier, but something came up last minute. Don't be mad," Carter said, pointing at Calvin, "It's all Calvin's fault. I gave him a good scolding on the way here. As your big brother, not only did he fail to protect you, but he also got you fired by grandma. It's disgraceful."
As he spoke, he conveniently shifted all the blame onto Old ladyship Davis.
"I'm sorry, Chelsea. It's all my fault as your big brother."
Calvin added, "But the company's not at fault. Please don't let my mistake drag down everyone else there."
"Come back, I'll be waiting at the company entrance tomorrow to explain everything in front of everyone. Please give your uncle another chance."
With that, Carter bowed, and Calvin hurriedly followed suit.
The father and son were the picture of sincerity.
Watching this, Chelsea felt at a loss, unsure where to place her hands.
What was she supposed to do?
She instinctively glanced at Sean. Seeing him nod, she knew what to say.
"Uncle, I agree to come back."
"Good."
Carter's face lit up with a smile as he said, "I'll be waiting for you at the entrance of Fuhua Group at nine o'clock tomorrow morning." With that, Carter and his son left.
At that moment, Chelsea felt as if she were dreaming. Her uncle had actually shown up in person to ask her to come back to work. It was... simply unbelievable.
"Did Uncle really come to ask Chelsea?" Charles, opening the door, asked in disbelief.
"He did!" Quinn exclaimed, her excitement unmistakable. After all these years, she finally felt a sense of vindication. Hearing Carter humbly plead with Chelsea made her want to shout for joy. "That jerk finally has to come crawling to us."
Seeing her parents' faces light up with excitement, Chelsea felt a whirlwind of emotions. She had always known how much her parents had suffered under her uncle's oppression and bullying. Today, they finally got a moment to breathe easy, even if just for a fleeting second.
Meanwhile, Calvin followed behind Carter, not daring to utter a word. He could feel his father's simmering rage, terrified that a single wrong word might land him in the crossfire. Carter's pride had taken a massive hit today, and the bitterest pill to swallow was that it was all because of the son-in-law he himself had brought into the family.
"Now, inform all employees to gather at the company entrance two hours early to welcome Chelsea!" Carter's eyes were dark and menacing, like a snake coiled in the shadows. "And start spreading rumors that Chelsea is involved in something inappropriate with Zachary..."
