THE WEIGHT OF ALMOST

Morning sunlight filtered through the glass-panelled windows of the studio, casting golden rectangles on the hardwood floor. Amani stood by the kitchenette; her hand wrapped around a warm mug she hadn’t taken a single sip from. Her eyes flicked to the glass door that led to the recording booth. Empty. He wasn’t in yet. Her heart was still recovering from the night before—from the tension, the closeness, the near-admission that had hung between them like a held breath. Her chest ached from how hard she had worked to ignore the unspoken words and the way Minjae had looked at her like he wanted to say something he’d never said to anyone. She hadn't slept. Not really. She had stared at the ceiling, berating herself for stepping that close. For the way, her voice had softened when she said," You haven’t seen half of me. It felt like a confession, even if the words weren't directly about him. Now, in the sterile clarity of daylight, everything felt raw and exposed. The door creaked open behind her, and instinctively, she turned—her breath catching for a second too long. Minjae. His hair was slightly tousled, as if he too hadn’t managed much rest. He wore a black oversized hoodie, the hood thrown up like he wanted to shield himself from the world—or maybe just from her eyes. Their gazes collided. Neither of them smiled. Amani dropped her gaze first, staring at her untouched coffee. “Morning,” she said, her voice tight, casual in the way people pretend nothing happened. Minjae cleared his throat, nodded once, and walked past her. “Morning.” Nothing else. But the silence that followed was louder than anything they could have said. It trailed behind him as he disappeared into the studio, slinging his guitar over his shoulder without a glance back. Amani closed her eyes. Okay, this is fine. This is normal. But it wasn’t normal. Every time she passed him in the hallway, their eyes locked for a fraction too long. Every time he was speaking to someone, she felt his gaze flick toward her, like he couldn’t help it. And she couldn’t help it either. Later that day, during a meeting with PR and Management, Amani sat at the far end of the long table. Minjae sat across from her, two seats down. His posture was casual, but she could feel the tension in his shoulders. She was doing her best to keep notes and look engaged, but her mind wandered—again—to last night. Across the table, Minjae tilted his head toward her as another exec rambled about schedules and livestream logistics. She looked up at the same time. Their eyes met. Just for a second. But it was enough. His lips pressed together, and he looked away quickly. Amani blinked rapidly and returned to scribbling words that had no real meaning. “... And we’ll do a livestream at 7 PM to re-engage the core fanbase.” It was a throwaway line. Until the fanbase gave them something unexpected. ________________________________________ Trending: Minjae’s Mystery Lover? The headlines hit the internet like a storm. Someone had snapped a blurry shot of Amani and Minjae leaving the studio some nights before. Too close. Too late. Too... suspicious. Hashtags exploded. #MinjaeLoveScandal #WhoIsShe #MysteryWoman The photo wasn’t even that damning—Amani had her coat drawn tight, and Minjae wore a cap pulled low. But it was late at night, and they were clearly alone. That was enough fuel. The company group chat blew up. Staff started whispering. Interns giggled and avoided eye contact when she walked by. No one said it to her face, but she felt the shift. She felt the buzz. Minjae hadn’t said a word about it all morning. He didn’t have to. His silence spoke volumes. Until the livestream. ________________________________________ 7:12 PM – Live with Minjae The chat comments flew so fast they were impossible to read. Hearts. Question marks. Fire emojis. A deluge of fans asking about “the girl.” Minjae was halfway through answering a question about his songwriting process when one bold viewer dropped it: “Is that your new girlfriend? She’s so pretty. <3” The silence was palpable. Even the host froze. Minjae looked directly at the camera. Amani, who was off-screen but seated close enough to hear, went still. Her breath was held in her throat. Then he spoke, calm and sure. “She’s not my girlfriend,” Minjae said. “She’s here to help me—and she’s good at her job. The best, actually.” That was all. But it was everything. He never commented on the rumours. Never corrected speculations. His whole brand was “mysterious and detached.” But here he was, defending her. Publicly. The host blinked, trying to redirect. “Well, that’s... that’s great. "Teamwork makes the dream work, right?” Minjae smiled politely, but his eyes flicked sideways—to where Amani stood, just out of frame. Amani’s heart beat hard in her chest. You didn’t have to do that, she thought. But maybe he wanted to. Later That Night – Penthouse “Okay, you have no idea how wild that livestream was,” their stylist, Mi Rae, giggled as she handed Amani a mic for their karaoke night. It had been a long week of rehearsals, press, tension—and for once, Minjae had said, “Let’s unwind.” Unwind, in this case, meant renting out a private penthouse lounge with a ridiculous karaoke setup, enough snacks to feed a small nation, and just the inner circle. Amani hadn’t wanted to go. She told herself it would be awkward. That she had work. But when Minjae looked at her and said, “You deserve a break,” she couldn’t say no. Mi Rae shoved the mic into her hand again. “Come on! You’re first.” Amani raised a brow. “Me?” “You owe us after that viral mystery lover moment. This is your punishment.” Everyone laughed. Minjae chuckled too—low and real. Amani rolled her eyes and stepped up. “Fine. But if I sing, you sing.” Minjae leaned back onto the couch, crossing his arms. “Deal.” The track started. Some cheesy pop ballad she barely remembered. But as she sang, her nerves eased. She loosened up, laughed. When the chorus hit, she pointed the mic at Minjae, daring him to join in. He did. Horribly. Off-key. Dramatic. Everyone was screaming with laughter. And just like that, something cracked open between them—a layer peeled off. Their eyes met as they sang nonsense onto the mic, voices colliding in messy, ridiculous harmony. And for that moment, they weren’t assistants or artists. They were just two people—existing in a bubble of music and laughter and freedom. When the song ended, they were breathless, standing too close again. But no one noticed. Or maybe no one cared. Near Midnight Amani stepped onto the balcony with a drink in hand. The city stretched below in lights and blurred shapes. She heard him before she saw him. “Careful. You’re starting to like it here.” She turned. Minjae stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets. “Don’t flatter yourself,” she replied, smirking. He stepped closer, leaning on the railing beside her. “I meant Korea. Not... me.” A beat passed between them. “Right,” she said. But she didn’t correct him. He looked out at the skyline. “Earlier. On the livestream. I didn’t mean to make things awkward.” “You didn’t,” she said softly. “You just... surprised me.” He nodded. They stood in silence. Close, but not touching. Both knowing there was more to say. Before either of them could, the door opened behind them. A loud voice broke the quiet: “Minjae!”
