Shattered Illusions

Seraphina’s POV “Are you hurt?” Damon’s voice broke through the darkness, piercing and urgent. His powerful hands gripped my arms as he crouched in front of me, his body rigid and ready to defend. “I’m fine,” I responded, my voice quivering despite my attempt to sound cool. “But what the hell is going on, Damon? This isn’t normal.” He didn’t answer immediately. His jaw clenched as he examined the room, his figure illuminated by the dim glow of the city lights seeping through the shattered glass. “This is a message,” he added finally, his tone harsher than I’d ever heard it. “Elaine is escalating.” “A message?” I repeated, shocked. “You think this is what she's doing? What type of business rivals go into someone’s home and damage their windows?” Damon stood, bringing me to my feet as he rushed swiftly for the security panel on the wall. “Elaine doesn’t play by the rules, Seraphina. She’s been waiting for the proper opportunity to strike, and now that you’re in the picture, she perceives you as a threat.” “A threat?” I scoffed, following him. “I’m not the billionaire mogul trying to close a merger. I’m merely the woman you lured into your foolish idea. Why would she care about me?” Damon turned to face me, his countenance opaque. “Because you’re more than just a pawn, whether you want to admit it or not. You’re my wife now—on paper or otherwise—and that makes you a target.” His words sent a chill down my spine, but I refused to allow fear take hold. “You didn’t answer my question,” I remarked, crossing my arms. “Why would she go to these lengths? What’s actually going on between you two?” “Elaine has always been ambitious,” Damon observed, his tone harsh. “She wants power, control, and anyone who stands in her way becomes collateral damage. She’s been circling me for years, attempting to get her hooks into my company—and into me.” I paused, the ramifications of his words sinking in. “Into you?” I repeated, my stomach twisted. “It’s not what you think,” he added hurriedly, his eyes softening as he drew closer. “She wanted a partnership, both professionally and personally. I rejected her. She didn’t take it well.” “You’re telling me this woman has been obsessing over you for years, and you didn’t think to warn me?” I demanded, my voice rising. “You knew she would come after me, Damon, and you still dragged me into this mess.” “I didn’t think she’d go this far,” he said, his voice tinged with frustration. “I thought I could handle her, keep her at bay. But she sees you as a vulnerability, Seraphina. And she’s not going to stop until she’s torn us apart.” I laughed harshly, shaking my head. “Torn us apart? There is no us, Damon. This is a business deal, remember? You made that extremely clear.” His eyes clouded, and for a second, I thought he may dispute. But instead, he let out a long sigh, raking a hand through his hair. “This isn’t just about business anymore,” he remarked gently. “Whether you want to admit it or not, you’re in this now. And that means I have to defend you.” “I don’t need your protection,” I shot back, my voice quivering with wrath. “What I need is the truth. No more half-answers, no more secrets. If you want me to stay in this, you need to start being honest with me.” His jaw tightened, and I could see the conflict he was waging within himself. Finally, he nodded, his shoulders sagging slightly. “Fine,” he said. “You want the truth? Here it is.” He drew closer, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart accelerate. “Elaine knows things about me—about my family—that could destroy everything I’ve built. If she gets her hands on that knowledge, it’s over. Not just for myself, but for you too.” “What kind of information?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Things I’ve done,” he replied, his tone laden with regret. “Deals I’ve made to protect my company, to secure my future. Not all of them were… clean.” My breath caught, and for a moment, I couldn’t speak. “You’re telling me you’ve broken the law?” I finally managed. “It’s not that simple,” he answered hastily. “I did what I had to do to survive in this world. But Elaine doesn’t care about the background. She’ll twist it however she needs to in order to harm me.” I took a step back, my head racing as I tried to grasp his words. “You should have told me this sooner,” I replied, my voice trembling. “You should have given me the chance to walk away before it got this far.” “I couldn’t,” he answered, his voice steely. “Because I need you, Seraphina. Not just for the merger, but for this war. You’re the only one who can stand by my side and help me take her down.” I shook my head, the weight of his words trying to crush me. “This isn’t what I signed up for, Damon,” I whispered, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. “I didn’t agree to be a part of some twisted power struggle.” “I know,” he responded, his voice softening. “And I’m sorry for dragging you into this. But I assure you, Seraphina, I’ll do everything it takes to keep you safe.” His remarks were honest, but they did little to alleviate the storm roaring inside me. “And what if you can’t?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “What if Elaine wins?” “She won’t,” he answered firmly, his eyes flashing with determination. “Because I won’t let her. Not now, not ever.” Before I could react, the sound of footsteps echoed through the penthouse, followed by a low, foreign voice. “Bold words, St. Clair. Let’s see if you can back them up.” Both Damon and I turned toward the source of the voice, our hearts beating as a figure emerged from the shadows. It was a man I didn’t recognize, but the cold, calculating look in his eyes sent a chill down my spine. “Who the hell are you?” Damon demanded, stepping protectively in front of me. The man smirked, grabbing a revolver from inside his jacket. “Let’s just say I’m here on behalf of someone who has a vested interest in seeing you… fail.” Elaine. The name resonated in my thoughts like a funeral knell. “Step aside, Damon,” the man murmured, his voice calm but tinged with danger. “This doesn’t have to get messy.” “Over my dead body,” Damon muttered, his tone murderous. The man chuckled, his finger tightening on the trigger. “That can be arranged.” My pulse hammered as I grasped Damon’s arm, my mind whirling with fear and determination. I had no idea how we were going to get out of this, but one thing was certain: our lives would never be the same.
